Chapter 5Friday Evening
Mrs. Schwartz said she did not like sleeping alone in her own house on weekends because the high school was right across the street on West Park Avenue. Jason wished he could afford to hire her full-time because he knew she was barely eking by on her Social Security and a small savings account. Her husband’s last illness wiped her out but she had refused to put him in a home.
He left the house at eight, for once not getting a fight from Kitty for one more television show. It was almost as if she detected how nervous he was feeling. She did ask if he was going to see Uncle Zach. Jason didn’t know that Zach had already progressed to uncle status. She’d known Reggie since she was born and he was still Reggie. Before now, uncle was reserved only for Bobby.
