The following morning, a warm wind buffeting his naked body woke him. The blue skies had become grey with cloud, and the air thick and soupy. The minute he stepped onto the beach, he could see a black line on the horizon. “It’s coming fast,” he said to Edgar, who had joined him. Edgar looked worried. “We should go to the cave. As soon as possible.” Lucien slid his spear under the woven palm mat, then placed four large rocks on the mat to prevent it from blowing away. He collected whatever food they had, which amounted to no more than some cold, cooked breadfruit and half a coconut, and headed into the jungle.
