At some point during the ascent, Maddock lost sight of his savior. He surmised that she had probably headed back down to her submerged base, which actually made a lot of sense. If she was operating out of a diving bell or something like that, then her body would be accustomed to working at depth, and rising to the surface too quickly could prove fatal. That still didn’t explain what she was doing there in the first place, but as he clawed his way back to the surface, feeling the burn of a breath held too long, that was the least of his worries.
