She shot a look at Monty who was frantically talking to his business partner and no longer interfering in her standoff with Vadim. His fingers were tugging his blond hair out of his signature style, a smear of drool coating his beard, and panic painting his features.
“Make it stop.” She looked to Vadim, “make it stop and I’ll come.”
“No. You’ll come now, or I’ll make the call to Cambridge, and I’ll make sure you get to watch Professor Carta’s downfall on international news stations while we’re on the jet going back home. He took what was mine. He deserves what is coming to him.”
“I am not yours and he didn’t take anything. I gave it to him freely.”
He moved closer to her until their toes were touching, “you are mine, like it or not Essence. The fact you so carelessly walked away from your family to let them suffer without a second thought makes me furious with you, but you are still my wife, and you will play your role. Get your f*****g s**t together or I will do it for you.”
“You’re a bastard.”
“And you’re a b***h. Look at us. The perfect couple.”
“Excuse me, sir,” Monty called out, his face a ghastly shade of white instead of his healthy tanned glow, “please. I didn’t know she was your wife. Please. You can’t do this. My entire life is invested in my company. I’ll have nothing left. Please. Call them off?”
“No.” He didn’t even give the man a glance, his eyes focused intently on Essence.
As Monty crumpled to the floor behind her after the shove of a security agent, she felt tears streaming down her face as she wordlessly followed the team out of the hotel.
Sliding into the back of the limo she stifled a sob against her fist and closed her eyes. “Why? It was bad enough you humiliated me in front of all my peers and my colleagues but to do such a thing to him. You’ve made me the laughingstock in my world but why punish him? How could you?”
“Because I can.”
“You did not need to go so far. You wiped him out?”
“He has nothing now. I think it’s only fair. He did put his d**k in my wife after all.”
She wanted to kick him in the balls. “I am not your wife!” she screamed the last word unable to stop herself before curling back into the seat as he turned and glowered at her. There it was. The icy cold stare he fixed on her was chilling.
Once as a child on a field trip to the zoo with her boarding school, she found herself entranced by a King Cobra. Its eyes were black and at the time, with her nine-year-old overactive imagination, she was certain Vadim must have been part cobra. Now, she decided the snake’s eyes were decidedly warmer.
“Did you really think you’d be able to live a life without repaying your grandfather for the kindness he gave you?”
“What f*****g kindness?” she turned furious eyes at him, hot angry tears spilling down her cheeks. “Every solitary day of my life from the time I was six until I was twenty-one being made to feel as an afterthought in his family. The only, and I mean the only reason, he remembered I existed was because Eliska screwed up by getting videoed f*****g three men while doing drugs. Jesus, if she hadn’t been caught, the pair of you would be shacked up, happily married and on baby number twelve.”
“Wrong.”
“Wrong?”
“I would never have married her. I made sure of it.”
His words confused her. “What?”
“Who do you think got all the evidence on Eliska?”
“What?” she stared at him in shock, her breath increasingly growing shallower. “Why?”
“Because the little w***e had it in her mind, she wanted me, and she was going to do whatever it took to get me. I was able to evade her for years and wasn’t about to get trapped with her for life. I did what I needed to do so I could get close enough to get all the dirt I could to escape her. I might have embellished part of it as well to put your grandfather well and truly off her wretched scent.”
“You didn’t want to marry her? Why not tell him you didn’t want to? Why humiliate her?”
“Because Eliska doesn’t take no for an answer. Your grandfather was starting to believe it was a good match. I needed to convince him otherwise.”
“She was convinced you cared! You never loved her? You told her you loved her. She said so.”
“She lied,” he gave a hapless shrug as he tugged on the cuffs of his shirt beneath his coat. “Your grandfather cannot pass the business onto me and frankly, I don’t need or want his business. My grandfather’s company was turned over to me at the age of thirty, not a couple of months after you left. Your grandfather might be number two on the billionaire list, I am a hair off being the first trillionaire on the f*****g planet. I didn’t get here by playing nice. Do you really think I need your grandfather’s businesses? No. I love and respect him because he took me in and kept my uncles from stealing my fortune. When the vultures circled following my family’s death, he took the buzzards out one by one and taught me everything I needed to know about my father’s business while maintaining his own companies. He ran two organizations until I was old enough to take my family’s legacy and he never complained a single day for doing it. All he asked of me in return was to ensure his company stayed with Angevin blood when the time came for him to step down and to give him an heir which holds his name.”
“Which is why he wants you to marry one of us.”
“Not one of you. You. Period. I made sure he didn’t pick the other two.”
“It’s dumb and archaic.”
“Get over it. We have a kid. The kid gets named heir of Angevin. I will keep it running and in trust for the kid until he’s of age and then my debt to your grandfather is paid.”
“It’s not what I want.”
“Nobody gives a flying f**k what you want,” he shrugged as if he believed his words.
“If I’m going to have a child it’s going to be with a man I do not loathe and certainly not with a man who thinks so little of me.” Her fists were clenched so tight her fingernails were cutting into her palms.
“Would you like me to lie to you like I did your sister and tell you I like you? Would it make you feel better when we f**k so you don’t feel so dirty?” he looked her over, “though showing up to a fundraiser still reeking of s*x and covered in your boyfriends jizz isn’t exactly clean now is it?”
She blushed a furious shade, her ears burning with humiliation. “How?”
“I found you seven days ago, Essence. Do you think I don’t have cameras all over your shitty little apartment?”
She gagged at the thought. “You cannot be serious.”
“Also, you’re a decent singer in the shower but it’s a waste of water and resources to take thirty-minute showers and I did also notice your poor cooking skills. Living on your own hasn’t improved them.”
“Why are you doing this to me?”
“Because you’ve wasted my time. I could have been free from the contract by now.”
She swallowed the lump. “Free how?”
“To pursue a relationship I actually want,” he said bluntly.
“There is a woman you want to be with?”
“Yes.”
“Then marry her!” she threw her hands up in irritation.
“I want to. See, here is the thing, Essence. I am not permitted to do anything until I complete my obligations. I have never been able to tell the person I care for how I feel or to even have a single f*****g date with her. The minute my contractual obligations are out of the way, I’m going to court the hell out of her and make her realize how much she means to me without all the bullshit of contracts and duty in the way. So first, we make a baby. Then we get divorced. Then I remarry the woman of my f*****g dreams.”
“You swear a lot,” she interrupted him rudely.
“Get used to it.” He was looking at his phone and then back to her, “why on earth were you f*****g Monty Short? He’s a daft twat.”
“He.” She started to protest his words. “I love him.”
He pulled a face of utter revulsion. “Oh, come on. You love him? Why? He can’t hold a serious conversation without trying to crack a stupid joke. He is incapable of being thoughtful. While he can be considered charming, his business partner is the brains behind the organization. Also, do not for one minute tell me you thought what he did in bed was exciting. I watched today’s little romp and couldn’t believe you liked his bullshit. He didn’t listen to your wants, and he came so fast it was over before it started. You yourself asked where the fun was to be had in his desire for a quick f**k. You only came because you played with yourself while he f****d you.”
“You watched me have s*x?” Despite him saying he put cameras she didn’t think he meant he watched them. Was there no decency in the man at all? She was aghast staring at him.
“Yes.” He didn’t look away from her. “Does it bother you I already know your orgasm face before I personally give it to you?”
She ignored the latter part of his comment, her heart squeezing with the words he spoke. “You violated my privacy in the most intimate of ways! How could you?”
“Sweetheart, you have nothing to get bent out of shape over. It wasn’t all that revolutionary and not nearly as revolting as any of the things I’ve seen your sister do. Monty has extremely limited stamina and it’s clear he’s watched a couple of pornos featuring a dom and a sub. He mistakenly thinks he’s a version of dominant male but he’s a wannabe at best. He couldn’t dominate a blow-up doll and do it right. I’m still trying to figure out how his tiny little d**k managed to get you from behind. I mean your butt is pretty big.”
“Enough!” She was panting with the humiliation. “Where is your propriety?”
“I don’t have any. If you’d paid attention at all growing up, you would know this. Instead, you avoided me like the plague apparently because I’m scary.” He wiggled his fingers in her face mockingly. “Boo.”
“Ugh!” she screamed angrily and punched the chair in front of her.
“The minute we’re airborne you’re to take a shower in the jet. I want his stench off you.” He shook his head at her as he switched from his teasing, “covering you in his come like a dog pissing on a hydrant. Again, probably something he watched in a porno and thought powerful. Idiot.”
The derisive twist to his lips as he looked at his phone no longer affording her his attention made her sick. The man was deranged.
