Chapter FourThe Marchioness of Conyngham was fat, religious, kindly, rich and rapacious. At fifty-two, with four grown-up children, she could hardly believe that her new beau should be the King of England. After twenty-seven years of marriage her beauty was beginning to fade and, although she had been greatly admired, nobody had ever said that she was particularly amusing or outstandingly intelligent.
