I had to take a long, deep breath. But I knew what to say to Father as soon as I was able to get the air to do it.
“I haven’t given up. I’m still hunting for you and I will find you. And when I find you, I’ll kill you.”
“That is the problem, isn’t it? You cannot find me. You have no idea where I am, or even who I am.”
“I’m making progress.”
“Do you really think so? To tell you the truth, I am not really sure what you have against me.”
“Mike Croop. Jackie Cole.”
“And your unfortunate transfer to Hennington, Minnesota? That isn’t good for your career, I can see that much. But it’s hardly worth killing over. If it’s all about Jackie, I’m afraid you’re giving her too much credit.”
“You made her what she is. You and Mother created her.”
“I think you’ve had too much to drink,
