I had never believed in things like fate and karma, but this was the point where I started to feel like I was doomed. I didn’t know what I had done, what god or saint I had offended, but somehow the universe had decided to crush me under its weight.
I had trusted and believed in Jackie Cole – or maybe I had never exactly believed in her, but I had decided to trust her anyway and that amounts to the same thing. I risked everything in my life for her and all her stories about running away together, and all of it was based on this sad little memory of her as the woman I had loved when we were homeless street kids. It was all a lie, even my memories of what I thought had happened, every last bit of it was just a lie.
