CHAPTER SIX“I must see you alone.”
The Duke whispered the words to Lily as they walked round the garden after luncheon on Sunday, admiring the herbaceous borders brilliant with colour, the Rose Gardens fragrant with the scent of a thousand roses and the fountains sparkling high in the sunlight.
“It’s impossible. George is watching us,” Lily answered quickly.
“I don’t care. I have to talk to you. Walk with me now towards the water lily pond.”
“You are crazy. Everybody will see us.”
“I don’t care if they do,” the Duke said hotly. “I have not been able to say a word to you the whole of the past two days. Come with me now. I insist!”
