A few of Gulbaz"s horsemen slowed as they tried to ascertain who was charging towards them. A hail or two sounded through the dark. Somebody fired a shot in the air. With a curtain of dust adding to the darkness, Jack drew his revolver, hoping he could retain his seat without stirrups. "Now, Fatteh! Sound the charge!" The brassy notes cut through the night, joined by the yells and cheers of the Guides. "Forward the Guides!" Jack added his own voice to the noise. "Number One troop, to the right. Number Two troop, guard the flanks! Number Three Troop, act as rearguard!" Leaning forward over his horse"s neck, he fired two shots at the now confused Rahmut Khel. "Follow me, Guides!" The Guides hit Gulbaz"s men hard, slicing into the hesitating horsemen and pushing through without pausing. J
