Frankie
It took about twenty minutes for me to run home. Hazel whined and protested the entire time. She wanted me to go back and claim Clayton. The packhouse comes into view, and I cringe when I see Harvey smoking a cigarette out front. I stop right before the door and shift.
Of course, Harvey smirks when he sees my naked body. “Mmm, I like this side of you, Frankie,” He reaches out to touch me, but I dodge him.
I try to ignore him and quickly put on my clothes. ‘Garrett, are you in the office?’ I mind link my beta.
‘Yeah, Tyler and Aubrey are here also,’ Garrett responds.
“Frankie,” Harvey calls from behind me. “Wait.”
I huff and turn to him. “What? I have work to do.”
“Where were you? I asked Garrett, and he said you were with some human,” Harvey snorts.
I roll my eyes. Like hell, I am going to tell him about Clayton. “It was a business lunch. So non of your business,” I turn and start towards my office. Harvey walks beside me.
“You are a beautiful woman. I think you would look good on my arm,” He hums.
“And you would be like an ass boil,” I smirk.
Harvey scoffs. “Pretty ladies shouldn’t have such dirty mouths,” He tsks.
“I am not a pretty lady. I am the Alpha of a large wolf pack,” I say as we reach the door to my office. “This meeting is only for members of Midnight Moon.” I open the door and rush into the office. I shut the door and shudder. “Why is that dillweed Harvey hanging out again?” I mumble as I walk to my desk.
“You know why,” Garrett responds.
I face the three men. I am glad that Tyler’s dad Aubrey is here. “So, what happened?”
“We found another omega body on the border close to where we found Larry,” Tyler explains.
“Have the humans seen it?” I ask.
“No, but we can call your mate if you like,” Garrett smirks.
“Mate?” Aubrey blurts out. “When did that happen?”
I sit in my chair in a huff. “Yesterday,” I close my eyes.
“Where is he?” Aubrey asks.
“He’s an FBI agent,” Garrett blurts out.
“Garrett!” I bark at my beta. Aubrey lets out a laugh. “Gods, I don’t know what to do about it. Everyone thinks I’m a failure as an alpha already and let's just add a f*****g human into the equation.”
“Frankie,” Audrey presses his hands on the desk and looks down at me. “Sweetheart, most of this pack think you are doing just fine. Vinnie taught you well. Don’t listen to what the other alphas are telling you. They are just greedy pricks who want this land for their own gain.”
I sigh and offer a small smile to Aubrey. He was always like an uncle to me as he and my father were close friends. “But a human?”
“Having a human mate isn’t always a bad thing,” Aubrey responds. “You just have to tread carefully with them, of course. Do you like him?”
I can’t help but smile at his question. “He does seem like a nice guy, and I like his daughter.”
“He has a daughter?” Garrett asks.
“Yeah, she is ten and just adorable. He divorced her mother,” I explain.
“I think you should give him a chance, Frankie. A mate, whether human or wolf, will give you strength,” Aubrey explains to me.
“You sound like my mother,” I chuckle.
“Well, Carol and I agree on a lot of things.”
I shake my head. “Okay, let’s focus on this body. Do we know who it was?” I ask.
“Not yet. The coroner was still trying to identify it,” Garrett responds.
“Well, maybe check for any pack members acting distraught,” I look at Tyler.
“On it,” Tyler nods. “Dad, want to come with me to speak with the pack?”
“Sure, Ty,” Aubrey responds. He turns to me. “You got this girl.” He winks and then follows Tyler out of the office.
I look at Garrett. “Is there a crime scene?” I ask.
“Uh, probably,” Garrett responds. “Are you going to go all detective on me now?” He laughs.
“I’m serious, Garrett. Maybe I can ask Clayton for help,” I stand up. “Let’s go take pictures and evidence.”
“Frankie, do you hear yourself?” Garrett scoffs.
“Garrett, someone is killing off our pack members. We need to find out what or who. Clayton did say they found Roscoe Graves’s DNA at the scene.” I sigh. Roscoe Graves was a rogue leader who plagued the pack when I was much younger. My father said Roscoe was dead. But I believe Roscoe isn’t dead and is the reason for my father and brother’s deaths. I also think he is behind the deaths of my pack member, and the DNA proves it.
“Roscoe is dead, though,” Garrett argues.
“Then why did the FBI find his DNA?” I glare at my beta. “I am going down to the morgue to question Dr. Haynes. Then I am going out to the crime scene. You don’t have to come.” I grab my phone, walk around the desk, and start for the door.
Garrett grabs my arm. “I'll come with you. Someone has to keep you safe.”
“I can take care of myself, Garrett.” I roll my eyes and open the door. Garrett and I walk towards the door just as my mother and sister are coming in. They both have multiple shopping bags in their hands.
“You missed the fun, Frankie,” Jamie teases.
“I had work to do,” I say to my sister.
“How was lunch with your mate?” My mother smiles at me.
“Mom!” I protest. I don’t want it known that I have a mate yet. “How did you know?”
“Well, a bunch of pack members saw you leaving the territory with a human earlier. I guessed it was your mate,” She tells me.
“Yeah, I went to lunch with Clayton.”
“Frankie has a mate?” Jamie blurts out loudly. Luckily there isn’t anyone else around.
“You need to keep that on the down-low, Jamie,” I tell my sister.
“Oh, come on, Frankie,” Jamie whines.
“Mom,” I look at our mother.
My mother huffs. “Jamie, you need to keep that information to yourself for now.”
“Anyways, I have work to do. I’ll see you both later for dinner,” I tell them and walk away. I hear Jamie saying something to our mother but don’t quite catch it. Garrett and I hurry to the morgue, which is in the basement of our pack hospital. The hospital is a block down from the packhouse.
We make it to the hospital and go down to the morgue. The coroner is sitting at a desk in front of the doors. He looks up. “Alpha,” He acknowledges me.
“Dr. Haynes,” I nod at him. “I need to see the body.”
“What body?” He mumbles.
“The recent one,” I tell him.
“It’s pretty chewed up, Alpha. We had trouble identifying it.” He stands up.
“So, you did identify the body?” I ask, and the coroner nods. “Who?”
“Simon Olson, he was a mechanic.” Dr. Haynes tells me.
“Oh, Simon,” I sigh. “He was one of my Dad’s buddies.”
“Yeah,” the doctor mumbles.
“I’d still like to see the body,” I demand.
“Alpha, I just said it’s pretty chewed up. You don’t want to see that,” Dr. Haynes argues.
“Show me the body, Dr. Haynes,” I order in my alpha tone.
The doctor sighs deeply and leads up into the morgue. He pulls out the body and lowers the sheet. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
I look at the mangled body and try not to cringe. Poor Simon looks like his face went through a meat grinder. The rest of his naked body is mangled with his hands missing. I sigh.
“Did you take pictures?” I ask the coroner.
“Yes,” Dr. Haynes responds.
“I need them,” I tell him.
The doctor scoffs and looks at Garrett. “Is she well, Beta?”
“Doctor, I would advise you to do what your alpha tells you to do,” Garrett snarls at Dr. Haynes. “We are investigating what happened to this member of our pack and seeing if it was related to what happened to Larry Johnson.”
“I would say they are related,” Dr. Haynes mumbles and hands me a USB drive. “The picture is all on there. I have what I need on my computer.”
“Thank you,” I tell him and look at Garrett. “Off to the crime scene then.”
Garrett and I leave the hospital and walk towards the woods. Tyler and Aubrey meet up with us.
“The deceased is Simon Olson,” Tyler tells me. “Dad and I were just talking to his son, Guy.”
“And his mate?” I ask my gamma.
“I guess Simon’s mate died many years ago. Guy is his only family,” Aubrey adds.
“Should we shift to get to the scene?” I ask.
“We can get there by car,” Aubrey responds.
We head to the garage and pile into an SUV. Tyler drives us close to where they found Simon. Tyler points to where Larry was found on our way. We reach the scene, and blood spatters all over the ground and the tress.
“So, are they bringing the victims out here and killing them?” I ask as I start to take pictures with my phone. “I wish we had something to take DNA,” I mumble
Aubrey holds something up. “Way ahead of you, Frankie,” I see a few plastic bags and cotton swabs with gloves in the bags. “I grabbed these after we left the office.”
“Oh, thank the Goddess for you, Aubrey,” I smile at him and grab the bags. I put on a pair of gloves. “So I think this is how the humans do it.” I start to swab the bloody areas. ‘Am I doing this right?’ I mumble to myself.
‘You are doing this just to see Clayton again,’ Hazel snickers.
‘You have been quiet for hours,’ I snark at her.
‘I was sad,’ She counters. ‘You ran from our mate.’
‘I didn’t run from him. I had to come home to take care of the pack, Hazel,’ I nearly yell at her. ‘We will see Clayton again.’
“Frankie?” Garrett touches my shoulder, and I jump.
“What?” I yell. I shake my head. “Sorry, I was having a debate with Hazel.” I collect a few samples. “Should we label these?” I ask.
The guys all shrug, “We are wolves, not detectives, Frankie,” Garrett complains.
Aubrey just hands me a marker. “Do you have a suspect?”
I press my lips together. “Clayton said they found DNA from Roscoe Graves.”
Audrey’s eyes go wide. “He’s dead, Frankie.”
“Well, his DNA has somehow wound up on our first crime scene, and I suspect it may be on this one. So explain that, Aubrey,” I say to the former gamma.
“Frankie, I watched your father kill Roscoe,” Aubrey sighs.
“And you are sure that he was dead?” I ask.
“Well, y-yeah.” Aubrey stutters.
I fold my arms and look at Aubrey. “Why the stutter?”
“I watched Vinnie kill Roscoe. Then Matt made me leave and told me they would take care of it,” Aubrey mentions Garrett’s father. “But I never did see a body. I just believe Vinnie.”
I sigh. “I don’t know what’s going on, Aubrey. But we are going to get to the bottom of it,” I look at Tyler. “In the meantime, we need to increase patrols.”
“We already did that, Frankie,” Tyler argues.
I label the bags and take more pictures. “Okay, I think that’s all.” I look around for anything out of the ordinary on the ground. I find a gold chain and pick it up and pocket it. “Okay, let’s head back to the packhouse,” I tell the guys.
“Good, I need a shower,” Garrett shudders.
“Oh, quit being a p***y, Garrett,” Tyler snorts.
“I’m not a p***y, Tyler. I just don’t like touching blood and stuff,” Garrett shudders.
“You are a werewolf,” Tyler argues.
“Knock it off, idiots,” I say to them as we hike back to the SUV.
We drive back to the house, and I go to the office while the guys go about their duties. I set the bags on my desk and turned on the computer.
‘Take them to Clayton,’ Hazel urges me. ‘You know you want to see him again.’
‘I have work to do, Hazel,’ I argue with my wolf.
‘And?’ She huffs.
I sigh and turn off the computer. I place the bags into a large tote bag and walk out of my office.
“Francine? Where are you going?” My mother says as I walk down the hall. She is just coming out of her office.
“I have to go do something,” I tell her.
“What?” She eyes the bag.
“Mom, don’t worry about it,” I sigh and walk away from her.
“Don’t get snarky with me, Francine,” She shouts.
I turn to her. “I am just taking care of things, okay?”
“Just be back for dinner,” Mom sighs.
I turn away from her and quicken my pace to the garage. I get into my father’s Mercedes and head for Clayton’s office. It takes around thirty minutes to get to the FBI HQ. Inside there is a secured entry. A few security guards are standing by a window, which I assume is where I gain access. I walk up. “Hi, I’m here to speak with Special Agent Clayton Marshall,” I say to a male security guard sitting down.
