16 Job-Hunting Blues April fought for breath, her throat closing in fear, too tight for her to pull air through. The weight on her chest had forced it all out of her and her lungs were empty, empty and aching. She tried again, tried to push the weight off her, tried to draw in air, but all she managed was to twitch her fingers and gasp mutely. “April!” Her eyes snapped open at the sound of her name and just like that the weight was gone. She sat up, slumping forward over her knees as she hauled in lungful after lungful of air in great sobs. “The nightmare?” Lars asked. April looked up at him standing in the doorway of their narrow rented room. She nodded, then dropped her head down again, pressing her forehead to her bent knees and focusing on slowing her breath.
