Well, this is awkward. He stood there fully dressed in casual clothes. His gaze bore into my nervous ones. His expression was unreadable, but I knew deep down I was in some serious s**t.
“Riley.” Jacob called and she walked up to him. He whispered something in her ear that had her leading him to her bedroom, leaving me alone with Zane. We both stood there staring at each other. Great. Just f*****g great.
“So, yeah, it was nice seeing you. Gotta go bye.” I said as I tried to make a dash passed him. He caught my arm, pulling me towards him.
“Not so fast.” We were damn near chest to chest. My heart was beating fast as if it was going to pop out of my chest. I couldn’t look in his eyes. Not being this close to him. Giving my best fake smile, I finally looked up at him, his eyes dark and clouded with mysteries that I just want to solve.
“Disregard that phone call. I really have to go,” I urged as I tried to move again. He blocked every direction I was going in. “Where do you have to go, Ari? You called in, remember?” Zane walked closer to me and I stepped back trying to put space in between us.
“I-um.” Clearing my throat, I tried to find my voice again, but Zane spoke first. “You know, you’re really interesting. I must admit you definitely caught my attention.” I was blocked by Riley’s couch and closed in by Zane. He leaned towards me, his voice was barely a whisper.
“By the way, I haven’t touched a woman since I had you in my bed, babe.” Heat rose to my cheeks and I was embarrassed for that stupid little act. It felt good to know that he hasn’t been sleeping with anyone else.
“I’m sorry that was the tequila talking. We have a love-hate relationship,” I confessed to him. God he smelled so good. His minty breath mixed with his masculine scent made me feel dizzy. Or maybe the tequila hit me harder than I thought. “If you wanted more of me, Ari, all you had to do was ask.” He growled as he planted small kisses on my cheek. “You know this egotistical, controlling, cocky son of a-“
“Zane.” I said in a breathy voice. He was making me lose all of my senses again.
“I can make you melt with a snap of my fingers, babe.” He whispered as he moved away from me. Yes, he could and I was cursing myself for allowing him to have that effect on me. “Come on, I’m taking you home.” He demanded as he waited by the door.
“I can drive myself,” I argued.
“You can barely see straight. Don’t be stupid.” He said as if he’s annoyed. Well guess what? So am I. “Don’t make me carry you over my shoulder, although I may enjoy that pretty ass against my face.” My eyes widened, imagining that scenario.
“You wouldn't do that.” I hissed.
“You want to try me?” He provoked, with a serious expression. Be smart about it, Ari. I reminded myself. “Fine, but I want to go home as in my house.” I clarified. He opened the door for me as I stomped towards the door.
“Lead the way.” He had a glint in his eye.
That mesmerizing smirk that I think about all the time. Does he have to look good all the time? We were in my car and on the road in no time. The silent treatment was definitely a buzz kill. “I’m hungry.” I said to him. He didn’t say anything back, instead he was focused on the road. He turned into a drive thru food place and gave our order. Once we received our food, we ate silently as I began to sober up. He still didn’t say anything to me and I wondered what was on his mind.
“Zane?”
My throat was a bit dry and I took a sip of the soda. “I’m sorry. I was out of line.” His silence was making my heart drop. “It won’t happen again. Please forgive me. That was childish on my behalf.” I tried my best to get him to say something to me. Nothing. The car ride to my house was silent. Was he really mad at me?
“Every action has consequences. I don’t know how many times I’ve told you this.” Yes.. talk to me, punish me, but don’t go silent on me. His voice alone made me feel a little more happier. “You’re not some twenty one year old. You’re twenty eight years old, Ari. Act like it. I’m not always going to be around to save you.” His tone was serious as we pulled into my driveway. All I wanted to do now was lay down and sleep off this intoxication.
“You’re right. I’ve been so unprofessional with you lately. You are my boss.” I made an ass of myself. How could I do this? If my dad saw me now, he would’ve had a fit. We got out of the car and I led him to the door. He had the keys already so he unlocked it, letting me in first. The cool air blasted throughout the house. I always loved my place cool. I knew I came home earlier and changed but I don’t remember this smell. I began coughing and gasping for air. My eyes became even more blurry. “Ari!” Zane called. My legs became weak and I felt myself falling to the ground.
“Oh s**t!” Zane yelled as my body gave up and collapsed and everything went black.
