Chapter 13 Ruth packed her bags with enough clothes to make it through the workweek. She sat on her bed and stared at the horrid floral suitcases her parents had given her one Christmas, early in her marriage. She hated being seen with it. And where was she supposed to go? She needed to be at work first thing Monday morning. It wasn’t as if she could flee to her sister’s hideaway. Even a hotel downtown would mean commuting practically to Scarborough. Could she stay with Doug, perhaps? No. Lawrence would think they were having an affair. Everybody would. And what about Agnes?
