Chapter 2

"So how's the audition?" Ana said the moment I pressed the accept button on my cellphone. "I hope you got the main lead, dear." "Well the producer said I have a bigger chance—" "Really? Oh my, Jas, we should celebrate." Excitement were so evident in her voice. "Stay there. I am going to fetch you. We're going to the bar tonight." "Wait, Ana. Let's not jump into conclusion, okay? There is a problem." I put my bag on the sink while talking to my manager. Thank God I am the only one here at the ladies room. No one could hear what I was going to tell Ana. "Problem? What problem?" "The producer already approved of me as a main lead but Mr. Jake—" "Jake? Brent's bestfriend?" I wiped my tears. Until now I was still crying not because of the outcome of the said audition, but because of what happened six years ago. Six years of trying to forget someone but to no avail. Everyday I was hoping that the past would just stay in the past but I was wrong. Until this day those memories are still haunting me. Memories of Jake and I. "Don't tell me he tried to embarrass you in front of so many people? I won't forgive him." "No, Ana. That wasn't the case." "Then why are you crying?" "Ahm, it was because of what you said to me a few days ago." I lied because I don't want her to know that Jake and I were ex-lovers. "That you would give up on me if I failed this time. Ana, I want you to know that I tried everything I could to aced this audition. It's just that there are five judges who would decide for the main role and it seems that Mr. Jake wouldn't approve of me." "Jake is very strict, Jas. I know that sh*t!" "He is your friend?" I want to know what happened to Jake after I left him. "For the love of god, Jasmine! I can't stand his attitude so why would I befriend him? I had talked to him once. Aside from that I never gave myself a chance to be around him. He is so moody, rude , and so full of himself. I wonder why Brent remain his friend all this time. He is totally Brent's opposite." "Ah, I see." "I know all the five judges, Jas, so you don't have to worry. The moment Brent vote yes to you, all of the three judges would soon follow. Meaning, it would be Jake against those four." Ana let out a loud laugh. "I can't believe it, Ana." I smiled while wiping my tears. "Brent is the producer of the said film. He has the final say when it comes to actors who will portray." "I wonder why did they invite Jake to be one of the judges when they would just set aside his opinion." "I don't know, Jas. All I know is that Jake is Brent's bestfriend. Who knows? Maybe Jake is one of his investors. I heard he is filthy rich. Or maybe Brent is just using this audition so he could pick a girl to be Jake's girlfriend." "What?" I can't believe what I heard. So until now Jake is still a womanizer. "Brent once said that Jake is very elusive when it comes to dating let alone having a girlfriend. He is very picky. D*mn that man! Anyway, I have already said too much. Perhaps I should try to zip my mouth next time." Again she let out a loud laugh. "Just don't tell anyone what I told you about that d*mn Jake the sh*t!" "Oh, it's nothing, Ana. I won't tell a soul." "So, Jas, I'll be there in a few minutes. Let's celebrate tonight." "Can we move the celebration next week? Or at least after the result has been released? I am broke right now, Ana. I sent money to my sister yesterday for my mom's medication." My mom is the reason why I really want to get into the showbiz industry. If I got the role, my mom's medical bills won't be a problem anymore. I'll have money to pay for it plus I can pay my college tuition fee on time. "It's my treat, Jas, so don't worry." She ended the call. I put my cellphone back inside my bag. I heaved a deep sigh the moment I have seen my reflection in the mirror. My eyes are swollen in just an hour of crying. I washed my face immediately and apply makeup to conceal my puffy eyes. Ana will be here in a few minutes and definitely she's going to scold me seeing me like this. She always reminds me that being an actor I should be presentable at all times. That I should learn the art of being always cheerful especially when I am in a public place. I'm almost done applying makeup when I heard the door open. I thought it was just a random lady wanting to use the toilet but then I heard footsteps approaching towards where I am standing. It totally stopped just a step behind me. My heart suddenly skipped a beat when I saw the reflection of a man in the mirror. He took a step beside me and put his hands on the edge of the sink. He just stared at me, hatred was so evident in his eyes. "J-Jake?" That was what came out of my mouth. "I...am—" "Sorry?" He gritted his teeth. "Are you running out of money so you decided to see me after hiding for so many years?" "J-Jake, it's not what you think it is," I said in a trembling voice. "In the first place I didn't know you were here, that you are one of the judges. If I—" He cut me off. "Do you think I would believe you, Jasmine?" he shouted at me. "Liar! You want me back because that b*stard abandoned you, right?" "I-I don't know what you are talking about." His lips suddenly curve in a sarcastic manner. "You are really good at pretending, Jasmine, but you can't fool me again!"
