“I do not know why your highness is asking this. Is there something I should know about why our family was invited to tonight’s ball?”
“Would you believe me if I said there’s a lot?” his lips curved.
My eyes narrowed at him, “Seeing as you’re trying to make me stay in the palace, it will only benefit you, right? It’s not for my own good. You were very cold to me when we first met but now, you want to get closer. Can I ask what my prince really wants?”
The music picked up and he spun me around, completely letting me go before grabbing my arms again as he pulled me closer to himself. His steps were steady and I could tell he was very good at this dance.
“I like that you are straight to the point, but you ask too many questions, Hazel. It’s not good for you.” he whispered near my ear. “Sometimes, we just have to go with the flow of things, without questions, because the answer may not be something you really want to know.”
“Then are you asking me to trust you? We just met and-”
“You don’t have to trust me. I just want you to see some things for yourself tonight.” he was back to being cold, but I could also see he was trying to control himself which almost made me scoff and roll my eyes.
“If you’re still not curious enough, then you can pass it up.” he leaned forward and whispered so close to me, his lips were almost touching my ear and I could swear I heard a growl which definitely was not from him but from someone close by. I shivered involuntarily, feeling a piercing gaze on me as I raised my head.
I found the Second Prince staring straight at me. He had a woman in his arms but his eyes, they were glaring at me. Or was it Raiden?
I quickly looked away. Every time our gazes locked, I always felt this restless feeling in my heart. I couldn’t explain it.
“What do you say, Hazel?” Raiden’s words brought me out of my daze and I looked at him, spinning in his arms and going around him.
“I’m not sure.” I told him, sliding my hands down his broad back expertly, “While I’m curious about what this is all about, I’m not comfortable with the thought of someone using me for personal gain.” I let him bring me forward again as we danced.
“I’m not using you.”
“How do I believe that? You’re trying your best not to blow up right now. Do I annoy you so much?”
“That’s because…” he started, but as if changing his mind, he took in a deep breath and said, “You’re reading me wrongly. It’s not because of you. How about you think about it and tell me your decision later, but you have to know that it’s very important you stay in the palace tonight.”
I didn’t give him a reply to that because I wasn’t sure if taking his offer was a better option. I couldn’t read him or even know what he was thinking. This kind of people were very dangerous, and I just had a feeling I should be careful when dealing with him.
We finished the first dance, but I didn’t feel like dancing any longer and so, he accompanied me. We sat on a round table and I was not surprised to see some familiar faces.
Melody.
She had been clinging on to the First Prince ever since we arrived and I couldn’t help but think of what Raiden told me just now. Although he didn’t explain what the king wanted in detail, I could tell it was not that simple.
We talked a bit and I couldn’t help but notice how the First Prince, Grayson’s eyes were fixed on me the whole time. The others wouldn’t notice, but I could feel his gaze checking me out.
My eyes casually looked around, okay not casually, they specifically searched for someone in the crowd of people dancing, but he wasn’t there.
The second Prince.
It was only after a while, I saw him seated in a corner, Larissa was with him and I saw her hand him a glass of drink. He didn’t even check and just downed everything in one gulp. Something seemed to be bothering him and I saw Larissa give a small smile of victory to her friends who were watching her from a distance.
Wait… that drink… could it be…?
Wow, she really did go on with her plan. I knew it wasn’t my place to interfere, I wasn’t usually a busybody, but why did I feel so bothered? Why do I feel like I should warn him?
“Is it true that you are an adopted daughter?” this question from the First Prince startled me, and I quickly brought my attention back to the group.
Melody must have told him something. But seriously? Did she see nothing else to talk about apart from the fact that we weren’t related by blood?
“If you heard it from a reliable source, then it is probably true.” my answer was a bit rude, but I didn’t care. Why would he ask me a question like that in the first place?
As expected, the Prince’s face darkened dangerously, and he trained his gaze on me. “I see you are not dumb.”
“No one has ever said that I am.” I replied with a polite smile but again, I could see he was a bit angry and he was dropping his earlier façade real quick. Talk about a two faced bastard. I instantly did not like this guy. The way he was looking at me right now was as if he was looking at someone beneath him whom he couldn’t wait to strangle.
“I wonder why Kieran keeps staring at you.” Raiden commented and I looked in Kieran’s direction only to see his gaze openly fixed on me and then he stood up.
His eyes glowed an unnatural color as he started to approach me. I wasn’t the only one who saw it. Raiden and Grayson did too and they quickly stood up, panic reflecting in their eyes.
“Call the Royal guards and inform the King, Kieran is acting up again.” Grayson gave this order to the person beside him, and they quickly rushed out as if a calamity was about to happen.
This made my brows tighten in confusion as I stared at Kieran, whose eyes never left mine. He approached me.
That unnatural glow in his eyes strangely made me feel a pit in my stomach as if something was about to go wrong. I could feel it, that familiar feeling of dread as he approached me.
Everything seemed to stop and only the sound of his footsteps echoed in my ears. It felt so familiar. Because it sounded just like it did in the dream I had earlier today.
His footsteps continued to approach, and I could see his face, getting closer and closer. When he finally reached my table, he grabbed and pulled me into his arms, a possessive look in his eyes.
At the same time, about twenty guards rushed in and immediately surrounded us. They were ready to attack him.
I didn’t know what was going on or why my heart was racing so fast, but what I knew was, he smelled of a combination of different wines and alcohol, so heavenly. His scent, when it entered my nostrils smelled so delicious that I almost didn’t want to leave his embrace.
Everything happened so fast and I was stunned. I’m sure he could see the invisible question marks that popped above my head. I gave him a questioning look and he returned it with a smirk. I felt his finger lift my chin up as his eyes bore into mine, filled up with so much lust which perhaps was the effect of the spiked drink he had just consumed.
He rubbed my lips and I almost couldn’t take the heat and pressure that was starting to build up between my legs. His next word not only stunned me but had me frozen in shock.
“Mate!” he growled possessively in front of everyone. That single word made me come back to my senses and I found myself just shaking my head in denial.
“No!” I whispered. It couldn’t be. It just couldn’t be.
I wanted to run away from him, from everyone and everything, but he was holding me so tight in his embrace.
A frown appeared on his face and his fingers tightened around my chin. Everyone was looking, I could feel all of their gazes on me and hear the silent whispers as he leaned towards me until our foreheads touched and he let out a terrifying growl again.
“Mine!”
I flinched. He suddenly seemed so scary as if he would really hurt me if I denied it again.
‘Kira?’ I called desperately for my wolf, but she was quiet. I could feel her right there, she was right there but not responding to me and she was not responding to him either.
What’s going on? Is he really my mate? Or was this whole thing a misunderstanding which I truly hoped it was.
