Dylan's face immediately fell at the mention of Marcus. If it was up to him, he would drag Gia as far away from him as possible. That boy was as undeserving of his sister as someone could be.
However, Gia was brimming with joy. She composed herself and appeared to be a calm and gentle woman. It was a party and knowingly or unknowingly, many people must be watching her. Other than the children of Knight family's friends, they also had their own identity to hold.
"He was right here." Alice looked around and found Marcus and Matthias by the buffet table. She chuckled and pointed, "There he is. Feeding his nephew."
Gia's eyes widen, "Nephew?"
She looked back and blinked. Sure enough there was Marcus, the love of her life, crouching down and feeding a little boy in a cute suit. Gia naturally smiled.
"I am so sorry, We couldn't attend Maximus' wedding. I missed so many things."
Alice waved away her apology, "It's okay. At least you made time to come now."
"We should meet Max and his wife first. You can look for others later." Dylan cut in. Alice also nodded and showed them where they were.
Gia and Dylan approached Max and Amara, who had just finished their conversation with someone.
"Max!" Gia excitedly called his name. Maximus frowned and looked back at her. Gia stood a good few steps away from him and looked at Amara from head to toe, mentally giving her a full score.
Max instinctively put an arm around Amara and narrowed his eyes. He couldn't recognise her at all at first. But the more he looked, her face looked more familiar.
Then he looked at Dylan and everything came back at once.
"Gia. Dylan."
His monotone greeting earned a little jab from Amara. He fixed his face and greeted them normally.
"You are so pretty!" Gia immediately went to Amara side and started complementing her dress. It was honestly very preety and just so happened to be the one she liked the best this season.
"Thank you, you are very pretty too. Gia right?"
Gia nodded, she pointed a finger at Dylan who was busy catching up with Maximus, "That's my big brother Dylan. Our parents were friends with the knight's."
Amara nodded in understanding, "Oh."
They talked about some random things and the conversation flew very smoothly. Gia felt they got along just fine. Amara was nice.
"I could not attend your wedding because of a heavy schedule. I am so sorry. I will take you shopping some day and get you a nice gift." Gia giggled, "A very late wedding gift."
Amara giggled as well, "It's fine. You don't have to."
"I absolutely must!"
"Also, I am a lawyer, so if you get into any scandals or get in trouble you should come to me!"
Amara nodded earnestly, although she doubted she would ever get into a scandal with Maximum hovering over her all the time.
Gia wouldn't stop talking unless she was stopped. Dylan knew this and decided to interrupt her now.
"Gia, we should talk to Elliott and Nigella as well."
Gia's eyes swept over to the buffet table, her face fell a little when she couldn't see Marcus.
"Yes, you should! I am sure he will be very happy to see you!" Amara added.
Gia waved a goodbye and followed Dylan.
After exchanging a conversation with Elliott and Nigella, who were the sweetest couple, Dylan did not let Gia go away. He held her by the arm and dragged her to other people who did not concern her.
It was troublesome to be in a party. They were obliged to greet so many people, make small conversations and put on a smile all the time.
Gia had no problem with it before. In her firm, no one was as good as her in socializing. But today she was fidgety and impatient. She didn't come here to go around like a woman on her debut ball looking for a husband. She came to see Marcus and only him!
"We have been away from New York for a long time Gia, we need these connections. No matter how good or popular you were, you are just a newbie here. You need these people and so do I. So put on that smile and come along."
But Dylan wasn't wrong.
So Gia sucked it up and let them see the most glamorous side of her. The way she smiled, the way she walked and talked, everything was dazzling. Those envious gazes swept over her and stopped. She was an attention grabber wherever she went.
"Who is she?"
"Neve seen her before."
"The knight's invited her, must be someone noticable."
Marcus was in another corner when he heard the ladies converse among themselves. He had just gotten away after leaving Mattias with Pearl and was happy to be alone.
Upon hearing these words, he looked where those ladies were looking and found that it was a woman in a rose gold dress. She was quiet far from them and only her back was visible.
Although he couldn't see her face, the way she walked, her hand gestures, her posture, everything looked very elegant.
"And look at that man next to her. Is that her boyfriend?"
"Could be. They are totally unknown. Maybe we should talk to them and get an idea who they are?"
"Are you joking Mrs Smith?"
"Absolutely not."
Marcus then noticed the man right next to her. They went everywhere together and looked like a pair. Occasionally the woman clutched his arm and the man would hold her.
Marcus shrugged and looked away. They didn't concern him. He rested against a pillar and scrolled through his phone. His friend group was buzzing with messages. They were inviting him for a birthday party of a mutual friend whom Marcus didn't know.
"I won't go. I am buzy."
Immediately, everyone started to scold him for being an antisocial prick and what not. He heard footsteps approaching him and looked up. He stood straight and looked guilty. His mother found him.
"Mom I -"
"I don't want any excuses! Get out of this corner and entertain the guests!" Alice ordered. It took her some time to find him, her son was really talented in hiding!
"But mom, all they talk about is their daughter or cousin or sister who is apparently very eligible to marry me. They only ask me when I'll get married!"
"I won't let you off this time! Come with me!"
Alice dragged Marcus out of the corner and into the light. He didn't even see where his mother was taking him. He kept his head low and looked at the floor. When they stopped, a floor length rose gold dress came into his view. He followed the line and looked io at the face.
She was beautiful. Marcus swore in his heart.
"Hi Marcus!" The woman greeted him enthusiastically. She was holding a glass of red wine. Her glittering eyes were fixed on him, her glossy lips curved into the most charming smile. She looked like a goddess.
