“I see you have lost none of your vigour, sir,” Rebecca said. Sir Gawain stepped into the bath. The servant girl remained close by, ready to bring more hot water if required. She kept her gaze fixed upon the floor, whether for modesty or as a mark of respect, Hansel found it difficult to say. He sympathised with her predicament. Faced with such blatant debauchery, it was difficult to know how to behave. He feared to give offence; yet he could not openly enter into the spirit of such lechery. “Wash me, dear girls,” Sir Gawain said.
