Hannah looked at Liam with frustration. "I've had enough, Liam. You're on your feet, and our contract is over. I can't keep doing this. I want a divorce."
Liam gripped her shoulder tightly and said, "You are mine, and you are not going anywhere." His voice was very deep and quiet. "Hannah, there is no way I am going to give you a divorce. Not even before we have a baby. You are going to live with me, and there will be no divorce. Forget it," he said and released her.
Harshly, Hannah glared at him with tears in her eyes and rushed into the bathroom. Before he could reach her, she locked the door from inside. "I am going to get away from Liam. I'm not going to stay here," she thought to herself.
She took a quick bath and hurried downstairs. It was time for her to do her duties in the mansion and then go to work. Next, she prepared breakfast and served it to all the family members sitting at the dining table. After everyone left, she ate her breakfast and looked at her watch. "It's already past 10. What? I'm going to be late for the office."
She rushed to her room, grabbed her bag, and hurried to the exit. As she was walking in a hurry, she collided with someone but managed to balance herself before falling. It was Mike, Liam's cousin and the second eldest son of the Miller family and the managing director of the Miller Corporation.
"Hi, Hannah. Where are you going in such a hurry? It's past 10. I think you are late for your office," Mike said with a smile. Hannah nodded and, without replying, started to walk away, but Mike grabbed her wrist and stopped her. "Wait, I'm going to the company. Come with me." Before she could deny his offer, she thought it would be better to go with Mike since he is the managing director of the company. She hadn't been able to get a taxi on time, and she would be getting more and more late. She had to face the penalty if she was late again. So, she decided to go with Mike.
"Fine, I'm coming with you," she said. She sat in his luxurious Mercedes, and they both drove off towards the company. The ride was quiet for a while until Mike spoke up. "You look stressed, Hannah. Is everything okay?" Mike asked, glancing at her. Hannah sighed. "It's complicated, Mike. Things at home are really difficult right now." Mike nodded understandingly. "If you ever need to talk, I'm here."
Hannah managed a small smile. "Thank you, Mike. That means a lot." Mike smiled back. "Anytime, Hannah. We all go through tough times." They arrived at the company, and Hannah quickly got out of the car. "Thanks for the ride, Mike. I really appreciate it."
Mike started to walk with Hannah into the office, but Hannah stopped him. "Uh, wait. Wait here, please. I don't want you to walk with me. I don't want employees in the office talking about us. So, can you please just leave me here? Can we go separately?"
Mike nodded and said, "Okay, fine." He stopped by his car, and Hannah rushed into the office.
She barely had time to sit at her desk when a file was slammed down in front of her. Maria, the manager, appeared, looking furious. "What's the time, Hannah? You are very irresponsible. You came late again today. If this keeps happening, I will get you fired from this company!" she shouted.
Every employee stopped their work and looked at Hannah. She felt embarrassed and lowered her head. Hannah worked as a clerk in the HR department at Miller Corporation. No one knew about her marriage to Liam, and she hadn't told anyone. Hannah looked at Maria and then lowered her gaze. "Sorry, Miss Maria. This won't happen again. I'll be on time next time."
Maria rolled her eyes. "You better be on time. And look at these files. There are so many mistakes, you stupid girl. I told you to correct them, but there are still errors. Go and get it done right now. I want this within an hour. Do you understand?" Maria said harshly, then walked away. Hannah sighed loudly and started going through the files. It was a daily routine for her—getting bullied and shouted at by everyone.
As she worked, she thought about how hard her life had become. She was tired of the constant pressure and humiliation. Her mind wandered to Liam and the problems at home. She wished she could find a way out of this situation.
A co-worker, Sam, walked by and noticed her distress. "Hey, Hannah. Are you okay?" he asked gently.Hannah forced a small smile. "I'm fine, Sam. Just a rough morning."Sam nodded sympathetically. "If you need any help with those files, let me know." "Thanks, Sam. I appreciate it," Hannah replied, feeling a bit better knowing someone cared.
Time passed quickly, and Hannah managed to correct all the errors. She took the files to Maria's office, feeling a mix of nervousness and relief. She knocked on the door and entered when Maria called her in. "Here are the corrected files, Miss Maria," Hannah said, placing them on the desk.
Maria glanced at them briefly and nodded. "Good. Make sure this doesn't happen again," she said curtly. "Yes, Miss Maria," Hannah replied, then left the office.
She came back to her desk, feeling a bit better after handling the files. Suddenly, her phone rang. As soon as she saw the number, her heart raced. She got off her seat and rushed towards the empty hallway.
"Have you gone mad? Why are you calling me at this time? What if someone finds out that you are back on your feet?" she whispered urgently into the phone. Liam didn’t seem to care about her concerns. "I want you back home within an hour. Just come back. And if you're late, you will face the worst. Got that?" He was sounding angry and then hung up. His voice was dangerous.
Hannah stared at her phone with wide eyes. It looked like she was going to lose her job today. But if she didn’t go as Liam wished, she was sure she might face something even worse. She quickly packed her stuff and wrote a leave application, mentioning that she was not feeling well. She left the office in a hurry.
As she stepped outside, she coincidentally found Mike standing on the other side of the road. "Hey, where are you going?" Mike asked, noticing her hurried pace. "Back home. I forgot some files at the mansion," Hannah lied quickly.
Mike looked thoughtful and then said, "Okay, come with me. I am still going towards the mansion to get Grandma for the office. Today, she is going to make an important announcement." Hannah nodded and said, "Okay." She checked her Uber app but saw that there were no taxis nearby. She took the chance and got into Mike’s car, and they drove towards the mansion.
They drove in silence for a few more minutes until they reached the mansion. Mike parked the car and turned to Hannah. "Do you need any help with the files?" Hannah shook her head. "No, I got it. Thanks, Mike."
She quickly got out of the car and hurried inside. Her heart pounded as she walked towards their room where she knew Liam would be waiting. She found him sitting on the couch, looking impatient. "You're late," Liam said coldly, not even looking up from his phone. Hannah took a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I came as fast as I could." Liam stood up and walked towards her, his eyes dark with anger. "You think 'sorry' is enough? I told you to be here within an hour." Hannah felt her fear rising but tried to stay calm. "I did my best, Liam. I even left work early."
Liam grabbed her arm roughly. "Don't make excuses. You're lucky I'm not in the mood to punish you today. But remember, you owe me.”
“But you deserve a punishment and what you did today, what the hell is going on between you and Mike?”
“TELL ME!!”
