Chapter 7 Danger Danger

Soraya's POV I briskly jumped in the opposite direction, avoiding the rogue's claws just in time. That took him by surprise, and I immediately took advantage of his disorientation. Square in the eye, the scrawny thing kept staring at me. I took one step back, dragging my feet in the mud. And before I could think of something else, the rogue let out a loud rumble and charged at me for the second time. But my body thought faster than my head could. I bucked up and jumped quickly, kicked it away and watched as it rammed itself into a tree trunk. It let out a ferocious yell. I was surprised about my potential. I reached for a wet branch from the ground and ignoring the loud thump of my heart. I drove the branch as hard as I could even though I knew it was too blunt to penetrate its skin, but the groan that followed was positive. Grateful for the mud, I drew out both claws and reached for its fur, pulling at it. With a small grunt, I pulled even harsher until its legs were above the ground. I let go with everything I had to give at that moment and watched it linger in the air for a millisecond before jumping, extending my other claw to it's now exposed neck in a clean slice. With that, I grabbed onto the wound and plunged it into the ground, splashing mud and water and rotten leaves. I watched the rogue heave on the ground then grow limp, now a ma*s of blood and muddy water and corpse, my chest heaving wildly. I'd only noticed that my face was twisted and broke a small, stiff laugh. My first victory… Suddenly, relief washed over me at the fact that it was dead. All my life, the years I'd spent being a slave wasn't a waste of time. I'd wake up every day and sneak out to study what would have put an end to my life had I been caught. The techniques of the warriors were formidable, if only I could learn them too. I got cuts and a few fractures trying to face them head on; I almost gave up when there was not one single one of them I could beat. But I was here today, with the bast*rd at my feet and my head practically in the clouds. I did it. My lips curled up into a wider grin and I could feel Paige's excitement churn. "Great job, Paige." I whispered back and took a few steps from the body. I ran one now muddied hand through my hair and was about to take one step forward when I heard shuffling in the trees. What was that? My ears perked up, alert at the sudden presence I felt. Water splashed at my feet and as soon as I tried to look up, there was another splash, a louder one that sent dirty water flying all over. My eyes narrowed at that and I took one step back, my right feet planted on the ground. Three identical rogues in front of me were spread out at angles that had to be to make sure I couldn't attack them at the same time. My eyes darted one to another, and I clenched my fist in both fear and hatred. For rogues, they were smart as hell. But then, they were mistaken to think that they could get rid of me easily. I didn't come all the way to lose my life. Moreso to miserly bast*rds like them. The ones in front of me were unlike the one I'd just ripped life from. They were taller and meaner with longer claws, and had literal death in their eyes. Their demeanour made something shift in my stomach. They would scare the sh*t out of anyone and they scared me, not because they were stronger than me but because I risked getting attacked by one if I focused on another. The fact that they were possibly stronger was something to consider too. But not today. Suddenly, I heard it. A loud, growling sound. My eyes widened at the sound of a roar, and I whipped around in surprise. Another rogue? Instead of a rogue, it was a wolf who didn't look like he was one of them. A very angry looking wolf. It stood menacingly at a spot, its black fur pricking up at its mane. My attention completely shifted from the rogues to the wolf now in front of me, and only now could I see the body without its mane. There were cuts on its torso with blood dripping from them, repelling even rain water. Its eyes were harsh and angry, but I could tell that he was exhausted. I squinted to rid my eyes of as much rain water as possible and to see clearly, I could see faded blotches of grey littering where most of the cuts were. I looked more closely at the cuts. The blood leaking from the areas left a weird purple residue. Was it poisoned? Mocking groans erupted from behind me and I finally looked back to meet the eyes of the rogue directly in front of me. Clenching even tighter, I let out a low growl and stood ready to charge at them in return. But they stood there doing nothing. Their attention had switched sides too, and in a moment they'd run past the mud and were now behind me. They had gone quiet, the only thing that could be heard were breathing and drops of rain hitting the ground. Why didn't they attack me? If they planned on attacking me from behind, the amount of them I'd wasted wondering right now should have killed me. I let go of my fist and turned around to meet the eyes of the wolf that I'd seen just moments ago. And with that were the bast*rds standing, surrounding the grey wolf and realisation set in. I didn't know what the wolf had done, but it was clear they weren't after me. Hell, they haven't been after me the whole time! Another grunt escaped my lips as I watched them draw back, and before I could think, they were charging at the roaring wolf with full speed. My body moved again, filled with rage. It has been poisoned. They let it close to the brink of death before attacking. Cowardly bast*rds! "Get away!" I jumped off the ground and in front of the injured being and growled in anger, pinning both legs to the ground before hitting the ground as hard as I could, blocking their movement. I growled again loudly, blinded at this point but I could make out their loud groans and following thuds. I wanted to growl again, but my knees buckled at that and an overwhelming sensation coursed through my body settling at my lower back. I couldn't describe what it felt like as my knees hit the ground. Pain? I didn't think so. It wasn't exactly pain, but it was eating away at my consciousness. I flipped both eyes open, watching the blurry rogues on the ground and turned slightly to see the black wolf staring down at me. I feel lightheaded…this wasn't supposed to be happening…I tried to cling onto my last bit of consciousness to no avail. The last thing I could see was the whole forest turning white and my whole body crashing to the ground.
