Chapter Five

777 Words
Ava's POV I stirred awake in a haze of confusion, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lights above me. My body felt heavy, weighed down by a suffocating blanket of pain. As I shifted slightly, a sharp jolt coursed through me, and I gasped, realizing I was wrapped in bandages. Where am I? The sterile scent of antiseptic filled the air, and as my eyes adjusted, I took in the stark white walls and the beeping machines surrounding me. Panic surged through me as memories of the accident flooded my mind—the rain, the screeching tires, the blinding headlights. A door creaked open, and a doctor stepped in, his expression a mix of sympathy and professionalism. “Good to see you awake, madam” “Where am I?” I croaked, my throat dry and scratchy. “You’re in the hospital. You were involved in a hit-and-run accident,” he explained gently, moving closer to check my vitals. “It’s a miracle you survived.” I felt the weight of his words settle heavily on me. “A miracle?” I repeated, struggling to process the reality of my situation. “How long have I been here?” “Just over two weeks,” he replied, glancing at the chart clipped to the end of my bed. “You sustained multiple injuries, but you’re healing well. However, you need to take it easy. Stress isn’t good for your recovery.” I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes. “I can’t believe I’m alive,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “I was so lost… so angry.” The doctor nodded, his expression softening. “It’s understandable, But dwelling on the past won’t help you heal. You need to focus on getting better.” I squeezed my eyes shut, the memories of Julian and Lauren crashing over me like a tidal wave. “I can’t stop thinking about them. They… they betrayed me…doctor, my best friend has been having an affair with my husband! The both of them set me up, they're getting married and having a child together!” “You’ll have time to figure all that out,” he said, his voice steady. “Right now, your focus should be on your health. You have a good support system, and there’s a good Samaritan who’s been paying for your hospital bills.” A flicker of curiosity replaced my despair. “A good Samaritan? Who?” “He’s been here almost every day,” the doctor explained. “I can send for him if you’d like to thank him personally.” “Yes, please,” I said, my heart racing. “I’d like to meet him.” The doctor nodded and moved toward the door. “I’ll be right back.” As he left, I lay back against the pillows, the pain radiating through my body a constant reminder of the fragility of life. I closed my eyes, trying to breathe through the discomfort. My mind drifted to the accident and the betrayal that had led me there. I remembered the laughter I had shared with Lauren, the plans for her wedding, the moment I saw Julian with her. The betrayal had cut so deep, and the pain felt like a living thing, gnawing at my insides. I couldn’t understand how everything could have unraveled so quickly. What had I done to deserve this? I thought Lauren was my only friend. Afterall she had been with me through all my struggles and good times. Now, I see why she was so persistent with me getting married to Julian. She said I'll miss my chance with a good man because all my past relationships failed. Lauren came around and ticked all the boxes and I thought he was doing me a favour by acting right. To think I sacrificed my family's love to face humiliation in the end. I gave up everything! All my inheritance gone just because of one man. He didn't even think to give me little money for my treatment, I had more than enough instead he looked me in the eye and called me good for nothing, he even called me barren. Just then, the doctor returned, followed by a tall figure shrouded in shadow. My heart raced as I strained to see who it was. “Madam, this is the man who helped you” the doctor said, stepping aside. As the figure stepped into the light, my breath caught in my throat. I recognized him instantly; my heart raced, and a chill ran down my spine. It was him. The man I had killed in self-defense two years ago.
