Chapter Seventeen Jane“There has to be some sort of mistake.” I’m clutching my cell phone with one hand and the edge of my desk with the other, trying to keep from falling over. I refuse to believe this is happening. The nurse on the phone is calm and collected, but I’m frantic, praying that she’s got it all wrong, that my father is completely healthy. But she insists on repeating the truth I don’t want to hear. Ken Royce, my father, has had a heart attack and is in the hospital. And from the tone of the nurse’s voice, things must not be looking good. The walls of my office shift and spin around me as I feel my head go light as air and I let myself fall back into my desk chair.
