Chapter One
The sound of the front door opening snapped Cara Pierson out of her reverie. Derrick walked in, his face a mask of indifference. He barely glanced at her as he set his keys on the table and loosened his tie. "Cara, we need to talk," he said, his voice devoid of any warmth. A cold chill ran down her spine. She had been dreading this moment, sensing its approach but hoping she was wrong. "What is it, Derrick?" she asked, her voice trembling despite her efforts to sound calm. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I want a divorce." The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Cara felt as if the ground had been pulled out from under her. She had known things were bad, but she never expected this. "Why?" she managed to whisper, her eyes filling with tears. Derrick avoided her gaze, his jaw set in a hard line. "Cara, we've been through this before. You know how important it is for me to have a family. We've tried, and it's not happening. I can't keep living like this." His words cut through her like a knife. They had indeed tried to have a child, and she had endured the heartbreak of every failed attempt. But to hear him use it as an excuse now felt like a betrayal on a whole new level. "So, this is about me not being able to give you a child?" she asked, her voice breaking. Derrick nodded, his expression unyielding. "Yes, Cara. I need to be with someone who can give me what I want." The tears flowed freely now, and Cara could barely see through them. She felt a mix of anger and despair, but deep down, she knew there was more to this. Derrick's late nights, the secretive phone calls, the sudden need for business trips—she had suspected something for a while but had no proof. Until now. A few days ago, her friend Emily, who worked at a big hotel in the city, had sent her a short footage. Cara had watched in disbelief as the video showed Derrick taking an unidentified woman into one of the hotel rooms. The timestamp indicated it was from one of his so-called business trips. Taking a deep breath, she reached for her phone and played the video again, the grainy footage confirming her worst fears. She looked up at Derrick, her eyes blazing with a mix of hurt and fury. "And what about her?" she demanded, shoving the phone in his face. "Is this the real reason you want a divorce?” She looked up at him, her eyes pleading for an explanation, for some shred of decency in the man she had loved. To her shock, Derrick didn't seem remorseful. Instead, a cruel laugh escaped his lips, echoing through the room like a cold, bitter wind. His eyes, once warm and familiar, now held a glint of malice that sent a shiver down Cara's spine. "You caught me," he said, his voice laced with sarcasm. "Congratulations, Cara. You finally caught on." Cara recoiled at his callousness, the words cutting deeper than any knife. "How can you laugh at this, Derrick? How can you betray me like this?" she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. Derrick's laughter subsided, replaced by a sneer of contempt. "Betray you? Oh, please. You think this is about you? You and your pathetic existence, your inability to give me what I want. A child, Cara. A child that you could never give me." His words struck her like a physical blow, each one a dagger aimed at her heart. The man standing before her now bore little resemblance to the husband she had known. This was a cruel and vindictive stranger who reveled in her pain. "How can you say that?" she cried, tears streaming down her face. "I tried, Derrick. I tried so hard. And this is how you repay me? By cheating on me?" Derrick's face twisted into a mocking smile. "Cheating? Oh, Cara. This isn't cheating. This is me seeking what I deserve. What I need. You were never enough for me, and you never will be." The cruelty of his words seared through her, leaving her raw and exposed. She had known their marriage was strained, but she never imagined he could be capable of such callousness. The man she had loved and trusted had turned into a heartless stranger before her eyes. "You're a monster," she whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "I don't know who you are anymore, Derrick." He shrugged, a cold indifference settling over him like a cloak. "You never really knew me, Cara. You were too blinded by your own delusions to see the truth.” She gazed at him in disbelief. “But I thought…we loved each other…” "Stop with the lies. You forced me into a loveless marriage, Cara," Derrick spat, his voice dripping with contempt. "You never truly cared for me. You married me for my money, for the comfortable life I provided you. Well, it's time to face reality. Sign the papers and get out of my house." He barked. The words hung in the air, heavy and bitter. Cara felt as if her world had collapsed around her, leaving nothing but shards of broken dreams in its wake. She tried to speak, to defend herself against his cruel accusations, but the words caught in her throat, suffocated by the weight of his betrayal. At first, tears streamed down her cheeks, silent witnesses to the pain and anguish consuming her from within. But then, a quiet resolve settled over her like a cloak. With trembling hands, she wiped her face, steeling herself against the storm raging around her. Without a word, she took the pen on the table and signed the divorce papers. “You could've just done that before instead of letting me explain myself.” Derrick scowled and with a final, contemptuous glance, he turned and walked away, leaving Cara standing alone in the ruins of their shattered life. Gathering her belongings in silence, she struggled to keep her tears at bay as the memories of their once happy life came back to her. Cara and Derrick had only been together for two years, and they were so madly in love with each other that everyone else envied them greatly. Derrick was a successful entrepreneur and a big business tycoon, while Cara was one of his employees at the time. What looked like a happy union had quickly descended into chaos in such a short time, and it was never Cara’s fault. As she closed the door of the bedroom behind her, Cara left behind the shattered remnants of a life that had once held so much promise. Outside the mansion, the darkness of the night enveloped her like a discomforting shroud. The air was heavy with the weight of her grief. As she pondered on who to call for help, she suddenly remembered her best friend, Emily Thomas. Quickly pulling out her phone, Cara dialed her number, her voice oddly steady despite the turmoil raging within her. "Emily, it's me. Can you pick me up? It's late, and it's dark out here." Emily's voice on the other end was like a lifeline in the darkness,"Of course, Cara. I'll be there in ten minutes. Hang in there.”
