William's pov
I couldn't let this feeling go, I decided to stay and watch her. Layla Jackson. I gave Fredrick my tracker in case we were separated. I guess having a chauffeur is helpful after all. All of the other library workers went home hours ago. But I stay and wait for Layla to go home. I at least wanted to make sure she got home safe. I watch her stock books. I can't get over how absolutely perfect she is. I want her. Something inside me is telling me I need to take her and keep her safe.
After hours of watching her it looks like Layla and the older woman start to lock up. Is she her mother? They get into a little blue car and I turn on my tracker so Fred will follow. They drive about 6 miles. Until they get to a very run down brick house. Is this where she is living? I see dirty toys and bikes in the yard. I listen in a shadow.
"Thank you so much Jenny." Layla says as they pull in the driveway.
"You are welcome baby. See you tomorrow!" Not her mom but she seems like a good friend to Layla. Layla waits until Jenny is gone then goes inside. I get closer to the house so I can hear.
"Where were you?" Kevin asks me.
"I was at work Kevin. I work almost every day."
"How many times have I told you to call me Daddy!" He barks at her. This pisses me. I want to tear his head off for talking to my Layla like that. My Layla? Where did that come from?
"You are not, and will never be my father. And in nine days I am leaving this hell hole!" She is fierce. This must be her reason for flinching.
"You ungrateful disrespectful b***h! I WILL f*****g KILL YOU IF YOU THINK YOU WILL EVER LEAVE HERE!" I go to the door, I'm about to pull the handle when I hear;
"If you try to leave, I will have to take my anger out on someone else." Who is he talking about? I hear Layla sigh then head upstairs. I watch her through a broken window. The sound of the TV is messing up my hearing. I decide to sit on the roof by her window. I hear her breathing.
I hear the stairs start to creak and hear Layla's breathing become faster. She is scared.
"Layla, I'm so tired of you talking back to me and disrespecting me in my own home. You are so lucky to have me and Darbie here for you. Even your own parents couldn't live with the fact you were their daught-"
"Please Kevin, just leave me alone! " She cuts him off.. He immediately grabs her by the throat. I see red. Then I hear.
"KILL ME! I f*****g HATE YOU AND THIS STUPID HOUSE!" He punches her. I can't take this. I try to get in the window but it's screwed in. I jump off the roof and break the front door down.
"You just want attention. You stupid worthless little b***h!" I hear him shouting as i'm running to her. When I get to her room he is kicking her. Some skinny woman and a bunch of kids follow me up the stairs. I throw this Kevin across the room. The woman and the kids instantly start screaming.
"William?" Layla says to me as she loses consciousness. I pick up Layla and carry her to the car. I gently place her in the back seat.
"Mollie, where is Mollie?" Layla is awake. I don't know who Mollie is but that can wait. I turn on the light so I can see her.
"Ow please, no light!" I turn it off quickly. I touch her arm and I feel a shock. I look at her and she smiles? I hope the shock doesn't hurt…
"Fredrick, hospital." He nods and the car starts moving.
"Mmmm" she groans "William? Is it you?" I wrap my arm around her back. Trying to reassure her she is safe.
"Yes, Miss Jackson. It's me." I pull her head into my chest. She snuggles into me and I'm so happy she's starting to trust me already. She smells like lavender.
"I told you, it's Layla.." She whispers and she drifts off to sleep. I have found my mate. We finally get to the hospital and Layla is still unconscious, I decide it's best if she is transferred to the Covington hospital as I trust Dr. Parker. He is a werewolf as well.
"Fred, keys," He nods and hands them over. He knows better than to ask questions. Although, I believe it's obvious where I'm going anyway.
"Fredrick please escort Layla in the ambulance. If she wakes up please tell her I will be right behind you." I don't want to leave her but I have business to take care of and I know Layla is in good hands.
I have an excellent sense of direction so I make my way back. I follow the street in complete silence. All I can hear is the car engine. The roads are empty. This town really is small. Finally after driving for a while I reached the run down brick house. To my surprise it's quiet, then I realize it's three a.m. The devil's hour. I laugh to myself at that detail. But I wonder why the police aren't here. Their child was kidnapped.
I knock on the door. No one answers so I knock louder. I hear a woman yell.
"We are sleeping, f**k off." This angers me. The door is still broken from earlier so I decide to just walk in. It's not hard to find who I'm looking for. He reeks of beer and cigarettes.
"Kevin, wake up," he doesn't budge. "KEVIN!" I roar in my alpha voice. He just got out of bed and I heard a few small children cry. Oops.
"Who the f**k are you! How dare you walk in my hou-" I cut him off and the woman looked shocked.
"I'm here to collect Layla's belongings and a Mollie I believe." I tell him. He looks so mad. He is big for a human. Well, he is fat. I wouldn't consider him a strong individual.
"Who do you think you are? This is my home! How dare you come in over some little whor-" I grab him by the throat. He has some balls talking about my Layla this way to my face. Humans are idiots. His partner is crying in a corner at this point. Still not calling the police. I am much taller than him and way stronger than him. He's probably six foot tall. I am six foot 6 inches tall
"You made a big mistake putting your hands on my mate today." I try to stay calm but Samson wants me to rip out his throat.
"Your mate?" The women chimes in this time. I look over and she looks confused.
"You don't even know Layla, she is a w***e. I'm not trying to make-," he continues to talk. I'm trying so hard to keep Samson from ripping his head off his shoulders.
"Just show me where her things are and who Mollie is!"
Kill him. Kill him now.
We can't kill a human without permission from the elders.
I can.
Samson no-
It's too late. Samson starts to come out and shift into wolf form, I'm trying with everything in me to keep him at bay. I can hear my bones cracking and my eyes are burning. Kevin and his partner are shocked and standing still. Idiots.
"Where is Layla?" I turn around and see a young girl, maybe five or so. That stops Samson. I walk up to her and bend down.
"Mollie?"
"Yes?" She is terrified but she is brave. She doesn't back down. She stands up tall.
"Get your things and I will take you to her." I smile at Mollie and I think that calms her down. She doesn't seem to notice my clothes are full of hair and she runs upstairs.
"What are you?" The woman gasps out. Kevin looks like he has seen a ghost.
"Don't you know what time it is?" They both look over at an old alarm clock. 3:30 AM, the devil's hour. They look back at me and I give them a devilish smile. I walk out of their room and follow Mollie's scent to see if she needs help. When I get to the room I am shocked. There are multiple girls asleep on the floor. I text my acquaintance. Who works for the Indiana state police, Richard.
William: Hey Richard, it's Will from Covington. I wanted to let you know I'm taking two girls from a house in Rollins. I walked in on a foster dad beating the older one. I have to get back to the hospital but if you can get a deputy out here I would appreciate it there are probably 9 kids here.
2 minutes later
Richard: Okay, I'll take your statement whoever you get a chance and get a hold of cps. Just text me the address and the girls names and I will get their info sent to you. Are you wanting to foster them?
William: I'll let you know tomorrow if that's okay. The oldest one is about to age out. Thanks man.
I text him their information and he lets me know he's got someone on the way. I pick a few bags up Mollie has packed. Then she looks at me.
"Is Layla okay?"
"I honestly don't know, I took her to the hospital then came to get you."
"Darbie and Kevin are letting us go?"
"They don't have a choice, Mollie, I have some friends coming to help the others."
"So what is your name anyway?" She asks as we walk down the stairs. I think they once had carpet on them but now they are worn down to plywood and staples.
"My name is William, but you can call me Will." We got the car and I put her stuff in the truck which is just two grocery bags and a backpack. I turn the car on and buckle Mollie in. I don't have a booster seat. She is so little.
"I'm going to go get Layla's things real quick-"
"I got them." What?
"The two of you together only have two grocery bags worth of stuff between you!?" Mollie just looks down. I didn't mean to sound so mad but I can't help it. Why is Layla even living like this? Where is her pack? I let it go. I will get them new things. And hopefully when Layla wakes up I will be able to figure out what happened. I wait in the car for the deputy to get here.
"Hey, Will?"
"Yes Mollie?"
"Could we listen to the radio?"
"Sure." I turn it on and I flick through stations. Soon she starts stinging along to Luke Combs. A little country girl. About ten minutes later she falls asleep. I see three cars pulling up at the house. I get out to talk to the deputy and he assures me the children are in good hands and that Darbie and Kevin will be locked up for a long time. So with that, I get in the car and head to the hospital to be reunited with my mate.
