Chapter 15: Can’t Sleep
Later in the evening, when TV is finally off and my parents have retreated to the bedroom I usually share with Dan, my lover and I are pressed together in the tight confines of a full-size futon I could’ve sworn once slept us both comfortably. But either we’ve spread more in our middle age than we care to admit—me probably more than Dan, the military keeps him fit—or the damn thing shrank with time, or we’ve just grown too used to sleeping double in a queen, I don’t know. Whatever the reason, he has to lay on his side while I sit back against my pillow, knees up, iPad propped on my legs. Despite the hour, I want to check out all the things my mother and I talked about earlier.
“DC has a five day waiting period,” I say, half to myself.
