CHAPTER FOURMonday when I showed up for work, Eva found me right away. "I’m putting you on the serving line today, Nathan. We’re short a person, and I thought you’d like a change." A change. Well, no, I wouldn’t. Not only did I not want to have to stand there in a white smock with a flimsy net on my head, but also I wanted to be where Daniel was. I wanted to ask him about his hiking weekend. I almost suggested to Eva that perhaps someone else would love an opportunity to serve, as it were, but the way she was smiling at me told me she saw this as some kind of privilege.
