I looked at the woman in front of me but felt nothing. Don’t get me wrong, she is beautiful; she has chestnut hair and green eyes, but I didn’t feel anything. I didn’t feel your pull when you met your mate. I didn’t think she was an angel who had fallen from heaven. And most importantly, I couldn’t forget Ivy.
I talked with Alphas, who had a second chance mate, and they told me that you don’t forget about the first one, but your second chance mate occupies everything you thought, just like the first one did.
Was something wrong with me? She has the scent of my mate. Ares recognized her as such, but he didn’t tell me to mark her or anything else.
“She is not mate. Why does she smell like mate?” Ares asked, clearly confused by the fact that this woman smelled like our mate.
"I don’t know, Ares, but we will find out."
“Excuse me, Alpha Ronald and Luna Kya, but this young woman smells like my mate,” I said.
They looked at each other in astonishment. They probably thought an Alpha had found his mate in an Omega, which was good for them. Unfortunately, that wasn’t true.
“Amanda, do you recognize him as your mate?” Luna Kya asked her.
The poor girl didn’t know what to do. She didn’t look so young, but it was clear that she had been through something horrible; her eyes gave her away.
“No, Luna, I don’t. I’m sorry,” her voice cracked, and her eyes started tearing up. f**k! What have I done?
“Please explain yourself, Alpha Alexander.”
Damn it, I didn’t want her to cry. She must think something is wrong with her because she can’t feel the bond.
“I’m sorry for the confusion. She smells like my mate; she has something on that has her scent, but she isn’t my mate,” I explained before a misunderstanding arose.
They looked at me with a strange look, like they didn’t know what I was talking about.
“When you find your mate, that person is all you can think about. I’m sorry, Amanda, I don’t feel that with you, but for some reason, you have a scent my wolf recognizes as the one of his mate.” I hope that clears it out.
“Then… I’m not your mate?” She looked at me with her green eyes, and it looked like she was disappointed by the news. It made sense; she thought she might be an Alpha’s mate, and I was taking that away from her.
“Well, Amanda, what do you have that doesn’t belong to you?” Alpha Ronald asked her. She seemed to be deep in thought like she couldn’t remember what part of her wardrobe had been on another woman.
“We could smell her and find out what that is.” Ares was impatient, and so was I, but that would have been a huge mistake.
"No, Ares, that is invading her personal space, and we are NOT going to do that."
“Ugh, fine,” he grunted and retreated to the back of my mind. I knew he was frustrated, but we would not make someone uncomfortable by finding out what she had on that had my mate’s scent.
“My necklace! It doesn’t belong to me. It was given to me by my friend, but she came here for a visit a couple of days ago. She is now gone,” Amanda said.
What? That didn’t make sense; the scent that I got from the necklace was fresh. Maybe a couple of hours long, so why was she lying?
“She is hiding our mate; we should interrogate her,” He growled this time.
"We will not do such a thing, Ares. I get that you are anxious and want to find her, but we are in strange lands to fulfill a mission, and if we break any laws, Ivy is going to come here to blow our ass," I scolded him. It was the first time he was acting before thinking and I had to hold him down.
Thankfully, after that, Ares didn’t fight me anymore. He was the cautious one of the both of us, but it seemed that the possible presence of our mate was making him reckless.
“Alpha, we would love to speak with you in private.” The Luna addressed me. I looked at Joseph because I felt uncomfortable being alone in a pack I had just arrived in.
“I’ll be honored, Luna Kya, but my beta is my right hand, and he always attends my meetings, so I ask that he comes with me as well.” I couldn’t bring Chase into the mix because he was young and had no relationship with my pack, but I would ask him to stay in his room until we finished talking.
“That is fine, we understand. Amanda, please take the other gentleman to his room.”
“Chase Walker, he is a dear friend of mine.” I forgot that I never introduced them to the Alpha and Luna. Chase looked at me and gave me a silent ‘thank you’ before he went with Amanda inside the pack house.
“Please, follow me.” The alpha said to us.
The house wasn’t extraordinary. Although some renovations had been made, it still lacked much technology. Instead of a heater, it was heated by a fireplace. All the decorations were made of very traditional wood. The floor was covered with brown carpet, which kept the place warmer.
The office was on the first floor and had everything it needed. The alpha sat behind his desk while his wife stood by his side. We took the seats in front of him, and I waited for him to talk. I guess they wanted to explain some ground rules to us or ask us what happened back there. Either way, we were ready for his questions.
"Alpha, I asked you to come here because, from my understanding, you had a chosen mate before. So how could you know that the young woman wasn't your mate if you haven't experienced the mate before?" He asked.
Fuck, I didn't know how they got that information on me. Only a few people had that input because my father told everyone that Bianca and I were fated mates. It would not look good if I had taken a chosen mate after I had a fated mate.
"May I ask how you got that information?"
The Alpha smiled at me, f**k, I had fallen into his trap. He was testing me.
"I didn't know it, but you confirmed my suspicions. You see, a fated mate doesn't do the things that your mate did, and I guess that your fated mate is the one that your chosen one tried to kill." He was very intelligent, meaning that I had to be careful around him.
"I will not clarify that further, but yes, I had a fated mate; that is why I know how the bond works, and apparently, my second chance mate is here, but your maid is hiding her," I accused.
Now, it was his time to look surprised. Of course, he noticed two scents; he was also an alpha.
"I don't know what you are talking about," His voice wavered at the end. It was subtle, but I noticed it.
I didn't like the sound of that; this pack was hiding something from me, and I was going to uncover the truth, one way or another.
"Well, if that is all you wanted to talk about." I was going to leave the office, but then Luna Kya spoke.
"Look, my husband is just taking care of our members. Amanda is an orphan, and sometimes she meets with people we don't like."
"Rogues?" I interrupted her, and she nodded. It could make sense, but her scent wasn't the one of a rogue or an omega. Even if she was my mate, I could still tell what rank she was. The weird thing is that I detected nothing, like she wasn't a werewolf like she was something else.
"Still, I would like to find my mate; after all, that is why we came." I looked at Joseph. There was nothing else we could discuss, and I wanted to start the investigation as soon as possible. In just a few minutes, I noticed that they were hiding something from us, and I was going to find out what it was.
"Wait, Alpha, you haven't presented us," Kya said, and she looked at my Beta in a strange way. I could feel how he tensed up, showing me that what I perceived wasn't in my imagination.
"Alpha, Luna, this is my Beta, Joseph Hale. I presented you to my other guest, who came as a representative of the king's pack."
"So the king liked you even if you were his mate's first mate?" I did not like his tone or the sarcasm he used.
I squinted my eyes, but I would not let him see that he had said something true. I would play the same game that he was playing, and I would win.
"As I said, I don't know what you are talking about. I came here to find my mate, and apparently, she is here. My friends would also like to find the same thing, and if someone in your pack is Chase's mate, then you will be linked to the King. That is a great opportunity for you, is it not?" His eyes shined with greed. My suspicion was true; all he wanted was to obtain contacts and power for his pack.
Just like my father. He was a greedy Alpha.
I could understand that. He wanted what was best for the pack members, but I could not understand why he was hiding someone from the Alpha of another pack. That would have allowed him to connect with me, another alpha.
"Now, if you don't mind, we want to rest. It was a long trip," I said, I needed to think, and the trip here was not an easy one.
They said nothing else, so we exited the office.
I was going to find her, and I would uncover whatever the hell was going on here.
