Chapter 7 Life aboard the sailing ship Jemima was more ordered and regimented than Lucien was used to. Upon arriving on the vessel, he and Abel were met by Captain Forbes-Forrester and his second-in-charge, a Mister Lewisham. They were shown into the captain’s quarters, where they were treated to whisky and figs. Sitting in padded leather armchairs that stood atop carpeted floors, they recounted their individual stories before being examined by the ship’s physician. “Naturally, you may rest,” said Captain Forbes-Forrester. “After an ordeal such as yours, I’d expect you to spend at least the next day or so in bed.” It was kind of the captain, but after sleeping for twenty-four hours in a bunk bed with soft sheets and warm blankets, Lucien was refreshed and ready to work for his passage.
