prologue: caves are good
Life has its ups and downs. Right now Sophia's life is going downhill. It's been ten years since her parents were murdered and ten years since she and her brother managed to get away from the witches. When we were all young, we thought that we would grow up with our parents, tease and play with our siblings, heck even make friends we want to stay together forever!
That's at least how Sophia thought life would be for her. But that was taken from her like taking candy from a baby. So quickly and she couldn't do anything about it.
She did learn though that not everything in life is normal. Her brother is a warlock. He can do magic, something that she loves. She loves watching him consecrate on making a fire out of leaves and wood without moving his hands. She loves being a warlock.
But she is human.
She took after her mother, who was mortal like her. Her mother fell in love with her dad, although they knew that his kind -the other warlocks- wouldn't like the idea of a mortal girl and one of their strongest warlocks getting married.
But love overpowers everything or at least that's what they thought.
Every creature out there has its own perspective. Some might think kindness overpowers everything, others believe that being a good leader is the key and other -the cruellest people on earth, actually- believe that power and strength overpower love and kindness.
Sophia and Marcus Grace have been travelling from pack to pack, trying to stay alive. Every Alpha treated them with kindness, especially Alpha Matthew -Alpha of the Red Moon Pack- because their mother was a member of his pack.
Today, they left his pack and went to the woods, trying to find the same place to live for a week, at least. Her older by one and a half year brother, Marcus was carrying most of their stuff -which weren't many- while she was carrying a bag or two. It was noon when they started walking to the woods and now it's somewhere between night and afternoon. Probably six or seven o'clock.
Sophia and Marcus placed down their stuff when they saw a lake not far away. They walked towards the lake, happy for finding water. They silently drank as much water as they wanted before they continued their journey to the unknown.
"How much longer?" her voice was quiet as always as she was still scared of being heard and located by the warlocks or even an animal, like a mountain lion. Marcus sighed and stopped walking. He turned to his younger sibling and smiled sadly. "Just a little more, Soph. Just a little more". They continued walking around the lake, trying to find a place to stay for the night near the water.
"There," Marcus stated and pointed towards a cave, a few meters away from the lake. Sophia's eyes widen when she saw how dark the cave was as she was afraid of the dark. "Do we have to go there? You know how much I hate the dark"
Her voice was even quieter now, she was scared. Marcus stopped dead in his tracks and looked over to his sister "Soph, it's either that or sleep somewhere in the middle of the woods. And you know how dangerous that is after last time. Don't worry! I am here and not going anywhere. I'll even light a fire. Okay?" he smiled when he saw her nod.
"Come on"
They put their stuff in the corner of the room near the exit in case anything happens, they would just grab them and run. Marcus did as he promised and lit a fire with some wood and leaves he found. Sophia laughed in delight when she saw him perform magic.
A yawn left her mouth as she cuddled to her brother's side. Marcus smiled at his sister, his warm chocolate eyes sparkling because of the fire. "Are you okay? Are you comfortable?"
"Caves are good. Night Marcus" she yawned, again. She cuddled even closer for warmth and he put his arms around her not before placing a blanket on them.
"Sweet dreams Sophie"
