Derek's POV
"Why are you so glum?" Kevin asked me as soon as we entered pack lands.
"Yeah! You've been this way all the day" Kian joined that only made me a little more irritated.
Verna's words were the only thing I had in my mind all day. What does she really mean dad has changed? How was he in the past? Is she trying to get me or is she innocent?
I really have no idea and that is eating up my brain. I want to ask Dad but I just can't. I trust my dad but these questions are way too much right now.
"Hey Der-" I didn't even smile at my mom and she understood.
"What's wrong?" She asked me but I didn't answer and walked straight to my room.
"He's been this way since morning" I heard Kian's voice while closing the door.
I debated if I should call Lana and talk to her mother or leave this right here taking this as a passing cloud.
I heard a knock on the door but didn't even want to yell a come in. I just sat on my bed with phone in hand still thinking whether to call Lana or not.
I heard the door creak and looked who wanted to get beaten.
"Heyo!" Abigail's head popped, making me roll my eyes.
"Don't roll your eyes at me you little one" she impersonated mom in a weird way making a smile creep on my face.
"There is that beautiful smile" she said walking towards me and sitting on my bed.
"Wanna talk about it?" She asked
I shook my head and stared down, afraid she'll see right through me. I felt a hand on my shoulder and moments later I felt her tiny arms around me.
"You are a strong one. Whatever is bothering you .. will fade away. I know it will. And if you want to talk, I'm right next door" she whispered gently patting my back.
Even though Abigail is just 15 she can be the most mature amongst us four at times. The only reason Kevin , Kian or I are still able to date human girls is because of her. Of course Lana is the only one I ever went on a date with because she wanted to know how a date feels like and me too.
"I love you" I mumbled, hugging her back.
"Too bad the feeling is not mutual" she laughed, making me hit her playfully.
"Are you alright?" She asked.
"Much better" I replied, making her nod and leave my room.
"Maybe you should talk to Dad about this. You know that he is always available for you right? Whatever the reason is.. dad can help you" she said before closing the door.
I thought about it for a while. Ok! Maybe I can talk to Dad. Not about the whole thing .. but enough for me to know if this Verna is good or just faking.
I ran downstairs and into dad's office where he just buried himself with files. My eyes went to the one he was holding that read bloodsuckers check.
Bloodsuckers?
"What's wrong?" Dad asked, analysing my face already.
"Uhh...umm can I have a minute with you dad?" I asked him.
He nodded and placed the file on the table before sitting in his chair, arms crossed.
"Do you know anyone by the name Verna?" I asked him.
He looked at me confused and shook his head as no. That was all I needed. That woman was weird as hell and she broke my whole mood the entire day.
"Who is she?" He asked and that's when sweat rolled down my forehead.
I didn't expect this question.
"My friend's mom. I met her today. She said she knows someone named Jaxon. For a second I thought it was you. I am mistaken .. obviously" I let out a nervous laugh.
"Don't lie Derek! I'm your dad" his voice was a low whisper.
"I would seek you if there is something wrong dad. But there is nothing" I said and this time it was true.
And dad dropped the topic looking into my eyes.
My phone dinged at the exact same moment that made dad look at me. His blue eyes twinkled and I was nervous.
"Girlfriend?" He asked with a playful smile.
"Jeez! No dad. I am only for my mate" I said standing up and exiting his office.
As soon as I reached my room I unlocked my phone to read Lana's text. I use my phone only for Lana. We all don't need one and Lana is the only human I mingle with. So it's pretty obvious it's her whenever my phone yells.
Lana : What did my step mom talk about?
Derek : She is indeed weird as hell.
Lana : Was that supposed to make me laugh?
Derek : Nothing much. And I gotta do Math homework. Text you later
I sent it and turned to my backpack. I am not a fan of not doing homework and I mostly refer to myself as a nerd. But Lana, Kian and Kevin called me a disguised nerd.
By the time I was done with my homework mom yelled from downstairs that the dinner was ready. I opened my door and was instantly filled with the aroma of steak.
"Especially for you," Mom said as soon as I reached the dining room.
I hugged her real tight and sat on the right side of the head chair. The head chair is for dad and to his left sits Mom.
The dinner was so good that I didn't waste my time talking to anyone and focused only on my food.
"You seem a lot better," Abigail whispered.
"I talked to Dad," I whispered back.
"Told ya!" She hit my shoulder making me smile and resumed eating my dinner.
My phone buzzed again and I looked at Dad. He looked at me and dabbed the corners of his mouth with a tissue.
"Seems like you made a lot of friends," Dad commented.
"No dad! It's just the project work" I tried to make up something but dad just laughed and let it slide.
After dinner and wishing everyone a good night I finally rushed to my room and plopped on my bed feeling the soft fluffy mattress under my skin.
I unlocked my phone expecting Lana's text but it was a private unknown number. And the text read
Good night Derek.
I replied asking who that person was and waited for a reply. If this is any girl from the school I am gonna block them. I don't want to mess with human girls.
Verna.
Reading that text suddenly brought back the weird feeling I had in my stomach. I didn't even reply and put my phone aside. I don't want to talk to her. She made up a lie that seemed like dad was a bad one in the past when in reality he is the best person.
With the thoughts of it...I drifted into deep slumber.

I woke up with an extreme headache and I didn't know what was happening. It felt like someone was hitting my head with hammers and poking with needles.
I tried to get up and walk to dad but failed when I fell down. I somehow managed to crawl till my door and open it.
"M-mom" I whispered hoping she would listen but no response.
"Dad!" I whispered a little louder and yet no one heard me.
I looked out of the window and it's morning already so I guess if I yell a little louder they could hear me.
But before I could I heard dad's footsteps and moments later I saw him running towards me.
"What's wrong?" Mom trailed behind him with worry written all over her face.
Dad touched my forehead and gasped.
"He is so hot! His first shift!!! Out of the way! Now!!!!" He growled, making everyone give him some way.
Dad carried me in his arms and it felt like I was a kid again. It also showed dad is still strong no matter his age. The Alpha King!!
He soon brought me to a clearing in the forest that is metres away from our pack house and laid me on the grass. That surface was cool but not cold enough to reduce the amount of heat my body is releasing.
The pain just kept on increasing and it's so horrible I thought I wouldn't make this shift. But that gave me a little more will power to endure it. I am Jaxon Malloy's son. The next Alpha King. I can make it.
I chanted and closed my eyes. I heard my bones c***k and I blacked out because of all the pain. I didn't know what happened but my only thought was
Maybe I couldn't really make it.
