At the end of class, Mr. Saunders never returned William’s work. He hadn’t looked up. Only down at what he was doing, assuring the class that they had missed an opportunity today for work giving them only nine more days in class to work on their papers. Students groaned and kissed up to him for more time, but the casual care he had originally given them was gone, layering only more stress upon William himself.  Instead of dwelling on it, William had led Malorie out then headed with her to Home Economics.
