Chapter 3

I knew I looked like death , when I was leaving for work there had been people leaving his house. I’d climbed into my car with an extra large flask of black coffee. Glaring at his house as I got the heaters going on the car windows to clear the fog. Then like magic I see the ass hat himself walk out onto the porch with two females under each arm. He was shirtless again and laughing at them as they probably cooed over his masculinity or some s**t. Me I wanted to cut it off his mini wiener , I was a girl who needed at least eight hours sleep a night to keep me at least sociable with society. People at the office today would give me a wide berth , one look they probably wouldn’t even ask for a coffee today. The only people that would have the balls would be the big wigs. They didn’t see past the end of there noses if it didn’t benefit them and there pockets. My darks eyes and pale complexion wouldn’t even begin to enter there orbit of giving a s**t , I wanted to be different though. If I ever made partner I promised I wouldn’t forget those that worked there asses off , I’d get my own damm coffee too. My eye must have been burning a hole in his head because he lifts his head up from the fan club he has and looks right at me through the clearing car windows. His face is void of any emotions but his eyes burn right back into me , the game I started of kill him with my eyes soon backfires I can’t stand his intensity. I found myself to be the one looking away from him, his gaze was like it penetrated your soul at times. Pissed off with myself for being the one to loose this round I do something petty. Pulling back off of my drive in reverse , I lift my middle finger and flag him off. I’d never be so rude to some one i hardly knew normally , but he deserved it. It was his fault I was so grumpy and bitchy , to my utter frustration he actually grins at me. His serious face turning into one that looked as if he enjoyed being on the receiving end of my rudeness and anger, as I turn and drive past his house I see him ushering the Barbie army away and he f*****g blows me a kiss. Growling out a huff I slam my foot a little too carelessly on the gas pedal . My car lurches forward spluttering trying speed , I was definitely driving too fast for the quiet street so I force myself to take a calming breath and drive like I wasn’t trying to win a race. The moment I walk into the office Diana makes a bee line for me “ did you move ? Are you loving it ?” She’s was always over excited. Usually I kept up with her over energetic self but today I felt dead on my feet. “ morning yes I moved and it’s amazing a lot of work to be done though”. Her pale eyes scan my face and her head tilts “ Is that why you look like poo , have you been doing all the house stuff yourself “ and that’s another thing. She had no sense of what was insulting or not in her head there was nothing wrong with that sentence. I’m surprised her mouth hasn’t had her in trouble yet but she was the niece of the owner of Bradson LAW and legal, I didn’t actually know what her job was here she sometimes did some paperwork but she mainly just floated around looking for gossip. “ yea maybe plus my neighbour threw a huge party last night , I think I’ve only had two hours sleep “ I couldn’t say anything over her remark after all she was telling the truth. I did look like s**t. She nods her head and follows me to the staff lockers where we kept our coats and bags. “Where have you moved to again ?” She asks her nose wrinkling in concentration. I’d told her maybe a hundred times already it obviously wasn’t important information to her , internally sighing , i stow my stuff away and then head to the coffee room. Flicking on all the machines to start heating up , getting cups ready for who I know will be the first ones in grabbing there much needed caffeine kicks. “ I’ve moved out of the city. It’s a little village called Haven only about a twenty five minute drive “. Her face scrunches up again as she c***s her hip against the counter. I was holding her attention a lot longer than normal this morning. She would normally have been telling me anything and everything about her , things I’d heard off of her a million times. “ Haven , I’ve heard of that town a friend said they lived there for a few month and left she said it was weird “ . That catches my attention from absently filling up the pastry dishes “ weird how ?” I ask her . She shrugs “ no idea she just said weird , like they didn’t belong very clicking . They didn’t like outsiders apparently so they sold up and moved , they’d only gone there for the cheap housing”, she reaches forward snatches a croissant and wanders out the break from obviously bored of the conversation already. The housing was cheap in Haven I couldn’t have got the house I did at the price I did anywhere else. I thought it was a steal due to it needing modernising I hope I don’t get run out I hadn’t ventured into the village centre yet , the usual caffeine hungry zombies start pilling in and I fill their cups and make there coffees exactly how they like. The grunt and nod there thanks , some actually smile and say thank you the more morning happy zombies . Frank walks in the nicest one here who was actually patient and kind enough to let me do some actual legal work for him. His eyes lingered too long on the occasion, one hard glance at his wedding ring from me though would have him clearing his throat and him continuing explaining the case he was currently working on. He’d listen to my suggestions and he would answer any questions I had . I wasn’t silly or oblivious enough to know why he did it , but I wasn’t that way inclined I wouldn’t help him cheat on his wife so I kept lines clear and never said anything he could take as me leading him on. “ good morning Chelsea , how did the house move go ?” He reaches for a pastry as I make his coffee. I smile at him “ really good thank you Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that though plenty to do “ I say sliding his drink to him. He leans against the counter and laughs before taking a sip of his drink. “ that’s true you was missed around here very grumpy people with no caffeine “ he laughs “ you said Haven didn’t you , where about ?” Had I told him where. I must have done I’d told that many I couldn’t remember, I must have for him to know . “It’s on green way drive , it’s really nice just needs lots of work “ he nods taking another sip. “ well if you ever need any help Chelsea just give me a nudge I can be handy with an hammer “ he winks at me and goes to stroll out the room. “ oh I could use some help on a case later , I’ve told everyone your mine at 1pm while 4pm they can get there own coffee “ he looks at me intense and it makes me uncomfortable but I nod smiling. “ yes excellent no worries see you then “ he grins and walks out and leaves. Frank was a good looking man , he was tall slicked back brown hair but he just didn’t make me feel comfortable in his presence sometimes he made me feel I don’t know just weird. But he was a senior and he could help me move up , get noticed by the partners he was married so I wasn’t too worried, well I tried to tell myself that but his suggestive looks told me the meatball band on his finger wouldn’t mean a thing. He seemed a man that liked possessions , outside of work I wouldn’t be anywhere near a man like him. But like I said he was probably my only way to make tracks here , I didn’t have shiny degrees and diplomas I needed experience and someone to back me . I wasn’t stand out enough for my face to fit either , but I would make it to the top one day . I had hope and more fire than any of these to succeed I had unknowing people needing me. People who didn’t even know they needed my help yet , the ones the firm turns away because they didn’t see there cases as money makers. The lost and the unfortunate, this was me getting the experience I needed. A few hours later I was in franks office feeling his eyes eat me alive , but I kept professional I never drew attention to the fact I knew he was undressing me with his eyes. The tiredness was taking over , I’d hit a wall of lack of sleep so I wasn’t exactly being a big help to him. But today he just had me filing , which was worse I had to bend and stretch his eyes on my every move. But when I would look at him he’d look away , his help on the case after filing was me scanning evidence and witness statements for any holes in there signed story’s. I always got too engrossed, the world around me slipping away when I read case files, like when I read books. I’d go into my own little bubble out of my own head and problems into another world where they didn’t exist. So I didn’t notice when he’d gotten too close his head literally appearing at the side of mine , he made me nearly jump out of my skin when I felt his breath on my neck. “ find anything ?” He asks, I quickly move away and stand up too quick for him not realise I was basically running from him . “ ermm not yet if it’s ok with you could I take it home , i believe I could really find things to help you in here “ he looked f*****g pleased with himself , my discomfort pleased him. He grins standing up and straightening his tie “ sure it’s home time anyways , we was making such a good team I didn’t realise it was almost 5pm “. Snapping my head to the clock I see I’m due to leave in five minutes that’s if everyone else decided to leave at 5pm today , how long had I been engrossed reading this file. “ I expect some results from you tomorrow though Chelsea now go ahead go home run yourself a nice bath and relax you look tired, I’ll tell the others I gave you permission to leave early “ .nodding my head and thanking him, again him acting like I was his allowing me to leave like a possession. I quickly leave the office grab my things and leave the building getting into my car never look a gift horse in the mouth . My mind was wandering over the case all the way home “ a man accused of murder , with no solid evidence but a key witness. I had to compare statements and find holes , hopefully pull the key witnesses statements apart , the man accused was our client the murdered his brothers wife , the key witness his brother. When I pull up into my drive , I sluggishly get out the car and almost drop everything when a smoky smooth voice sounds behind me. “ have you had a good day Chelsea ?” I fly around to see Adam leaning against the back of my car. His hair loose and hung around his shoulders looking as fresh as a daisy and he actually had a black T-shirt on so he does own them . Why was I bloody taking note of whether he was wearing a shirt or not . “ I’m tired thank you for asking “ I snap slamming my door. Turning my back I juggle my bag and the files up the steps to the porch. I hear a bang and look to see he’s jumped the porch rails and landed right at the side of me near my front door “ well you should sleep on a night “ . I look back to see the height he’s just jumped “ what was wrong with using the steps , and I would sleep if my neighbour was a little more quiet come a late hour “. Wow I was on form and rude today but it’s his fault I was tired and he was the reason that’s all my anger knew. Not that he was a stranger nope f**k that he was the ass who’d kept us awake. He f*****g laughs and rubs his neck “ you could have come around if you’d liked “ no apology nothing. Rolling my eyes I turn my back on him , “ wait Chelsea look at me “ he says. I fly around again about to tell him to f**k off when his hands land on my cheeks keeping me in place , his eyes boring into mine they flick from one side to the other , he goes from playful to angry in a heart beat . The change in the atmosphere mind spinning , he abruptly steps back shoving his hands into his pockets. He looks down at his feet and snaps to the floor like it’s insulted him “ I’ll be quiet tonight get some sleep “ he says and storms off of my porch down the path and up his own path. I don’t look away until he slams his own door , weird I think to myself and open my door and walking in. A bath some food and a glass of wine whilst laid on my bed reading the case file feels like heaven. I jot down notes and observations on the files I have wearing nothing but my robe after my bath , it’s how I fall asleep amongst it all piled around me . When I wake up in the middle of the night the glass and all the paper work is neatly piled on my night stand the quilt tucked around my mostly naked body . When had I done that I think sleepily , shrugging sleep pulling me back under like an anchor I switch off of my light and snuggle back in the night blissfully silent.
