The First Night

"Mom... oh, mom." I thought as the tears came streaming down my face. I wanted so bad to rush over and hold her but she was close to the bottom and I didn't have the strength. As I slowly started to crumble, Damon came back. He had our packs and a somber look on his face. Without saying a word, he got out the meds and some fresh bandages. I sat and stared at the pile of bodies, numb to the core. He was right though, about her looking funny. She looked like a sickly, mummified, zombie. That peaked my interest. "Damon, look. The bodies all look the same. Mummified zombies." I pointed in the direction of my claim. His eyes quickly moved in that direction but neither of us could answer it. We glanced at each other with the same expression - bewilderment. He put the finishing touches on my new bandage and declared me fit to walk, wit assistance of course. "We need gloves so we can collect samples. Who knows if this will be a determining factor in what's going on." He knew what I was saying and without question he handed me a pair of latex gloves and some small vials for the samples. I noticed that the bodies still had some fluid so I gathered some on a Q-tip and stuck it in the vial. I wanted to take pictures but I knew I had to conserve my battery. There may not have been service here anymore but that's not to say there won't be service somewhere else so we can get some good assistance. We made our way to the convienence store, not far from the lobby. The door was wide open and it looked like it had been picked. "Well, we need the supplies before we head out to search for survivors. Let us see what can be had still." My brain was whirling and whipping so fast that I was sure it would just come off on it's own. Yeah, the store had been looted but nothing major. Simple items like bread and baked good were gone but that wasn't wat wee were looking for. The canned goods, however, were untouched. Digging out a resuable bag, we loaded it up. Next, we grabbed some plastic bags and loaded them up for transport back upstairs. Crap! How would I let that woman know I have food for her? Damon was quick to get a makeshift pulley system going, with what we could find in the store.
