Chapter 5: UNDERSTANDING THE CON (3)
“I’m not protecting him…” Amanda said as a retort to the man’s words.
“Then you don’t mind if I take him?” Mason formed it as a question but at the same time it sounded more like a statement.
“Do whatever you’d like.” Amanda said in an indifferent tone, trying to hide her obvious displeasure.
“Glad to hear it~” Mason instantly changed his attitude and cheerfully spoke as he stood up from his chair. “Then I’ll go play~ I already told him to meet me later today. Gotta prepare~ See ya!”
The way he left the bar in a good mood was a complete contrast to the woman that was left behind in a bad one.
“You think you can take away my toy?” Amanda quietly muttered to herself in the empty bar.
Taking out her phone from behind the counter she dialed a number. After several rings the person she was calling finally picked up.
“Hello! Where are you? Do you want to meet?” Amanda asked in a cheerful tone. The other end of the line was silent for a bit.
“…Um… Amanda?” Surprised at the sudden call Albert wanted to confirm if this indeed was the woman that conned him twice already.
“Hahaha~! Yes it’s me! Did you forget me already?” She jokingly asked knowing it wasn’t that simple for someone as hooked as Albert was to forget about her.
“That wouldn’t be too far off the mark… The truth is I decided to go see you anymore.” Albert said in a serious tone.
“What?” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. How could a man that was so obsessed with her until a day ago, suddenly not want her anymore? Amanda couldn’t comprehend the situation.
“I realized that it wasn’t worth putting so much at stake here. I’m the only one with something to lose, so I’d rather not. I have a lot of responsibilities on my shoulders and a lot of people’s livelihoods depend on me.” Albert sounded completely serious on the other end of the line; it came as a huge surprise to the woman listening.
“Didn’t you say you didn’t care about being conned?” Amanda questioned while thinking back on the man’s words.
“I did, but I can’t be impulsive like that. As a CEO I have too must responsibility to bear. I’m sorry but I have a lot of work to do in the office, so goodbye.” Albert said and ended the call afterwards.
“Wait-” Amanda tried to put another word in but the call was already ended, she angrily threw her phone on the ground in disbelief.
“I can’t stand this...” she quietly muttered to herself.
“Let’s see if that’s really true…” Amanda said out loud and left the bar heading somewhere.

Meanwhile CEO’s office…
It was very late at night but Albert was still in his office working. He didn’t even have that much to do but he was still there.
“I wonder if this is really going to work…” He was impatient while sitting on his desk he began remembering the conversation he had with Mason…
Mason: “I want you to pretend like you are giving up on her.”
Albert: “What?”
Mason: “You want to know if you are different than her other prey right?”
Albert: “Yes but how is that going to prove anything?”
Mason: “It will do a lot. If she sees you slipping away while thinking she’s got you hooked, she might act.”
Albert: “…and if she doesn’t?”
Mason: “It will prove you don’t mean anything to her.”
Albert: “I’ll do it.”
Mason: “What a brave fellow! I thought you’d be more analytical.”
Albert: “I guess I somehow lose my cool when it comes to her.”
Mason: “That’s a very bad quality to have…”
Albert: “Might be so…”
Mason: “Alright I will kindly lend my assistance to you then.”
Albert: “You’re a very odd man to be helping me with nothing in it for you.”
Mason: “That’s not entirely true…”
Albert: “Is that so…?”
Mason: “Yes~ I get to see Amanda’s expression~ That’s enough for me. She’s really cute, like a pouty child!”
Albert: “I thought I shouldn’t make her angry.”
Mason: “Oh she won’t get mad over something like this~ She’s quite more patient than most people… but when she goes off the entire city will be in danger…”
Albert: “I still hope to never anger her…”
Mason: “Haha! Such a great guy~”
Albert: “It’s the first time anyone’s said that to me.”
Mason: “It’s because you’re an indifferent robot~”
Albert: “I guess I am…”
Mason: “You even admit to it! Such an honest man! I can see why she treats you special!”
Albert: “She does?”
Mason: “Yes, that’s why I took interest in you in the first place…”
Albert: “How am I special?”
Mason: “She met with you again.”
Albert: “I think it’s because she knew she could take more.”
Mason: “That’s not it. She usually never meets the same person twice much less sleep with him.”
Albert: “Is that why you said I shouldn’t have?”
Mason: “I didn’t want to believe it but she might see something in you. I hoped you wouldn’t be involved in our world.”
Albert: “Involved?”
Mason: “If you become special to her a lot of people will want to hunt you down and use you against her. In our line of business having someone ‘special’ is a weakness…”
Albert: “I’m ready to take that risk.”
Mason: “Damn you’re so hooked…”
Albert: “Is it bad?”
Mason: “I’d say you’re crazy… You realize she’s mixed in with the wrong people right?”
Albert: “I’ll take her away if need be.”
Mason: “You will?!”
Albert: “Yes.”
Mason: “You sure are a crazy one… but I like you…”
Albert: “… was that a compliment or an insult?”
Mason: “A bit of both!”
Albert: “…”
Mason: “Well I guess all that’s left now is for us to just wait and see how she will act.”

“It seems like such a farfetched plan now that I think about it…” What stressed out Albert most was the thought that Amanda wouldn’t act at all. That would prove that in her eyes he is no different than any other prey she’s had before.
