The Turning Point

Harvey bit his lower lip as he scrunched his nose. He was still behind that thick utility post, contemplating his life decisions on whether to go out of there and do some heroic stunts that he didn’t know whether to be very effective or would only be a straight easy way to heaven as soon as he revealed himself. He knew for sure that it was the latter one. “Help! Dad!” He heard the woman in a high-pitched voice yell and scream at the top of her lungs as she struggled her way out of the men’s hold on her arms. “Let go of me, you buffoons! I can see your faces! I will report you to the police! My daddy is the Vice President!” Harvey poked out his head again upon hearing that. Earlier, he watched as the car was stopped by the men abruptly when they had just surrounded the car and darted their guns at it. He almost screamed when he thought they were going to shoot and fill it with holes, but it turned out that they were just scaring off the driver. He also thought that the driver was a man, and he could defend himself, but he heard an ear-piercing scream, and a beautiful, elegant woman was dragged out of the car without anyone else. The woman was beautiful, she looked elegant and she was obviously rich. She was wearing heels and her face was covered with makeup. He guessed she was headed somewhere to have fun. She couldn’t do anything but just scream desperately, she could not do anything but scare them verbally and flail her weak arms and throw futile smashes on their bodies and faces. She kept on talking, and if there would be any harm that she could do, that would be deafening through her loud voice. He saw how the men got annoyed by her movements and continuous squirms. He heard her grunt and saw how one man punched her on her abdomen to shut her up. The woman cried out in pain, and Harvey grimaced because these men had no heart for hurting women. He really hated seeing women, children, and old people getting hurt by others intentionally. It was just making him furious. He remembered there was one time back in the orphanage when a couple was returning to his friend and she came to him crying with obvious bruises on her body. He didn’t think twice about jumping on them and giving them both relatively huge bruises on their faces. He didn’t care if it meant that he had to clean the dirty bathroom for the whole month, that friend was not deserving of their mistreatment. They could not sue him. After all, he would end up in the same orphanage if ever. “Argh! Let go of me! You filthy-handed people, don’t ruin my dress!” Harvey clicked his tongue and scoffed at how strong this woman actually was. She was still thinking of her luxurious dress, and even insulting those men who had basically told her not to move or they would kill her. Now, instead of just jumping out to them like what he was supposed to do earlier, he was contemplating whether to save her or not. But when he saw that these men were already getting angry and one man was already preparing his gun to shoot, he came out of the place with shivering knees. Well, here goes nothing. “H-hey…” he cleared his throat and tried again with a stronger voice because he was not heard and he looked so weak, so he tried again. “Hey, you fools! What are you doing!?” The men stopped dragging the noisy woman to their van and looked at him. They were all looking at him with confusion, even the woman who now had a creased forehead and a disappointed face, as if she was not happy that there was even someone who had come to her rescue, or from how she sighed, she was disappointed that of all the people around the area, why was it a beggar that was given to her, she might probably expecting someone either guards or other elite people who could phone the police. Harvey could only shake his head, this girl had better thank him for showing up and not letting her be taken by those men. When he thought they were going to at least shoot their guns at him, he was wrong when they just looked at him like he was the most disgusting thing there was and just continued dragging the woman, while the daughter of the Vice President just continued on shouting and screaming for help. Harvey felt insulted. What did they think of him, a loser? He had killed a few men back when he was underaged when he was still part of the gangsters without using his own hands. He was strategizing, the other members called him smart, but he was also strong physically. “Help! Call the police! Daddy!” The woman continued to shout while still trying to refuse to get inside their vans. Her voice was actually impressively loud and Harvey was wondering how come there was still no one from the elite subdivision coming out for her rescue when she was, as she said, the daughter of the Vice President? How come she was allowed to go out alone without any bodyguards? Nonetheless, Harvey started running. He couldn’t just stand there, he had to at least try to save the woman. Who knows? He might have been given a supply of food if everyone knew that he had actually saved the daughter of the second most powerful person in the country. But as of the moment, he had to make sure that he would really be able to save her. “I said, let go of her!” He took one man by the shoulder and punched him straight in the face, causing him to fall straight down to the ground, unconscious. The others were shocked, but they immediately got themselves together and went back to him. They were not that strong, as long as they were not using their guns, Harvey could take them all down. He was refraining the other men from walking toward the driver’s side as he was trying to reach the woman. But what confused him was when he was about to reach her to at least put her behind him for more safety, she veered her arm away from him and there was an obvious disgust on her face. Harvey was so surprised at what happened that he didn’t see a punch coming which made him fall and roll on the ground. He shook his head and dodged another coming kick. He frowned when he was hit on his shoulder, but he managed to stand back up and gave his all to take down all these men. Most of them were already rolling on the floor in pain, but there were still more who were ganging upon him. Luckily, before they could even use their guns, he heard a shout from behind and a group of bodyguards came out from the elite subdivision gate and started running toward them. The men immediately scurried away, clambering into the car, and leaving the scene as the men took a picture of their vans and called for more backup to trace the attack. How could they just show themselves when it was already late and he was already almost able to win against them? Harvey groaned as he held his jaw and lip. He could feel it stinging. They were able to punch him in the face and make his lip busted. But he endured it as he walked toward the girl who was currently slumping on the ground and crying, her dress was wrinkled, and her makeup was already ruined, she was covering her face, and she looked small. She was just very strong earlier. What happened now that the men were already gone? When Harvey first saw her being taken out of the place, he admired how beautiful she was. He was momentarily in awe of how elegant she looked with her flowy, mid-thigh red dress, her face was colored, and her brown, curled hair cascaded down her back. She was also wearing high heels, which made it harder for her to complain and stop being dragged. He was like a model. Maybe she was? And she looked angelic sent down from heaven even from afar. But now that he was standing in front of him, she even smelled so good. She was sobbing and she looked soft and vulnerable, completely different from the bravery of screaming and yelling for help she had shown earlier. He was enthralled and panicked inside that he didn’t know what to do with her. Should he approach her? Ask her how she was? Of course, she was not alright. He looked at the others who came to their rescue, waiting for them to ask the woman so he would not do so. But they were just standing there, surrounding them and they were actually waiting for him to do something. They looked careful, or even scared, and he had no idea why. No one was warning him why, and he was now unsure if he wanted to approach her. She was still seated on the ground, but just squatting, with her feet planted on the ground, which might be a little uncomfortable because of her skin, where her skin would not be on the ground. She was also slightly sobbing, a little too loud for his liking. But there was a softness that touched his heart, so he decided to talk. “Are you okay, miss?” he asked softly, a little nervous and uncertain. He looked around to see the others, but they were just the same, intrigued by how he was talking to the woman. They seemed to know something that he didn’t, but he didn't mind it. He crouched in front of her and spoke again, “Miss, you should stand up and go home. They are gone.” Once again, the woman didn’t listen to him, but she raised her head. He saw the surprise on her face, then it immediately switched to disgust upon seeing his face. Her tear-stricken face changed into a scrunch as she stood up abruptly and stepped back, but she almost fell back, causing Harvey’s instinct to move as he held his hand to keep her right back up to refrain her from falling back painfully on her bottom. Luckily, he got hold of her one smooth arm and steadied her back, but with all that he had done for her, all the sacrifices that he made and even risked his life just to save her, what she did was the last thing that he had ever thought of. Slap! “Oh my god, Alyanna!” Harvey felt the stinging pain on his cheek as his head turned to the side and remained there in shock. The utter disbelief and the series of gasps were heard from the area, there were more who came and called the woman in front of her. He lifted his gaze to the woman who had just slapped him after he saved her life. His jaw tightened, but his gaze became stinky upon realizing that this woman in front of him just had the audacity to look at him with disgust and contempt, as if he had done something terrible. “Why did you do that?” he asked with his forehead creased, his voice was low, he was pissed. He was starting to think that saving this woman was not worth it. He should just have watched and come out as a witness if he only knew that this would only be the thing that he would receive. He couldn’t believe that he had just been slapped after receiving the blow that was for her. He wanted to shout in her face, if not only at the people who were already standing around, most especially the Vice President. The woman looked at her with a disgusted look. “Don’t lay your filthy hands on me again.”
