“There are so many books,” Audrey says, looking around at the stacks on every surface in the living room.
“I thought it would help me,” I tell her, feeling a little silly. “It’s pretty overwhelming, though.”
“What are you looking for?” she asks, walking past Gus to sit with me.
I shrug. “I don’t know. Anything that may help. I don’t know enough to know what I need.”
“That’s alright,” she tells me, patting my knee. “It’s all going to work out. How are things with Seth?”
“Fine,” I say with another shrug. “I’m past it.”
“Are you truly, or are you looking past it because there’s so much danger?”
I take a deep breath, knowing that she’s seen right through me. “I’m trying. But I’m so scared right now.”
“Good. You should be.”
I look at her in shock. “What?”
