Avalon's POV:
"I can't let another New Year come and pass, and you still wear the same old thing, it's ridiculous", Avery, my identical twin, states as she goes through my closet.
"It's just school", I sigh coming into the room from my morning run.
"Just school?" She gasped,"you're popular since you became the captain of the soccer team for some reason."
"I can dress how I like, I already plan to wear my team jacket today", I shrug.
"You mean this ugly jacket?" She picks up the red and white Letterman jacket with my number on it.
"It's not ugly, when I wear this I represent the entire school", I snatch the jacket from her hand.
"Whatever, dad said not to skip breakfast this time", she says,"this. This will do for now, you can keep the stupid jacket". She places a pair of skinny jeans and a V-neck top on my bed.
Where did she find that top?
Avery and I both look alike with honey blonde hair and dark blue eyes. We take it from our mother who is always away at work. We barely see her.
"You got the good genes. I don't know why you don't show it off, Ava", she sighs,"I would kill to have a body like yours."
"Take it then because I can deal with all this size", I gesture at my chest.
"I don't know how you manage it for soccer, but that's skills."
"Girls, we leave in forty-five minutes, and you still have breakfast to eat", dad calls.
"See you downstairs in a bit, this takes time to prepare", Avery gestures to her face and leaves.
I look at the V-neck top I didn't know I had, I throw it back in the closet and take out a simple white T-shirt and a pair of joggers to go with my jacket. Much better.
"Why Ava, why?" Avery sighs when I enter the kitchen.
"What? I am comfortable in this", I shrug.
"Dad, please tell Ava that it's the first day of school and a new year and that it's time for a change", she turns to our father who is reading the newspaper. He had black hair and gray eyes, he was a lawyer in one of the big firms in all of Sydney.
"Avery leave your sister be. If she wants to dress like a guy, then let her and when she finally likes someone she'll come asking for your help", dad grins.
Avery laughs, and I glare at them, they like to pick on me.
"I wouldn't like anyone and I got over a year before I finished high school, so I think I can manage", I retort.
"We'll see, let's eat, our friends will be picking us up shortly", Avery informs me.
"You mean your friends, I only have one."
"We have known Nabila and Mackenzie for years, Ava", she points out.
"Well they don't like me for some reason, especially Mackenzie, so I will avoid her as much as possible. I'll take my bike."
She sighs,"I'm sure Mackenzie is over that rumor about you sleeping with her ex-boyfriend."
"I don't think she is. When she sees me she glares at me and that rumor started in September", I explain.
"Exactly so she can be over it now."
I shake my head.
The rumors started because of how close Jesse Ford and I got last September. We are close friends and because of that people thought we hooked up.
"I'm still riding my bike," I state.
"How about I drop you off?" Dad suggests.
"Dad, I think it's time I got a car of my own, don't you think?" Avery bats her eyelashes at him.
"Avery, we have been over this, your mother and I a-"
"Agree that we won't get one until we're 18, it was worth the try", she sighs.
We finish eat just as someone knocks on the door.
"They're here, bye dad", Avery gets up and kisses dad on the cheek before picking up her bag,"I hope mom comes home later."
She leaves.
"Ready to go kiddo? It's 7:45 and class starts at 8:10", dad says.
"Yeah, let me just get my bags", I leave and go upstairs to my room.
Later we have soccer tryouts. That should be fun.
****
"Bye, see you tonight", I get out of the car.
"West, good to see you", Jesse approaches me and we made a handshake.
"How was your winter break?" I ask.
We are both wearing school jackets.
"Good, I can't wait to see what this season brings", he grins.
"Me too, we're so winning the championship", I nod.
Someone bumps into me from behind, and I turn around,"watch where you're go-", I look up and stop.
This dude was 6 feet 3 or something with black hair, caramel brown eyes and olive skin.
"Move out the way girly", I hear the French accent in his voice.
"Excuse me? Who are you calling girly?" I glare up at him.
"You sweet cheeks, do you want my number?" He smirks.
I roll my eyes,"do I look like a dismal in distress?"
He opens his mouth.
"Don't answer that, I have got no time for this", I turn around and paced away from him, pulling Jesse with me.
The nerve of him, thinking he could flirt with me.
"I heard there's a new student, a foreigner from France", Bailey, my best friend says as I get to my locker.
"I may have heard", I open my locker.
"He also plays soccer", she adds.
"What?"
"Yes, I overheard it from Nabila and I think Mackenzie is going to mark her territory soon", she whispers.
"Not if my sister does it first", I look down the hallway where my twin sister is giving the 'new' guy a tour. A few girls glare at her, but I am not surprised; she is the president of the welcoming committee and captain of the cheer squad with Mackenzie as vice captain.
Avery dresses the opposite to me. Today she has on high-waist denim jeans, ankle boots and a crop top, her hair down with light makeup on.
"This is the chemistry lab", I hear her say to the guy, pointing to the door that isn't far from my locker.
"Do you have a sister by any chance? I saw someone exactly like you in the parking lot, unless you changed your clothes and personality."
Avery laughs,"you mean Avalon, she's my twin."
"I do love twins", he smiles and Avery blushes.
Doesn't she have a boyfriend?
"Baby!" I heard Donovan Ryder yell as he entered the school with his wing man, Felix Alston, at his side.
Donovan Ryder is Avery's boyfriend. They got together last summer.
She runs to him and they kiss.
"Who's this?" Ryder holds her close to his side. The new guy and he are basically the same height.
"This is Bryce King, he-"
"No way, the Bryce King, dude you're a legend", Ryder states,"are you joining the soccer team?"
That's Bryce King? I heard about him, but I never in a million years knew he would come all the way to Australia.
"Well that's the plan", Bryce nods.
"Great, what's your first class? We can hang out for lunch", Ryder asks.
"AP Biology."
"Great, we're going in that direction too. Let's go."
Mackenzie and Nabila join the group, and they all walk down the hallway.
"Well that was fast", I comment.
"He's so hot", Bailey swoons,"he'll be sitting at our table for sure."
The first bell rings,"well I'm off to class, didn't he say he had AP biology? OMG, he's in my class!" She shrieks and runs down the hallway.
"Looks like you got some competition this semester West", Luciano Ricci says to me, his lockers are on the opposite side.
"Whatever, I am captain."
"Not for long. That King guy is excellent", he shuts his locker.
"Whatever, see you on the field later."
__________
"Bryce is so awesome and smart as well", Bailey swoons as we enter the cafeteria.
Bryce was in my French class that had just finished. He is sitting right in front of me. I don't know why he is even in the class. French is his first language.
"Can you stop swooning for once? Don't you have a crush on Luc-"
"Keep it down", she covers my mouth,"don't spill the beans."
"I was just asking."
We got in line, collected our lunches, then take out seats at the table. Jesse and Luciano join us.
"Afternoon ladies", Luciano winks and Bailey blushes, she is pretty with chestnut hair and blue-gray eyes.
"Leave the flirting to girls who are actually interested in you", I reply.
"You're saying you don't want a piece of this?" He gestures to himself, he is Italian with black hair and green eyes.
"That's exactly what I am saying", I unwrap my sandwich as my sister, her two friends, her boyfriend, his wingman and Bryce come to the table.
"Avalon West, I see the new year didn't change you", Donovan states.
"Could say the same thing for you. Aren't you trying to grow a beard?" I say sweetly at him, and he glares at me.
"So you're the captain? I'm surprised", Bryce states.
"Why? Doesn't it have girls on your team back home?"
"No, you see tomboys are rare in the country", he shrugs. Bailey covers her laugh with a choke.
"Well they're quite popular here", I state.
"Just not in this school", Luciano adds, and they all laugh.
I need a new social group.
"Well, tryouts are after school. Maybe you can show us some real skills", Felix tells Bryce.
"Excuse me?" I look at him.
"No offense West, but if we are to win the championship we need to buck up on our game plan starting with a change", he answers.
He is right, but I wouldn't let King take my captain position just like that.
"What better change than Bryce King? Have you seen him play?" Mackenzie smiles.
"Maybe once or twice", I lie.
"Then you know he is good", Jesse adds.
Whose side is he on?
"I'll be the judge of that later at tryouts."
"Don't worry darling, I'll leave you speechless", Bryce smirks.
"I'd like to see you try King."
"It's on."
