Chapter 12

BERYL Friday flies off faster than I expected. Just like yesterday, Mr. Wilson is silent and that isn't a good sign at all. I wonder if he has told Brenda and Helen about Henry wanting to marry me. Why would he want to marry me anyway? I have no class, I'm poor, I don't go out like Brenda, I don't wear expensive clothes, why? Brenda is so much the trophy wife. She's so good at socialising except for her clubbing. If you ask me, she belongs to the red carpet. As for me, I'm hardworking and efficient but outside I'm a mess. I'm even afraid of my own shadow. All thanks to the Wilsons, they've done their best in tampering with my self esteem. When my parents were alive, I used to be a bubbly and outgoing kid, always wanting to know everything and everyone. However, that's not the case any more. I am a shell of my former self. They've succeeded in bringing me down to nothing. They've broken me and shattered the already cracked pieces! I continue with my job though there's no much work to do since I finished most of it last night. “Beryl...” Arnold's voice pulls me back from my thoughts. I look up and give him a polite smile. I'm no longer comfortable around him since the other day's outburst. “Are you okay?” he asks, concern etched all over his face. “I am okay. Just got lost in thoughts.” He smiles broadly, lifting up a paper bag. “Guess what? I brought you lunch!” I sit up on my seat and tell him that he didn't have to do that. He takes a seat opposite me and pulls out two plastic containers from the paper bag and two bottles of water. “So, what are your plans this weekend?” he asks as he places the food on my desk. “Blake is dragging me out.” I reply bluntly. “He always has to be the one to force me out!” “Oh! I see!” he looks disappointed. “Where is he taking you?” “I don't know...maybe a club or something.” “It's alright!” he says, his jaw clenching. We eat in silence. His anger is evident and I'm beginning to get scared of him. Too many red flags are already showing about him. “Thanks for lunch Arnold.” I smile. “But I better get back to—” “Beryl!” Mr. Wilson's voice screams through the intercom. I sigh and get up. Arnold too stands up and grabs my arm as I walk past him, making my breathe to hitch in my throat. He's too close for my comfort. “Arnold!?” I can't read the look in his eyes. “I have to go!” His jaw clenches and his grip tightens before letting go of me. I continue walking to the boss's office. “Sir?” “Get me a meeting with Buzz Communications!” he orders. I tremble, swallowing the lump that has formed in my throat and try to steady my shaking hands. “Yes sir..” My voice trembles. “Make it a lunch. Your presence won't be required!” he bellows. “Of course sir!” I sigh in relief. Arnold is already gone when I get back to the office. Since lunch time is over, I get back to work and after booking the Buzz communication boss for lunch with Mr. Wilson, I get back to work. My boss leaves the office earlier and I'm done by 6pm. I'm already preparing to go home when Blake's voice startles me. “Ready to go cupcake?” he asks, chuckling as usual. I nod and smile as I get everything ready and lock up the office. Collins informs me that he'll be getting himself ready in the family house because Helen wants to have dinner with him. We drive home in his car as he sings along to the music. He's a terrible singer though. I walk to my room, kick off my shoes and walk back to the kitchen where Andrew is busy preparing a French cuisine. I greet him happily and help him serve dinner. Helen and Blake continue discussing...or rather gossiping as we have our dinner. As I munch on to my chicken, mother brings me back to reality. “Oh my goodness Beryl, you don't need to eat all that!” she exclaims. “What will people think? You're already overweight as it is!” “Mummy!” Blake scowls at her. “Beryl is perfect as she is now. If anything, she needs to add weight!” Helen snorts in response. I push my plate away and sigh. “Beryl, finish your meal.” Blake says softly. “I was done already.” I smile at him. “I'll be in my room getting ready.” I say then excuse myself and head upstairs. I shower, blowdry my hair and tie it up. I then dress up in a red dinner dress and black heels. I apply some make up as well. I put my Identity Card, bank card and some money in my clutch after applying my make up and then head downstairs to meet Blake. “Are you ready?” Blake asks as he types away on his phone. “Yes.” He looks up at me and smiles in satisfaction. “You look good cupcake. I'll have to keep a been eye on you through out!” I smile and murmur a thankyou. He too looks great in his tuxedo. He's tall and handsome. We walk down the stairs arm in arm. Someone who doesn't know us would mistake us for lovebirds. Brenda is waiting downstairs and I frown after seeing her impatiently tapping her foot down. She's wearing a white bandage dress which barely hides her essential parts. “I had to let her come with us. She found out about our date and she insisted on accompanying us!” Blake explains with a heavy sigh. “It's alright!” I reply absentmindedly. It's gonna be a long night! HENRY The club is full and hard to navigate through the crowd of people. They are shouting as if in a competition to be heard. I skip the line and get a booth in the VIP section upstairs. I order a whisky and settle down, sipping onto it. Someone shouts my name and I turn to see Becky my call girl. I gulp my whisky in one swing and signal the barman to bring another one for me. “You stopped calling me!” she says as she takes a seat next to me. Her hand makes it's way to my groin. “I missed you Henry!” she says then smiles at me seductively, licking her lips lustfully. Her fingers find my chest and starts caressing it. I sigh and brush her hand off me. “I'm here to meet someone, so leave!” She leaves after blowing me a kiss and ordering me to call her else she will find her way to my house. I can't just seem to brush Beryl off my mind. Her voice makes me want to strip her naked! I'm not looking into any other woman's direction. Never. My eyes scan the crowd and I see Blake trying to locate me. I wave at him and I'm glad when I see him in the company of Beryl who's clinging onto his arms like her life depends on it. Our eyes lock and her lips curve in a polite smile. Her figure hugging dress brings out her curves better and I suddenly start lusting on her. “I'm glad you made it!” Blake says, shaking my hand. “I'm glad to see—” I'm cut short by someone clinging onto me and her body meets with mine. Her lips are already on my cheeks. “I'm glad to see you Henry. It seems like forever!” Brenda exclaims. Blake turns to Beryl, rolling his eyes. He's obviously disgusted by his sister's behaviour. “Cupcake, let go and get some drinks!” Beryl nods, throws us a glance then follows Blake to the bar. “Get off me Brenda!” I push her hands off my neck and sit back on my seat. She slides in next to me and locks her arms with mine. “Mother said we should be planning our wedding and engagement party.” So that motherfucker hasn't talked to them about who I am planning to get married to? I sip my drink and do my best to shake her off. Beryl and Blake come back with their drinks. Blake smirks at me, obviously enjoying my discomfort while I glare at him. Beryl sits between Blake and I in the boot. “Where's mine?” Brenda asks while frowning. “Go and get it.” Blake shrugs, sipping his gin and tonic. “We are not your servants!” he adds without blinking an eyelid. She rolls her eyes as she gets up to go. “Haaaa!” I sigh in relief. “Thanks for getting her off me!” I thank Blake in relief. I've just noticed that Blake is attached to his foster sister more than his blood sister. “You've never been to a club before?” Blake asks Beryl. “Never!” she replies, a smile twitching in her lips. A few seconds later, Brenda comes back and sits next to me usual. I'm engaging Beryl into a conversation and Brenda tries her best to divert my attention. “Don't pay so much attention to her!” Brenda tells me. “Nobody does.” I'm about to speak but Blake throws her a hateful and warning glance and growls at her. “Shut up damn it, will you Brenda?” “She has used her witchcraft on you but she can't dare try that on me!” Brenda says, glaring at Beryl. She doesn't even have respect for her elder brother. One more word from her dirty mouth and I'm going to snap! BERYL. I down my drink in one gulp. “It's okay Blake!” I assure him, putting my palm in his. “Don't let her push you down!” he says softly. A barman brings eight tots of tequila and we drink with joy. Brenda is literally seated on Henry's laps. “I'm going to dance.” Blake says and leans to whisper something in Henry's ear. “Cupcake, stay with him. I'll be right back.” he says and with that, he's gone. Brenda is busy kissing Henry on the cheeks then the lips. He let's out a sharp exasperated breathe and pushes Brenda off his laps. She crosses her arms on her chest and huffs. “Let's go and dance too baby!” she tells Henry, pulling him onto his feet but he doesn't relent. “I'm staying here with Beryl. Go and have fun.” He says with a frown, trying to be nice. “She can babysit herself!” She says while glaring at me. Enough of her mockery! I stand up and I feel the alcohol taking a toll on me. I stumble a little and Henry holds me for support. “Where are you going to?” He asks. “To the ladies. I'll be right back.” I reply in a slurry mode. He sighs in relief and let's go of me. I find my way through the crowd and walk towards the dark hallway, finally tracing the ladies. *Why did I feel irritated when I saw her kissing him?* After I'm done with my business in there, I wash my hands then rinse them, shaking off all those thoughts. Immediately I get out of the washrooms, a hand grabs me and drags me further down the dark hallway. I'm slammed on the wall and I scream in pain. Before I can say anything, big lips are planted on mine and I'm now breathless. The attacker's whole body is against mine, leaving no room for me to move. He licks my ear lobs, my neck and his hands find their way to my breasts, fondling them painfully. His other hand slides into my panties and tries removing them. “Stop!” I scream. “You're mine...mine alone!” A husky voice growls into my ear. There's no point shouting because no one will hear me over the loud music. His lips are again on mine and he bites on to my lower lip. I scream in pain when feel the metallic taste of blood in my mouth. Tears fall down my cheeks and my whole body shakes. Suddenly, the body which is pinning me on the wall is ripped off me and my knees buckle and I crumble to the ground, sobbing and holding my body. I can faintly hear grunts and sounds of punches landing before it stops. A few seconds later, I hear someone approaching me and I flinch. “Beryl.” A hand reaches for my chin and lifts it up. Our eyes meet and a smile melts into his icy blue eyes. “It's okay now. You're safe.” He whispers and wipes my tears. I fling myself into his strong arms. Henry embraces my shaking form while I bury my face in his neck! His warm hand rubs my back. His cologne is calming and soothing. He makes a call to someone, most probably his driver and shouts an order. “Bring around the car!” he orders and effortlessly lifts me up. How I wish we could stay like this forever.
