CHAPTER 5

Vittoria's POV I'm still unsure of what's happening. So I decided to attend all my classes to see if things will happen the way they did before. Though I'm not sure if they will really prove anything. All the classes are the same. In fact, I even have the same schedule sheet. "Athena?" I tried to call her out again but, as usual, I couldn't even feel her. Am I really wolfless now? I felt cold at that realization... Is it the price I had to pay for being given another chance to live? But I didn't even ask for this! Maybe I should research it? I couldn't ask anyone but surely there are books about it. Or not? Argh. This is driving me insane! I sighed as I watched my classmates leave the room. Some of them were whispering to each other before looking at me, then laughing like the lunatics that they are. I remember them. They set up a booby trap for me as I was about to go home. I ended up with mud mixed with other filth all over my body when I walked under a tree. Now all I have to do is to avoid that same trail, right? This should have been easy since I already knew what would happen beforehand. At least it gives me an advantage. I stood up when I was left alone. I swiftly made my way out of the university gate. I need to take a longer route home to avoid the trap that they set up for me, so I need to hurry. But I stopped when I saw a group of she-wolves in front of me. Oh no... Don't tell me there's some kind of danger waiting for me wherever I go. "Look what we have here..." one of them sneered at me before another she-wolf, the one who looked like their leader, walked around me in circles. She's looking at me from head to toe in a mocking way. "You clearly don't belong here. Your filthy scent ruins the atmosphere." one of the girls behind her spat. Seriously? What's with my scent? Why is everyone bothered by it? And can't they really come up with a better tirade? Something that has nothing to do with my scent? "I don't know what you're talking about," I answered. "Stop," the leader said when we heard a growl from her underlings, who looked ready to attack me. What are they going to do now? This has never happened before so I don't know how to deal with it. Should I leave them? Run? But I promised myself to be a stronger Omega this time around... "She can actually have a purpose," she grinned, which pulled me out of my thoughts. Purpose? "What is your name?" I heard her ask, one of her eyebrows c****d up. "Vittoria," I answered with my head held high. I was surprised when I didn't even stutter. I won't allow myself to bow down to them anymore. They may be privileged to be born with higher-ranked parents, but that doesn't give them the right to maltreat ordinary werewolves. "Do you even know who I am?" she asked me again. She narrowed her eyes at me. I feel like she would kill me if she didn't like my answer. One of her eyebrows arched up when I didn't say anything. "I'm Leila, the only daughter of the Blood Moon Alpha!" she hissed. "I know," I coldly stated. Yes, I already know who she is. How can I forget her? I could die a thousand deaths and would still remember her face. Her name. Curse her! A daughter of an Alpha. Not just an ordinary alpha, but an alpha of one of the strongest packs in our kingdom. That is why she acts so entitled. She is one of the she-wolves who bullied me the worst in my past life. What can I do to get back at her? Surely not much now that I don't have Athena with me. I couldn't even fight her. Not that I can do much even with Athena around. She is an Alpha's daughter, while I'm an Omega who hasn't even trained for combat. Maybe I should try to consider that. I should learn how to defend myself, wolfless or not. "So you know me? But you still had the guts to act like you didn't care who I am?" she mocked. "Why should I care?" I asked while still trying to sound innocent. I just realized that I liked the annoyed look on her face. "How stupid of you to come here without even knowing what you're getting yourself into?" she snapped. Her underlings sneered. "I just came here to study," I answered in a low but clear voice. "Hah! You've got some nerves! Let's see how far you'll go." she smirked. I noticed how they were communicating through their mind link. Are they now plotting my murder? Should I start running? But surprisingly, I don't even feel scared. Perhaps they had done every unthinkable way of torturing me before and this didn't surprise me anymore. What was the worst that they had done to me? Enslave me? Beat me to a pulp? What else? A familiar sandalwood scent suddenly caught my senses, momentarily distracting me from my tormentors. He's here. Zander is here! I breathed in deeply, then looked in the direction where his scent was coming from. Our gazes met once again. Just like earlier, his eyes were cold as ice. What is he doing here? Is he going to help me? "Oh no..." I heard a loud gasp from one of the she-wolves. I looked at them and saw that they were also aware of my mate's presence. They were all looking at him. I took that as a chance to get away from them. I know that I said I wanted to be stronger, but stronger doesn't always equate to fighting. I am not that foolish. What can I do against a group of five she-wolves? Clearly nothing. They will just beat the s**t out of me and my so-called mate would probably just watch from a distance. For now, the best option is to get away from them... *** Zander's POV I watched her move swiftly away from Leila's group while their attention was on me. Sneaky little wolf. Let's see how far she goes... "You should have helped her!" Logan growled inside my head. "Our presence did help her," I answered him quietly. "Zander! What are you doing there? Do you want to join us?" one of them asked seductively. My insides churned in disgust. I wanted to leave them right then and there, but I waited for the omega to disappear into the woods. I had to make sure that she at least had gotten far enough. That's the least I could do for her. "You can do so much more!" my wolf growled. "You just chose not to!" I didn't have anything to say to that, so I chose to keep my mouth shut. He was right. I can't argue with that. "Come on!" the she-wolf insisted, but I just glared at her. They kept on trying to lure me except for the Alpha's daughter. She had her claws set on Lucas, but she was still eyeing me, completely forgetting about their prey. When I made sure that the omega had already gotten away, I turned on my way to our pack without saying a single word to the group. "Hey! Zander!" one of them called, but I ignored her completely. My head is filled with thoughts about my little mate. What was the moon goddess thinking when she paired me with that helpless creature? Did she really think that I would accept her? With the kind of situation I was in, there was no way for me to have a mate. Especially not an Omega who couldn't even protect herself. She'd only be a liability to me. "The Alpha wants to talk to you." one of our soldiers told me as soon as I stepped inside our territory. Damn. I just wanted to go straight to my room and lock myself there for the rest of the night. But I couldn't bend my father's commands. I have to go and see him. I nodded before turning on my heels to go to my father's office. My jaw clenched and my face hardened as I slowly approached his door. What could this be all about? Did he sense that I had found my mate already? I certainly hope that it's not the case. I knocked twice before pushing the door open. My eyes immediately fell on his gaze. I couldn't read anything on his face, as usual. I remained stoic as well while I stood in front of him. "Alpha." I bowed down a little. Even if he is my father, I don't receive any kind of special treatment, especially from him. I was treated like a regular warrior, or most of the time worse than how they are normally treated. "What can I do for you?" I asked. "Don't you have anything useful to report to me?! You have been studying in that school with that clumsy prince for what? Two years now and you still haven't found any of his weaknesses!" he growled, his loud voice shaking the whole room. "Sorry Alpha," I told him in a flat tone. "I don't need your apologies! I need information about them!" he growled. If his office isn't soundproofed, I'm sure that his voice will shake the whole pack's territory. "I don't think they have any weaknesses. They are Lycans and members of the royal family." I said in a low voice. Honestly, even if I found out their weakness, I don't think I would tell him. In a blink, I found myself pinned on the wall. My father had his large hand wrapped around my neck as he slammed my back into the concrete. "That's impossible!" he growled. His claws started to sink into my skin but I just ignored it. I am so used to getting hurt that it doesn't bother me anymore. It's nothing compared to what I had to go through at his hands. He was too blinded with envy. That's why he couldn't accept the truth. Lycans are stronger, but that's not the only reason why they deserve to rule this kingdom. They have a keen sense of leadership. They are also more logical compared to werewolves, who are almost always ruled by instincts. My jaw clenched as I stared at my father's furious eyes. "I have been spying on him for a while, Alpha. I can definitely tell that we need more than what we have to be able to defeat them." I tried to make him see beyond reason. "You're such a useless piece of s**t!" he growled before slamming my body on the table. I hissed when my back hit the sharp corner. I looked at him with the same intensity. I am so fed up with him! All my life, he has been trying to control me. He never treated me like a son. For him, I was a pawn that he could use as he deemed fit. I hated him to the core! "Why are you looking at me like that? Do you think you can take me now?!" he roared in a beastly voice. His eyes flickered in a different color. It can only mean one thing. His beast is trying to take over. But I'm not afraid of him anymore. I am willing to die fighting than go on like this! I am sick and tired of my life! I've never tried to go against his will but I think it's high time to do that! He jumped and shifted mid-air. His pure black coat covered his body and his eyes turned a golden color with specks of blue. I swiftly moved to dodge his attack. He snarled when he looked at me, baring his long canines protruding over his lower jaw. Too bad he can't intimidate me with that anymore. "You are worthless, just like how I expected you to be! I should just have killed you before you were even born!" he growled through our mind link. I know that he didn't love me as he should, but it still hurt to hear him say that straight to my face. I gritted my teeth as I growled back at him. I hated him more. Gone was the boy who longed for his approval, the boy who was willing to do anything just to have a taste of his father's love and affection. I wasn't the same kid anymore. That boy died a long time ago. All that's left within me is hatred. I hated this man, my own father, to the bones. He jumped to attack me again. This time, I had no plan to dodge. I shifted to my beast, which looked just like his. He tackled me to the ground but I quickly latched my canines on the soft spot on his shoulder. His blood seeped through my mouth as I tore off a chunk of his flesh with my teeth. He howled in pain and anger before I felt his claws ripping into the flesh on my stomach. I kicked him with my hind feet to get him off of me. I snarled when I got back into my fighting stance. We circled against each other. My blood started to trickle down to the floor but I am eager to end this now. No matter what happens tonight, I would gladly accept it. If I die fighting for my freedom, then so be it. And if I killed my own father in the middle of this fight, I would also accept it. There's no other way to end this vicious cycle anymore. One of us has to die. "Do you seriously think that you can take me down now?" he scoffed through our mind link. "You must be delusional!" he started laughing manically. "You can never defeat me!" I leaped up to attack him, aiming for his neck this time, but he quickly jumped over me, then landed forcefully on my back. The tips of his claws sunk under my skin painfully. He grabbed the back of my neck with his teeth, then flung me across the room! I landed on the shelf against his wall. Its contents dropped on me due to the impact. I groaned when something hard fell on my head. Damn. I didn't expect the old guy to still be this strong. I think I already know the conclusion of this fight. But I will gladly face it. I stood back to my feet. I won't back down. I will give him a good fight to the end! We pounced against each other for the next few minutes, leaving both of us bloodied and gasping for air. I got more injuries than him. I should've expected this since he was a seasoned warrior as well as an Alpha. But I was still able to injure him. His shoulder is bleeding and I'm sure I broke some bones on his face, while I got a broken limb and a broken rib or two for sure. I limped as I got up from the floor. "Let's finish him," Logan growled. For the first time, I agree with him completely. I'm still not giving up. I will not give up until my last breath. I braced myself as he lunged into me one more time...
