CURSE OF A FULL MOON
CHAPTER ONE The rain drummed against the roof as the wind wailed with the night. “Your still here,” Lucas said with a nefarious smile. “Where is dad?” I asked with the image my eyes beheld dancing and whirling in front of me. “He’s outside,” Lucas answered with perturbed tone. His frame more huge than that of a normal thirteen year old. “ What sort of curse turns a human into a wild animal?” I brushed his question aside trying my best to move my arm but they were chained tight to a metal chair. “Dad!!!” I yelled. “He’s outside. Didn’t you hear me.” Dad walked I a few minutes later with zigzagging lines of sweat running down from his face and unto his white apron. Different faces walked behind me but threw themselves a few paces back upon sighting me with their eyes storing tales of shock and terror. “I suggest we kill him. That’s the sensible thing to do.” a man with huge spectacles said. His eyes running away whenever they met with mine. “I won’t kill my son, Robert,” he replied with a snarl. “Then what do we do then?” a woman asked as the little gathering grew anxious passing murmurs from one corner to the other as their bodies became tense casting a glare or two my way every now and then. “Calm down, Everyone,” Dad said but their discrepant murmurs gonged at his ears consistently with their eyes and faces showing their fading hope. “Calm down!” he yelled again slapping the table. The echoing table ushered silence amongst them as he let out deep breaths. “ I am his father, and I believe I can cure him.” “All I need is time.” “Time is the one luxury we can’t afford. We have to find a way to cure him soon or he might be the end of us all,” the spectacled man responded. The rain slowly died giving birth to a full fledged night and overhead a full moon rose from the clouds. It started by grabbing my shoulder trying to run it in any abnormal direction. I tried my best to quell the pain but it took another drag at my other shoulder. Lucas gazed at me sighting my folded clubbed fist riddled with emboldened veins. “Dad,” he called out but the little gathering in front of him garnered his attention. My bones began twisting in all the wrong directions as I screeched. My whelping cry of pain stole his attention and when he turned round. Huge foams of saliva now covered my lips. The spectators gasped in horror pushing themselves further backward. “ Don’t be afraid. He can’t break the reinforced steel chair,” Dad said but even his eyes betrayed his words and when he stared into my eyes he could see them flash different colors of a raging red. Long black hairs started sticking out of my neck as I flashed fangs at them. The steel chair stuck close to my arms whilst they cried to be free. A long roar and I yanked one arm out. Their eyes each held a petrified glow of shock. Each of them scrambling for the door as everyone tried to desert the laboratory. I undid my other arm and howled into the night. Dad stood in front of me with an arm out trying to keep me at bay with his words. “Please, Henry stay...Fight it please.” But with every step I took his bones shook quivering at my sight. His lips failed to find words to suffice his stuttering as I launched at him, taking a deep bite of his flesh as he screamed. The taste of fresh blood tingled my senses like ice cream to a baby. “Aaahhhh,” Lucas screamed long and hard skirting off as I ran after him, tossed him down and dragged him across the wooden floor. My teeth pricked at his groin and my jaws dabbled against it. He cried rolling, dragging himself along trying to get as far away from me as possible. The onlookers were my course for desert by the time I was done. They each laid in a pool of their own blood, laying down with eyes wide open and dead shouts for help. I ran with the wind howling into the night as I entered the woods. I could feel it overpowering me packaging my thoughts aside with every stride. The sun shone its light on me as I found myself rolling amongst dead tree leaves. The strongest migraine knocked against my brain. Flashes of my father’s terrified face blipped into my mind. “What...How...How did I get here?” I muttered woozy with tangled feet that tied themselves up. “Hold it there,” a strong voice ordered. He grabbed me by the arm and threw me to the ground. “Who are you and what are you doing here?” he asked with a gun to my skull. “I don’t know sir,” I replied squeezing myself. “What’s your name, I said?” he asked again this time throwing off his hat. “Hen..Henry Rh..Rh..Rhodes sir,” I replied quivering. He dragged me up, dusting whatever piece of stick or rusted leaves clinked to me. He took me back to Rhodes Mansion upon his horse knocking heavily upon the front door waiting for a reply. “Who is it,” a voice finally sent forth. The massive doors creaked open to reveal moms face. Her eyes enveloped in bags with freckles dotting her cheeks as she stoned a cold hard glance. “Good morning, madam. I’m Mr Samuel Beckett from Lilies Peak. I was in the middle of a hunt when I saw one of your sons.” “You should have shot him then. He’s more animal than human,” she said with a sob. “He’s your though,” he said pushing me in. “Thanks,” she said cementing their little conversation with a handshake. “You can call on me whenever you need,” Mr Beckett added before darting off to reunite with his horse. “Good morning, mother,” I greeted as she slammed the door closed. “And what’s so good about the morning,” she said after a brief pause. Dried blood glues to her palm as she grabbed a hold of my shirt. “You stand in front of me like an innocent child but deep down you’re a monster.” “But mother what did I do wrong?” I asked staring into her eyes as she looked back at mine. “You really don’t remember, do you? Perhaps this will jog your memory,” she said running down the flight of stairs and rolling Lucas on a wheelchair in front of me “Lucas,” I said with hot blinding tears rolling down slowly. His head dropped as he turned away from me. “You did this to your own brother and now you’ve made me a widow.” A long line of sweat formed around my forehead. My mouth opened to spill words but nothing left my tongue. “I...I...I...I’m sorry,” I said watching as mother collapsed her back into the stiff sofa fighting tentatively to push back the swelling current in her eyes. Things were never the same from that day on, but that was 24 years ago and worse things had happened since then. CHAPTER TWO The carriage rode past the dusty town square of Granville galloping along every stemmed stone on the path which the rider was too blind to navigate pass. “How could you do this?” I asked staring at the black dots lining his face. “I’ve already told you. We made the best decision. You’ll like him,” he said in a low baritone. “They say he’s a beast. I find that unlikely,” I replied adjusting the rough edges of my black gown which my tailor had intricately sewn to make me choose between breathing and looking beautiful. “I know you’re enjoying this, Pascal. There’s no need to suppress the cringe to laugh.” His face lit up as he leaned forward, pouring soft whispers into my ears. “I most certainly do, sister.” “Bastard,” I iterated watching as we breezed pass the rows of trees that stood either side of the path. The carriage came to an abrupt halt a walking distance to a huge mansion that sat high on the landscape with dull grey clouds hanging over it. “We’re here,” he said taking me by the hand. My eyes ran in every direction as they found it hard to digest the pictures of the perverse scenery they took. Far back the sun sprinkled its golden rays over the little town but up here the clouds bestowed a grey cover distorting all colour. “Good afternoon Mr and Miss Beckett,” a short hunched man greeted. “How was the trip from Liles Peak? “Quite wonderful,” I said with a faint smile. A few steps ahead laid a cemetery at the foot of the mansion. The large grave stones popped from the ground with every written word they possessed clawed off. “Nice little cemetery you have here,” I said to which he responded with a chuckle rushing off to hold the gigantic wooden door in place for our entrance. “Nice place,” Pascal said with eyes rummaging everywhere from the alluring brown ceilings, to the well crafted Persian rug that slept beneath our feet. I threw my palm away from his dashing off to the seat the short hunched man gestured for me to occupy. “See your already liking it here...” “I hope you die on your way back,” I interrupted. “There she is,” a feminine voice rose from behind him. “Good day, my lady,” he greeted reducing to a knee while I stood up slowly for fear of ripping those skin clutching stitches that held the gown together. “Good day,” she responded brushing her fan past him. “How was the journey, Joanne?” “Fine, my lady,” I answered shortly. The air around the room couldn’t penetrate into my lungs, rushing back out instead after every quick breath. “I’m Adeline Rhodes and you seem short of breath,” she said running her wrinkled hands down my shoulder with her hair spread evenly across hers. “I...I am.” “Adolphus,” she called into the dark corridor as her call pulled out the short hunched man. “Yes, my lady,” he said with a bow. “Show her to her room.” “Right this way,” he said with a smile that showcased the loops of missing teeth he possessed. Pascal watched as I threw him a frown to which he reciprocated a soul wrenching smile that made me wish to be close enough to him to smack it away. CHAPTER THREE It had been two days since my arrival and my skin had began to pale like the scenery surrounding me as Pascal was long gone with that evening sky and I was yet to meet my husband, “Mr. Rhodes,” as the household normally referred to him. I walked into the living room in search of Mrs. Adeline to lay my complaints. “My lady,” I said scouring the room. ‘My...” “She isn’t here,’ a bass voice interrupted. He sat cross legged on a couch that hid his frame from view. “And you must be the new experiment,” he said turning to me. “I’m Joanne, Mr...” “Lucas,” he quickly replied with folded skinny arms. His voice cold against the warm air this house kept captive. “She keeps trying. It’s certain you’ll fail.” “At what, sir?” I asked with an inquisitive gaze. He stood towering over me with his shadow cast on me. “At everything. I’m flabbergasted mother managed to find a damsel stupid enough to marry into a town haunted with mysterious disappearances and death.” “I wouldn’t say choose, more like sold and I’m not dumb,” I said shifting my feet indefinitely on a spot. “That solves one thing,” he said leaning forward with an eye roll breezing past with a nonchalance decked upon his high shoulders that it left a pit in my stomach. “I haven’t seen my husband to be,” I said chasing after him, struggling to match his massive strides. “If you knew who your husband to be was I don’t think you’d be hopping around looking for him but don’t worry I’m sure you’ll see Henry soon,” he said before vanishing into a dark corridor. My return saw the door to my room ajar. “Who the hell went into my room,” I cursed, strolling in to find a huge frame of a man perfectly perched on my sheets. “Who are you and what are you doing on my bed?” “I should be asking you that,” he replied with a calmness on his tongue. He jumped off the bed, flexing his extravagant muscles whilst tending to the hairs on his hairy chest, throwing a shirt over his body as he motioned for the door before my words caught him in his tract. “I haven’t seen my husband to be.” He turned sharply making me his point of focus. “What makes you think I’m your husband to be?” “I never said you were. Are you?” I asked with dimmed eyes and a tilted head. His eyes darted away from me as he shifted his locks firmly behind his ear. “Maybe,” he replied slamming the door. I never saw him till darkness engulfed the heavens but if he were my husband to be he'd come back to this room. “Welcome,” I greeted sat upon my bed. He came jolting in as the lantern illuminated his bony jawline. “I thought you’d be asleep by now,” he said. “Well, I couldn’t sleep without my husband to be by my side.” He turned with a question etched on his face. “What makes you think I’m your husband to be?” “Well, because I’m sure my husband to be would come back to this room,” I said walking up to him tenaciously. “People say a lot about you, Mr Henry Rhodes. They say you’re a beast.” “You should believe them.” “I want to know what kind of beast you are?” I asked running my slender fingers down each line of open buttons. “The kind you should avoid,” he replied grabbing my arm and throwing it off. “Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of, woman. I’m not interested,” he said storming off. The mansion buried itself in silence by night and by daybreak a plethora of footsteps echoed against its walls. “Mrs. Adeline, Good morning,” I greeted bending to bow. “Morning dear,” she responded with a capricious smile drawn on her face. “I have a few complaints,” I started off. “Firstly, my lady you kept me here for two days without ever bothering to introduce me to my husband to be and then my husband to be isn’t even interested in me. I mean...” “Joanne!!!” she yelled wrinkling her smile for a moment before placing it gently again. “I brought you here because I need an heir. All these properties need to stay in my family.” “But...” “And my son isn’t getting any younger.” A cluster of hot breath left my nostrils as I sighed. “So how do I make his work?” “You’re an elegantly beautiful woman in your early twenties.” “Late twenties,” I immediately corrected. “Seduction. Seduce him,” she said with her smile now spreading to the brim of her cheeks. “I tried that yesterday and he tossed me aside.” “Try again and some effort into it this time.” “After this what’s my gain,” I asked. If I was going to put myself through all this there had to be a prize for me. “Your full weight in gold,” she replied. Hours later before the conclave of dusk he charged into the living room with fury in his stomp. I watched from the door as it unfolded. “How could you mother. You know she’s in danger.” “I care not for what you do with her,” she said turning sharply. “Haven’t I paid enough for my sins. What must I do for you to truly forgive me.” “An heir Henry that’s all I ask,” she said walking towards the door as I rushed to hide behind the staircase. His growl resonated against the walls as he drew the door shut. There was a lot of pent up emotions circling round him as he dashed for the dying rays of sunlight just outside the front door but nonetheless I was still going to try again. CHAPTER FOUR The sun sank sharply under the earth and I had already set the mood for my evening when he barged in. “Good evening, honey,” I said with a wide picturesque smile. “I thought I told you to get lost. We aren’t married yet so you can stop with the sweet names,” he replied dropping his pocket knife and heading for the door. “Stop please,” I said grabbing him by the arm. “I heard it all. You and my mother. You can have it all and just go.” My eyes blew open as my hand grabbed my chest. “How...But...I” “I’m sorry. I guess I was too desperate to get to know you as my husband but you weren’t showing the same desperation. He jerked my arm off him, staring at me whilst biting his lips. “I...I just want to know you,” I said dropping my gaze to the floor too convicted to look into his eyes. “Do you?” “Yes, I do.” “Do you?!” “Yes,” I said shifting back till the table became the end of the road. He looked outside the window to see a full moon hung on display over the night sky. The edges of his fingers latched onto mine as he pulled me from the room to the hallway to a staircase that descended into someplace the darkness shrouded from our eyes. “Wait, Henry.’ I stopped to catch my fleeting breath. These medieval gowns had a habit of pushing air out of your lungs. “Where are you taking me?” “To where you’ll be able to know me more,” he replied sharply. “Hurry up now,” he said tugging at my arm. “I don’t like damsels in distress.” “Seriously,” I replied with a chuckle before descending with him. The stairs brought us to a shed basking beneath the moonlight as Henry’s breathing intensified. Beads of sweat drooled down his body as he ripped the door off its hinges. “Henry, what’s wrong?” I asked as he tossed it aside. “Watch,” he replied with a growl in his voice. His veins emboldened along every artery. The chuckles on my face were now long banished and replaced by an avid array of wrinkled lines on my forehead. “Henry,” I said softly watching him chain himself up from ankle to wrist to neck. It happened all in a minutes notice, the snappy distortion of bones and ligaments caught me off guard while his screams of nerve rattling pain flew off the roof of the shed. “Henry,” I called out with pulsating breath that hung on my chest as I slowly relinquished the hold I preserved on the hem of my garment up till now. The knocks of my racing heart banged against my ribs as my arm made a futile attempt to catch it. His nails rapidly elongated, while he flashed fangs at my face. In no time he had changed , standing on all fours. His fur black as the night he stood under. My jaw dropped as I slowly waltzed back. Those chains struggled to hold him back. They crackled against his every pull and before I could make a run for it he was free. My ankle buckled and I laid on the freshly dewed grass. My legs failing me as usual whenever it was time for flight. He stood a fair inches away from me growling with fumes of slimy saliva drenching those fangs. All my screams slowly morphed into whispers under the warm night breeze as he approached. I scurried across the ground too petrified to keep a feet as he stood before me breathing down my neck as I froze with jittery nerves wrapped around a trembling skin and a mind and face that had turned away bracing for the worst. He poured his hot moist breath on my fidgeting frame, placing its snout so close to my slender neck that I was sure it was going to take a bite but he backed off slowly, staring motionless at me before vanishing into the bushes overhead. I recollected myself fleeing with a cold in my bones even though it was warm. Racing for the comfort of my room I slammed the door shut and folded my shaky legs, chaining with my arms as I rocked back and forth upon the soft mattress staring blankly at the wall. CHAPTER FIVE He flung the door open throwing a fit of laughter upon once he saw my jittery state. “I thought you wanted to know me more?” “You...incoherent bastard. You should have killed me then.” He sat by the edge of the bed with a smirk plastered on one side of his cheeks. “If you’re alive it’s because it wants you alive. I have no control once it takes over every full moon.” “Perhaps it likes you.” I rose up and stood by the door with folded arms trying to calm my dancing body. “I am an experiment,” I said aloud as the thought hit me. “More like a favour. I guess you’ve met my elder brother,” he said with a slight chuckle. “A favour, an experiment. What exactly am I to you people?” He jumped up and held me by the shoulder feeling my body vibrate against his palm. “You can go now. I won’t hold it against you. I don’t want a pretty lady like you getting hurt,” he said brushing back the rough strands of my brown hair that covered my face with his finger. “Is that what you did to those people in the cemetery at the mansion.” “My wives, you mean.” His shoulders fell as his head slowly followed suit. He took me over the cemetery standing over it with hot boiling tears frolicking against his lids. “Mary, Celeste, Edwina, Abigail.” “I loved them. Each them so special in their own way. They melted my heart and I...” “I don’t deserve your love. I destroy everything I touch,” he said with a sob. I placed an arm on his broad shoulder. His skin hot almost as if he had a fever yet he was so very calm. “I’m sorry,” I said looking up to his eyes. “Do you still want to know me,” he asked once I had shut the door to our room. “I...I really don’t know.” “Answer me honestly, Joanne. Do you still want to know me?!!” “I don’t know,” I yelled back. “I don’t know. I...” I latched my lips against his, tying my hands against his neck. He pushed me away, staring into my eyes before reeling me back into his arms. We toppled anything that stood in our way, demolishing them to the floor. We rolled our warm bodies against each other. His hotter than mine though. A strong grip he took of my gown before ripping it as I too returned the favour to his shirt, exposing that hairy chest whose hairs tingled my skin whenever he drew me closer. His hand weaved delicately through every row of my slender vertebrae and even though I could feel the strength behind his every grip, I was the one who tossed him to the sheets. He strummed the nerve on my body with soft kisses like the strings of a guitar as he pinned me under his frame. He walked his lips to my lower abdomen and I held him down there by his locks, Never wanting him to stop. Never wanting him to let go. CHAPTER SIX I woke up to the incessant exchange of words that walked the stairs to my room as I laid upon a vacant bed. Though the voices were blatantly loud I couldn’t pick a word that came across. The tension was near breaking point when I arrived and I quickly perched an ear on the door. “It’s always about Henry, Even after all he’s done. You never give a thought about me, mother,” Lucas yelled. “You already know why I can’t give you any of your fathers properties.,” Adeline replied. “And who’s fault is it that I’m impotent. I mean he literally chewed it off that night at the laboratory, Mother. You know this.” My hand rushed to pick my gaping mouth. “W...what if she gives birth to another monstrosity like him?” “Then I’ll be contented that I and your fathers sweat didn’t fall into wrong hands.” “If you don’t give it to me. I'll do it I promise you,” he said with heavy breath. “You wouldn’t dare,” she said rising from her chair. “I believe you to be smarter than this Lucas.” “You never believed anything about me but I’m sure they will,” he said dropping a sigh before he reached the door as his eyes caught a glance of me. “Hope that fills your ears, experiment.” My legs carried me swiftly through the stairs. “You heard them right,” he said. His words catching me from behind and startled me towards the door. “You scared me,” I said with a hand over my chest. “I’m responsible for the many deaths in this town. I’m the reason children don’t play outside. The people were right. I am a beast.” “But that wasn’t you. It was controlling you.” “You can’t differentiate between me and it. It’s a curse that has eaten deep into my soul. “Killer or not you’re my future husband,” I said yanking his chin as I delivered a soft kiss. “I...I can’t believe I’m saying this,” I said with a light chuckle. “But I love...I love you.” As he stared into my eyes, I could feel him want me close to him evident through the way he tightened his grip around my waist. He pulled me in so close I stood underneath his shadow feeling every breath walk in and leave his body. “I...I love you too.” For the first time this unmannered junkie lost his firm masculine voice, stuttering to utter a word to me as he stared blindly into my dark eyes. We laid in bed till the dead of night when bright flaming torches stood below our window. “Lucas what on earth have you done?” Mrs. Adeline asked. “Bringing an end to the terrorizer of this town. Bring out the beast or we burn this place to the ground.” “ It’s your home too,” she said gently touching his hand. He cringed upon contact tossing her hand away. “I don’t care. If I can’t have it then no one can.” “They want me.,” he said deserting me by the window. “And I will give myself to them.” “What?” I asked. “You can’t just leave me alone.” He exhaled deeply holding my palm in his. “Joanne, you are one of the weirdest girls I’ve ever met and I can confidently give you all I have. I’m sure you’ll move on too.” “Self Righteous Bastard,” I said beating at his chest. He closed the door gently, gliding through the stairs and barging through that gigantic mahogany wooden door. The crowd raised there flames torches illuminating the street. “Bring him out. Bring him out,” they chorused until he burst into the scene. “Henry no,” Adeline said rushing back to force him inside but he shrugged her off. He presented his wrist forward in which they wasted no time in shackling up with chains. Once his arms were secured, Lucas stomped him to his knees cracking a whip against his flesh. “I’m sorry for the pain I’ve cause you,” he said to Lucas with glistening tears tricking down his brows. “Sorry doesn’t cut it anymore, brother.” The groans of Henry’s agony only fuelled his devilish grin.
