"I'll take care of those Nolan, just bring Krayol home."
Nolan stopped from picking up the dishes.
"No, I'm fine Libeth. I can go home alone. Besides, Nolan must be tired and busy." I glanced at him.
"Tatapusin ko lang ang mga ito." (I'll just finish this) his reply and glanced at me.
"No, I'm really alright. I already texted Igme to pick me up here."
"Ihahatid na kita." (I'll go with you) he said and turned away.
"It's alright senyorita. You cannot walk because of your sprained foot and Nolan will be with you to help."
"No, I'm absolutely fine." I peeked on his back while he's doing the dishes.
I really wanted, but it's too obvious. And I might run out of breath again if he'd bring me home.
The truth was, I did not want him to bring me home because Lyra was waiting for me. And if they saw my "Epic failed" plan, they would surely teasing me the whole night.
"Your Mom will probably get mad at me senyorita, because of what happened to you."
"Why my Mom will get mad at you? When I was at fault."
"Even if that's the case senyorita Krayol. You are still here in our premises when you got into an accident."
"This is nothing but simple sprain." I briefly glimpsed to Nolan, who just seemed to be quiet listening to us.
"I'm still in trouble with your Dad and Mom."
"Don't worry, my parents aren't yet at home." I laughed silently.
When I saw our huge house I suddenly felt sad. Nolan and I did not even had time to talk, even a single conversation.
"Thank you, Igme. I'll take care of everything, don't worry about my Mom and Dad."
"Ako na ang bubuhat sa kanya." (I'll carry her inside)
I was about to refuse but Nolan was on my door side. I could actually walk, in fact it was not really hurt anymore. Yes, it hurt at first but now, the pain had gone. I bit my lips when he lifted me out of the car.
"Seriously I can walk." I said weakly. His presence was really too overwhelming.
"Lagyan mo ng mainit na bimpo para hindi na mamaga pa. O pagkatapos ng ilang araw." (Put a warm towel to stop the swelling or after a few days.)
"Thank you."
"Krayol!!" my eyes shut automatically when I heard Quinna's irriatating voice.
"What happened?"
"I got sprained ankle." rolling my eyes at them.
"Ohh, I see.."
Nolan stopped for a moment when a house helper rushed to us. And also my friends.
"Put me down."
"Just bring her upstairs. In her bedroom."
I glared Lyra. "No, I'm fine here."
"Nasaan ang kwarto mo?" (Where's your room?)
I gaped at his question and couldn't formulate the answer.
"The first door, it's her room." Shilin had answered for me.
Nolan turned and I felt again our movement. I was back to myself when we're in the middle of the stairs. And also I could hear the snickering of my friends just after we left them there.
Shilin opened the door for us. When finally Nolan put me down on my bed, that's the time I got back my normal breathing.
"Thank you, Nolan."
"Walang anuman." (You're welcome) he looked at my friends who followed us here. "Pwede nyo siyang ikuha ng mainit na pamunas para malagyan na kaagad ang paa niya ng hindi na mamaga." (You can get her a hot towelfor her ankle to stop it from swelling.)
"Okay." Quinna nodded at him. As she told the house helper to get me a warm towel.
"Thank you for helping out our friend."
He just nodded but stil all eyes on me. "Walang anuman. Mauuna na ako.. senyorita Krayol." (No problem, I'll go ahead.. senyorita Krayol.)
"Thanks again."
When Nolan had gone, my friends started asking me questions. It looked like I could not rest early today.
"Girls are you sure, you couldn't extend your stay here?"
"I hate it!" Quinna pouted.
"If we're not going for a vacation in Japan. I will stay here with you." Lyra smiled at me.
"How about you Shilin?"
"There is an emergency in the bar."
"Alright. If that's the case."
"Don't me Krayol. We all know, you weren't feel bad. In the first place you don't want us here!" Lyra pouted like a child.
"That's not true. Of course, I want to celebrate Christmas with you girls." I knitted my forehead.
"I really don't want to go!"
Lyra just rolled her eyes. While Shilin shrugged off.
The girls went home that day. I was though expecting to spend Christmas with my friends but sad to say they had to go.
I did not explore around after my friends had left, I just stayed here to rest my feet. It was not hurt like the first day, and I didn't even bother to tell my parents about it.
It was only a few hours later when I received a text messages from Shilin, telling me she got home safe in Manila. And then from the other girls too.
Lazily I got up from my bed, I did not want to eat dinner with my parents but they insisted. Minerva knocked on my door thrice only to say that the table was waiting.
I was only a few steps away from our long table when I heard Dad's laughter along with his name. I immediately turned my back to my room but Mom called me and made me halted.
I blew a breath before I turned and chanted "I can do it!" a plenty of times when my eyes unintentionally flicked on him.
"It's a good thing you decided to come down, hija." Mommy smiled at me.
"Yes Mom, and you did not say that we have a visitor." I looked down at my pajamas. I did not bother to change, I really had no plans on going down coz I was too sleepy.
"Oh sorry, about that we forgot to tell you." Mom showcased her bright smile.
I sat in my seat across to his chair.
"This is Nolan. Libeth and Igme's nephew. And he's been working for us for a few years now."
"Why is he here?"
"Krayol!" mom called out.
"Why?" I creased my forehead.
Dad cleared his throat. "Nolan is here for our business. We have acquired new farm of sugar apple with his help. And we decided to make him the person to supervise our new business."
"I see. Nice meeting you, Nolan." I sweetly smiled at him. He only nodded at me.
We started the dinner. I ate a little tonight, I lost my appetite hearing them talking about politics and business. I literally spent two hours almost yawning at them and feeling hungry again after the long supper.
I really wanted to leave them. Why when my eyes dropped to Mom, my face contourted at her and she just gave me a glare, making me stay in my seat.
Though I did not want to be acted like an insolent daughter but I was really sleepy now. So I left them in the living room after excusing myself.
I was a bit disappointed of him. I didn't know he's my parents puppet. Because he never opposed with them, he just agreed at everything my parents words. I thought he was just a normal employee in our hacienda.
As a little girl, I dreamed about for a simple man to being my first boyfriend. I was born and grew up here in Puli so I was not surprised at the simple lives of the people here and even wished of experiencing a simple life like what they were having.
But when I started studying in Manila, I just realized that the men in Manila were way more attractive than here. So I had my fair share of boys until I met Emjei. He's my only boyfriend who lasted for two long years.
I was hooked because of his dreams. He did not have a rich family. His father came from a poor family while his Mom was just an average woman. It's just that his parents used their degree to achive their dreams. And now, they have a nurse and engineer in the US of A.
"Still sleeping princess?"
"Yes, daddy." closing again my eyes. "It's a bit too early."
"Your Mom and I will be leaving soon."
My smile formed a little when I felt his hand brushing my tangled hair.
"Be safe, Daddy. Kisses Mommy for me." couldn't open my eyes coz I was really really sleepy.
"Wake up princess, you have to get up and fix yourself. Remember what I have said last night?" he paused. "We have new acquired property, and I will be delighted to send you there to see it for yourself."
"I'm not fond of sugar apple." I peeked from my one eye.
"Just go there. It supposed to be Rui but then he wasn't here yet. And your Mommy and I will need to attend some meetings in town. And Nolan will be here in a minute to pick you up."
"Nolan? Okay." when my brain had processed the name he mentioned. That's when I found myself sitting on my bed abruptly. "Nolan? Nolan will be here in any minute?"
"Yes. He will accompany you to the farm. And I'm expecting you to be nice with him. He's a good man, and I trusted him, even your Mom."
"Wait Dad! Why me? What I'm going to do there?"
"You will soon take over our business, you and Rui. And your Mom agreed with me. That the earlier the better for the both of you to be familiar with our business."
"But Daddy..?!"
"No buts Krayol Ginger, get up now and get dressed." Daddy stood up from sitting on my bed.
"Okay." I sighed in defeat.
He leaned and kissed my forehead. "Just give it a try, Krayol."
"Alright. I'll do my best."
He nodded and left my room. I rushed out of my bed and done my self.
I had changed my clothes for the second time but still not satisfied. It felt like something was wrong with my clothes. With a knock on my door, I jumped a little and sighed deeply leaving my room.
I felt nervous when I saw his back, he was facing our huge door. When I got near him, he was still busied on his phone.
"Are we leaving now?" asking him a bit agitated.
He slowly turned his back to face me as his eyes traveled down my whole. He again, talked to his phone then ended the call.
"Pwede kang magsuot ng sombrero. Mainit sa pupuntahan natin." (You can wear a hat, we're going to a hot location.)
"I'm fine." smiling at him. "Let's go?"
I was peeking at his glorious silently while we're driving to the farm. He only wore a simple shirt but his muscled body was perfectly molded in that shirt. Eveytime he made a move, I think his arms were more getting harder.
I reached for the bottled water on the dashboard and drank on it. I think the weather instantly had a climate change. I feel so hot!
I just looked out the window and stayed my eyes there, before he could notice my stare at him.
When he pulled over into a two-storey house. My eyes wandered and almost shrieked with the surroundings. Even here, outside of this house there were few of sugar apple and soursop trees.
I got out the car before he could open my door for me. Three men immediately rushed to us and greeted him.
He also introduced me to them and the three men addressed me as "Senyorita Krayol" again. Then they had talked for a few minutes. So I approached those some sugar apple trees that took my attention earlier. Later I found him behind me saying that we're ready to go.
"Diretso na tayo sa taniman bago pa tumaas ang araw." (We're heading straight to the field before the sun rises)
"Show me the way." his forehead knitted why a smile crept on my lips. "Tara na." (Let's go.)
I walked first and saw him matching my stride.
"Bakit ngayon lang kita nakita dito?" (Why you look like a new face here?) I asked him in the middle of our walk.
He looked at me. "Ilang taon pa lang akong nagtatrabaho sa hacienda." (I've been working for a few years here in hacienda.)
"Umuuwi naman ako dito every Christmas pero ngayon lang talaga kita nakita. Never pa nga kita nakita sa bahay kahit pa palagi namang may handaan kapag ganong okasyon." (I'm coming here every Christmas but I never noticed you. I have never saw you at home even we oftenly have gatherings during those ocassions.)
"Hindi pa ako nakakadalo sa mga handaan sa hacienda." (I have never been to the hacienda whenever there was an ocassion.)
"Kaya pala hindi pa tayo nagkita noon." (Oh really, why I never met you before.)
"Siguro." (Maybe)
"Pero madalas na tayong magkakasama at magkikita." (But we will oftenly seeing each other now.) I grinned at him. "I will start working with you and will transfer school here next year."
I noticed that he whispered in between but I did not hear it enough. I just rolled my eyes at him.
We stopped walking and saw the wide open field in where the sugar apple scattered around. And those trees were really at the peak of its fruits.
The three men who followed us had explained about the farm that I hardly understand. Daddy said, I just needed to be familiar with this business but he did not say to took this too seriously.
I was following them while we supervised the entire plantation. And I think the sugar apple would be soon ready for harvest time, based on their sizes and the sweet smell of the whole place.
I got stumbled and a sting of pain ripped through my limbed. And pouted at the gap that the men doing when I coudn't make a move. He did not even notice that I was not behind them anymore.
Our distance went wider because of my slow movement. I sighed at my helpless situation, probably couldn't continue walking with them around the plantation. When I even had walked for only half an hour.
