Chapter Five

Holy s**t balls! What a crazy night! It went from zero to one hundred within seconds. I couldn’t imagine if Joel could get me that turned on that easily, what could he do with me actually in bed with him? I know that the last thing a girl like me should be dreaming about is having s*x all the time. That whole cliché that men are always the horn dogs is completely inaccurate. I wanted it probably just as much as any male within the world’s population, if not more.             I was out having lunch with Gavin and Mia, spacing out as I remembered last night. Mia would go crazy when she learned what happened, which is why I debated on even telling her. Yes, Mia was my best friend, but she was also Joel’s old fantasy. I needed to remember that for the next time I hung out with Joel, that was if I decided to hang out with him again. Oh, who was I kidding? I wanted him more than I’ve ever wanted him before.             “So?’ Mia dragged out. “How did your date with Joel go last night?”             “How?” I started knowing damn well what my answer was. “Of course, Joel told Cole, and Cole told you. How convenient.”             Mia smacked her lips at me while also scrunching her nose. I should be in the best damn mood I’ve been in months, but I wasn’t. I needed more, so much more. “Listen, you don’t have to tell us all the details, just small minor ones.”             “Yeah,” Gavin pitched in. “Like was he as good as he was the first time you two had hot sloppy drunk s*x?”             I’m glad that Gavin was back to being his silly old self with me and that I could relax a little bit more around him because of it. “We didn’t have sex.”             Gavin put his hands on his hips, bobbed his head, and gave me a ‘yeah right’ look. “Seriously? You mean to tell us that Joel worked his hot little ass off to get you on a date finally, and you didn’t even give it up to him?”             Mia smacked Gavin playfully in the head. “Don’t listen to him, Eve. You don’t have to tell us anything that you don’t want to. Gavin will get over himself as soon as the next hot guy walks by holding another tray of food.”             “That is very true,” Gavin admitted. “Damn, Mia, it’s like you know me so well. It’s scary.”             I would do or say just about anything to move on from this topic of conversation. Suddenly I remembered Gavin’s date night with the new potential producer last night and saw my exit plan. “How did your diner go last night, Gavin? Did you land any more big leads?”             He shrugged like he was disappointed. “The diner went okay, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around the plot. It was boring, and anytime I would mention it to the producer, he would shut me down like my opinion didn’t matter. I doubt that I will be getting a call back from that guy anytime soon.”             “Good,” I said, taking a bite out of my French fry. “If they can’t see how great you are, then f**k them. You deserve to have your own damn reality television show anyway.”             Gavin gasped, standing to his feet, making his chair whisk out from behind him, nearly knocking over a waitress passing by. “Eve, you a flipping genius! That’s what I will do! I will host my own reality show.”             Wow. It was amazing to me that Gavin couldn’t take a damn joke every once in a while, though I had to admit that if anyone had the ability to pull it off, it would be him. Mia cheered him on, clapping her hands as he danced around the table. How in the hell was I friends with these people? I hid my face as best as I could, trying to save myself as much embarrassment as possible, which was hard as hell to do when you were friends with these two whack jobs.             “How about a boys and girls dating thing? It’s LA! Everyone here is always looking for a matchup. Your pretty good at those,” Mia encouraged him on. “I know there has to be a million other people trying to make a reality dating show, but no one can do it quite like you can, Gavin. Show them how independent you are! Forget all those producer assholes that held you back!”             My head twisted sideways as Mia threw her fists in the air like a madwoman, but I was totally digging this newfound Mia. She was different, adventurous, and fun as hell. “Where has that girl been hiding inside of you all this time? Don’t tell me that is the Mia that Cole gets in the bedroom because if it is, no wonder why you two get along so well,” I chuckled.             Mia stuck her tongue out at me. “I would have you know that I am a lot of fun. Maybe not right now with me being all pregnant, but I was a lot of fun.”             “All pregnant?” I asked. “Mia, you only just found out your pregnant. Remember that you get a lot bigger from here and about nearly lose your mind in the process, but when it's all done, you have a tiny little human to take care of.”             “Yeah, a tiny little human that does nothing but eats, sleeps and shits,” Gavin said, making me bust out laughing with him.             “Stop it, you guys!” Mia said while clutching onto her belly, which hadn’t even begun to show. “The little one might hear you.”             I know one thing that messing with Mia throughout her pregnancy would be a hell of a good time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------             The hot water burned my body, making all the tense muscles in my body shake. After last night, I have been on edge when I should have been calmer. Hearing Eve lose it with me on the phone only added to my tenseness and aggravation. I’m not sure that I would survive this. By the end of it all, Eve might rip my heart out and stomp all over it, and there wouldn’t be a damn thing that I could do about it.             When I got out of the shower, all the guys were ready and waiting on me in the living room. Soren, Maverick, Ace, and I all got our own place down here in LA. Cole couldn’t stand the thought of being away from his boys and being left with just Mia here. He knew for those days that she was busy that he would need his boys to help keep him company. I’m not sure why Cole even insisted on still hanging out with these idiots. All they wanted to do was find their next s*x partner. I found it kind of pathetic, seeing as how they knew Cole had settled down. They didn’t once ever take that into consideration. These guys were my family, but that didn’t mean that they weren’t a bunch of greedy bitches.             “Well, it’s about time that you got out of the shower. Was jerking off to Eve not enough for you last night?”             “Just the hell up, Soren.” I threw the towel that I was using to dry off my hair right into his face.             Cole smiled at me when I entered the room. It was our secret smile, the smile that told me he was happy for me but was warning me to be careful. He knew that I didn’t want him to say too much in front of the guys, though I’m pretty sure they heard enough of it last night.             “When are you going to see her again?” Maverick asked, popping something into his mouth. I’ve never seen one guy eat so much at a time and still stay so fit.             Ace and Soren started making kissing noises while rubbing their arms and sighing. I rolled my eyes at their immaturity. You would think they would have grown half a brain and grew up even just a little, but nope, not one bit.             “Give it a rest. Nothing happened.”             Soren started chuckling, nearly spitting out his beer. “Right. So those moans we heard coming from your room last night was just in our imagination. Don’t be ashamed of it, dude. We all have to play with ourselves every once in a while.”             “Speak for yourself,” Maverick commented, slapping Soren on the back.             I walked out onto our balcony to try and get away from them before I snapped. It didn’t sit right with me hearing them act like I was just some horny teenager looking for my next fill. Eve wasn’t like that to me. She was…. I don’t know. More. It didn’t make any sense saying it, even in my head, but that was all I had. There was like this invisible connection between us that only she and I could see. Well, it seems like right now, the only one who could see it was me. Eve seemed like she was just looking for her next hookup, which is why I refused to sleep with her right now. I might have gone a little far last night with her, much farther than I wanted to, but s**t happens. I’m not going to say that I regret it because I don’t. Listening to her get off to my voice, my moans was the most thrilling thing I’ve ever experienced. I wouldn’t mind doing it again with her, but I had to be careful if I had any shot of getting Eve to actually like me for more than just s****l favors.             The doors to the balcony slid open, and out walked Cole holding two beers in his hand. When I turned around to stare at him, he clinked the bottles before handing me one. “I know that we talked about it a little this morning, but if you got something on your mind, I’m here to listen, Joel. We’ve been friends longer than any of those guys in there. They don’t get what we are going through. Don’t blame them for it. They just haven’t found the right girl, and once they do, they will change. Until then, we have to deal with their crude attitudes toward women. Trust me, one day, we will be the ones laughing at them when they come running to us for relationship advice.”             “Well, that’s just it, isn’t it? Eve told me last night that she doesn’t believe in relationships. What the f**k am I supposed to do with that, Cole? It’s hard enough trying to be the nice guy for her, but when she makes comments like that, it's hard to hold my true self back.”             Cole let out one slight chuckle. “Then don’t. Stop being nice to her. You’re pretending to be someone that you are not to try and impress this girl. What if she doesn’t like nice? What if that is the whole problem? Take Mia, for example. It turns out that she liked bad, even when she didn’t think she would. Do you think for one second that I tried pretending to be anyone other than who I was to impress her? No, and it worked.”             “That’s different,” I responded, running my free hand through my hair. “Mia was inexperienced and wasn’t sure what she wanted. Eve is different. She isn’t exactly a virgin and has a particular taste. Mia told me that Eve has only ever been into rough-edged guys that boss her around. It didn’t last more than a few weeks of s*x before Eve dropped them. That’s why I am trying to be nice, trying to be patient, but goddamn if this woman isn’t testing me every second that I am with her.”             Cole clunk his bottle to mine then lifted it in the air. “Isn’t that the truth,” he said, and we both started laughing.
