Chapter 2: The Shift

Nxy’s POV
It was finally the night before my birthday and guess what we were doing? Not a d**n thing!
Deena talked so much like she was the one who was going to be throwing me a party this whole time. all I could do was shake my head.
Well. I guess I didn’t want anything big anyway. Like I said, I don’t have many friends.
I wanted to look my best and get some pictures for my i********: page. I called Deena over so we could have a mini celebration.
She snuck some drinks in and we decided to party in my room. It wasn’t big, but it wasn’t small either. It was pretty decent. Big bed, full bathroom with walk in shower and garden tub. To top it off, the walk in closet was huge even though I barely even filled a quarter of it.
I decided to put on this emerald green sweetheart neckline bodycon mermaid style midi dress. It hugged my curves in all the right places. I styled my natural hair into an up do so my dress can properly compliment my neckline. I put the cherry on top with a bit of body shimmer to add some shine. It smelled like shortbread cookies.
“Da**n girl. I’ll date you myself if you don’t find a date” Deena said making me blush. Stand over here near the window.
“Okay. Right here?” I scooted over.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door.
“Ms. Nyx. Alpha Matteo and Luna Alessia would like you to come to the main hall.” Paulina called
Ugh. What could they want? It’s about to be my birthday. I just want some pictures to post and get ready for my first shift.
“Okay. Thanks Paulina.” I sighed. Wait here Deena.
I left out the room to head to the main hall. When I got there the Alpha, Luna and their son Santino were there sitting on one of the few sofas they had in there.
“Well. You look beautiful Nyx. You definitely look like you’re 18.” Luna Alessia complimented me
“Thank you Luna.” I smiled
Alpha Matteo couldn’t stop staring in disbelief. He had never seen me like that. It was like his long lost daughter was growing up or something. Luna nudged him.
“Doesn’t she Matteo?”
“Yes. Yes. You look great Nyx.” Alpha stumbled on words.
I was waiting for Santino to say something but he just kept looking at me all weird. It wasn’t a “you look good” look. It was more of a “you THINK you look good” look.
“Anyways. We wanted to give you a gift for your 18th birthday. This year you may find your mate and move out so we wanted to give you what we think will be your last gift from us. You’ve served us well and we want to thank you by giving you this” Alpha Matteo stated
Luna Alessia pull out a small box purple box with a red bow on it.
I took it into my hands and opened it up. It was a car key. They bought me a car!
“You all bought me a car?!” I screamed. I immediately returned to my composed state. Keeping in mind I’m in the presence of the Alpha and his family.
“I am so grateful. I really am. You really shouldn’t have. I don’t think I deserve this.” I said nervously
“Yeah. You think?” Santino said under his breath.
I ignored his smart comment and went to hug the Alpha and Luna.
“Give Nyx a hug Santino.” Luna instructed
He looked at her like she was joking, but she wasn’t. It’s not like I wanted to hug him either.
He came over to me and quickly bent down a little since he was taller than me and put his arms around my waist and his head on my shoulder. He pulled me in tight. A tingle went down my spine. This man’s grip was deliciously dangerous.
“There. Happy birthday” he said and walked off to Goddess knows where.
Suddenly the alarm on my phone went off. It was 11:55pm and it was almost time for me to shift. I forgot Deena was up in my room waiting for me.
“Luna Alessia. Please can you have someone let Deena out. I’m about to shift. I need to head to the woods.” I asked kindly.
“Of course. Go on! Hurry” she yelled as I ran out the front door to the west woods.
I found a spot I could undress myself. Somewhere no one could see me. So I thought.
The moon was bright in the night sky. The wind gusting against my skin, letting my scent dance in the wind. I let me hair down and let it breath.
Then came the “fun” part. My bones became to break and my fur began to emerge above my skin. My beautiful dark sandy brown coat shimmered in the moonlight.
I felt alive. I started running and running nonstop as I embraced my wolf. She was happy to finally be set free to roam! It felt like an hour had passed by. I didn’t know I could run that long.
I came back to the spot where I left my dress and other belongings. As I shifted back, I caught the scent of I think.. another wolf. It was strong. It smelled like freshly cut grass with a hit of citrus and vanilla. I looked to where it was coming from and I could see two shining eyes in the dark.
I quickly covered myself with my dress as they disappeared in the dark.
Who the hell is that?!
I quickly put my dress on and headed back to the pack house.
As I entered the front door I was greeted by Santino. He looked down at me with a certain look. A different look. It could burn holes in my skin.
“How was your first shift?” He asked
“Umm. It was good.” I awkwardly said.
As I walked upstairs to my room I could tell he was staring at me, but when I turned around he wasn’t there. That scent. That scent seemed to follow me here to the pack house. It was trying. I don’t know what it is.
I sent Deena a text telling her how it all went. I didn’t even get to see my new car. Everything happened so fast.
I need to get some sleep. It’s the day before graduation and I want to be ready for my big day.
I went ahead and showered, got in the bed and knocked out. I was so tired. Did I even get any pics for my i********:? I’ll check in the morning.
