I waited several minutes and heard nothing back. Maybe I was going crazy or maybe I was just hungry. I stayed there for another ten minutes but never heard anything and the smell was getting fainter. I know that you can smell your mate but I wasn’t eighteen yet. I still two more days and the world will explode around me. Maybe I will smell him again and then I can find him.
I could feel how sad Blue was about not getting a howl back so I promised her we could run a bit more before heading home. She got up and ran back into the forest on the hunt for a squirrel to chase. We never actually caught the squirrel to kill it since we never needed the meat but I knew we would do it if we had to. Blue just likes seeing how fast she can go and the jumps she can get over. We had finally found a squirrel to chase when we heard a howl. Blue’s ears perked up hoping it was a reply howl but it was the nearby pack. I hadn’t even smelled them and now they are closer than I had ever let them be. ‘Run Blue Run” I yelled at her hoping we were fast enough to make it home and shift before any of them get my scent or see me.
I could hear the sound of several wolves running behind me, trying to catch up to an unknown wolf. If you aren’t a part of their pack it was wrong to be on their lands. Once caught they could do what they wanted with you and most packs got as much information from you before killing you. Since the numbers of wolves that make up a pack used to be in the thousands so there wasn’t much worry in a long, rogue wolf but now since the packs are down to maybe 200 wolves at most and the number of packs were down to less than 20 it was a whole different story.
‘They are getting closer. We need to lose them or lose our scent,’ Blue panted as we tried to pick up speed. I started to look around to see where we were and form a plan. ‘Blue run toward the water we can run threw the mud and circle back confusing them.’ She agreed and turned toward the water. Most of the wolves were to our right and behind us. We were still running fast enough they couldn’t get a good lock on us.
‘Ok almost there. Get ready,’ I told Blue as I saw the mud pits. She ran into them and rolled around as fast as she good and turned back around racing behind several big bushes so they could not see us. I heard their confusion as they howled and were sniffing everything. We laughed and ran back to the house. I shifted in the back yard and ran for the water hose. I quickly got clean and grabbed my clothes. I made sure my necklace was the first thing I put back on. It covers my scent to all werewolves, and I can only have it off when I am shifted. If a werewolf were to smell me before then they could easily take me and use me against all the other wolves. My wolf isn’t as strong as she will be when in two days when I have my birthday. Then I can work on fixing everything in the werewolf world due to my royal blood.
My parents were already in bed when I made it back inside. I warmed up some food and went up to my room. I opened my window so I could hear the howls better. I wish I knew who the other wolves were but my necklace works both ways. They can’t sense me and I can’t sense them. It has frustrated me since forever. I just know if I knew who the alphas were of the packs around me I could work out what kind of wolf they were and make a plan to unite them with me to save us all. They would be more prepared for the family secret I have to share when the time is right so we can win against the vampires and witches. They are still some hanging around taking us out one by one but most have returned to their homes. They got to return to their families and kiss their kid’s goodnight unlike my kind. My parents sacrificed themselves for me and it just wasn’t fair. I never got the kisses on my skinned knees or the books before bed with kisses after. I felt tears start falling down my cheeks and I let myself cry to sleep.
