“I don’t really understand what you are talking about. You are telling me that you have met a dragon and you have survived that entire encounter with only your Jeep being hold all over the way over a tree and you had to tell the investigators that it was a tornado? In Seattle? And what work are you talking about? Dragons don’t come to earth for any kind of work. As far as I understand that,” Pariah said and I could see that it was really taxing on her and I was almost wearing her out.
“According to him, this is a place for the vilest of creatures who take refuge in this particular land because the magic on earth is non existent. And he also told me that he’s hunting those criminals. The Wyvern was one of those and it was the reason that he was going to take them for rehabilitation or something on his own realm.”
“The fact that you have survived an encounter with a dragon is miraculous. When you told me that a dragon did it, I was forced to a bit overwhelmed by that because we have not heard of Dragons coming to earth and who is this guy that you spoke about?”
“He told me that his name was something very weird. He told that his name was Lord Xervanquest and something unpronounceable. I am really sorry but that is something that my tongue is never going to be able to pronounce,” I shrugged and Pariah nodded.
“Lord? Are you sure of that? And not Arbitrator?”
“No he called himself Lord. And he also told me that calling him Lord was the only way that I should be greeting him. Since I was what did it say mongrel and he needed to be mentioned with proper respect.” My blood boiled at that conversation. b****y entitled fucker!
“According to the information that I have gathered from all the magical creatures that I have so far encountered all that dragons rarely came to earth and they considered this land, I mean Earth to be a purgatory of sorts. At least for themselves. Now that might be the reason of this influx.”
I was looking at all the diagrams and the charts that were in this room and they did not tell me something which I would understand. I had come to know from Damas that a basic knowledge of my own anatomy was very necessary because that would give the power to help me heal myself if I focused on. But these were far too advanced even for me. There were a lot of angry looking blobs covering the image and it did not look good to me.
“Whatever he is, I am sure that he is not just a regular world cop for the dragons. If he calling himself Lord then he might be a Prince or a king who is waiting to be crowned and that sort of thing or maybe the royalty. Because most of the dragons that I have heard about they are pompous and arrogant assholes and they love to terrorise other creatures with their power and also consider themselves to be nobility somehow.”
“Pompous and arrogant asshole sounds about right.” I muttered and then said,” I don’t know who he is. We did not have the time to get into all the details. But I did ask him if he was going to go back to his own realm and he said no. There was more work to be done here and that is when he warned me to stay out of his way.”
“If for some reason the Dragons have decided that they have to police the problems which they have inadvertently calls for us then that might not be a very bad thing. However if this thing has ever happened at all which might have been about 1000 years earlier then I have never encountered it. It might not be so bad to have a dragon help after all. Because we were also thinking that what caused so many supernatural and magical creatures to come to earth and stay here. They might have been here since human beings were living in caves and wearing foreign going for hunting and smacking film stones to make fire but they have been living together with us peacefully. Like there are so many small creatures dwarfs and cobalt and goblins who try not to cause any kind of problems but why wants did not previously swoop down in Seattle in the middle of the day and take away children in order to make a snack of them. About two decades earlier the dwarves and the elves who had taken refuge on earth for a certain amount of time have gone away and after that we have never seen this kind of influx.”
“Ah! Yes my blissful childhood.”
Pariah stared at me and said,” I always forget that you are a lot younger than you look.”
“It is this strange blood.”
“Having magical powers must be nice. But I am telling you, if you see this dragon again then better stay out of his way and don’t try to provoke him in any manner. If he is dragging them off for punishment and rehabilitation then there is no point in stopping him. In fact I have heard from quite a number of snitches who have given me a lot of information over the years that this is supposed to be a really bad mumbo jumbo. So in fact in another way you must have been granting the wyvern more see before the dragon took her by killing her. There is a reason why all the criminals from the other realms come here to earth and other wild world so that they would not have to encounter the punishment which is inflicted on them by Dragons.”
After what that particular why weren’t and what the other wyverns of that particular group had done mercy had not been exactly on my mind. However if this particular dragon was taking away all the criminals that I was particularly supposed to nab and then get paid for it then what was the point of being an assassin of magical beings?
“Then I think I search another particular career choice for me because if he is doing my work and I am supposed to stay out of his way then what am I supposed to do? Maybe I should focus on my studies and join the army as I thought I would once I graduated.”
“You? In the Army?” Pariah snorted.
It was the closest that I had ever got from a laugh from her. It was something I had never seen her doing. And then immediately she became serious again,” I know that you are young and you are going to have your own life but I am going to go out on a limb and say that you are the best that I have got right now. And if you want to study more then I can help you with that and make sure that your skills as an assassin are honed. I don’t want you to become a joker all of a sudden.”
I set the folder down which I was carrying in my hand which contained all the reports because my basic anatomical studies could not tell me anything more than I already could understand from it. In the region of the tumor there were blobs which looked like fairly dense clouds. And I kept on staring at the region where the tumor was supposed to be located and I could see a lot of masses there. Was it just a tumor? Was it more than one tumor? Was it a cloud of humour which was caused by some magical thing? Could magic mimic something of this salt and create disease of this level which could deteriorate to this extent in a few weeks?
And then suddenly a thought played in my mind, what if this wasn’t cancer at all? I mean as far as I have heard about cancer, it takes a lot of time to spread till this extent. What if this was not a natural cancer and had been caused by some kind of bad magic?
Pariah stared at me and said,” You seem pensive. What are you staring at? Does this mean that I really don’t have much time?”
Then she suddenly said,” Are you thinking about going into circus troupes where you will be thrown into air by the hunky male performers or you were offended by my offer to turn you into a better assassin?”
I was apprehensive if I was going to tell her about what I came to know but I actually did not know if this was completely true or not and the evidence was not that stable. Moreover I did not know any kind of magical healers or alchemists who could deal with this kind of ailment. I mean offering a smithereen of hope and then yanking it away seemed too cruel for a person who was already suffering so much. Maybe it was even foolish to think about it but she was the only one who could know if she had any kind of run in with any magical beings or rubbed someone in the wrong way.
“I told you about my encounter with the dragon. Have you had any such encounter with any kind of magical beings lately? The one who might have attacked you or anything? Especially in the weeks that have been leading up to this…”
I pointed in the direction of her hospital gown.
Immediately alarm flashed in her eyes and she looked at the direction I was pointing. Her brows rose up.
“Unless you have a magical ring or a belly button which you might have been wearing there is something in there which does not look natural to me.”
She looked at me and put away the covers and then slipped down the mattress on the floor in her hospital gown.
“No I don’t…”
The nurse opened the door and entered inside and looked at her and said sternly,” Colonel Pariah, you are not performing unauthorised exercises again, are you?”
“No Ma’am.”
The nurse clearly did not believe her and looked at me with suspicion. However I lifted my hands in innocence and said,” I have not told her to do anything at all.”
“I am going to set this here. If you need to adjust the settings of the bed then please use the remote,” she pointed in the direction of the cable which was attached to the frame of the bed. And Pariah nodded. The nurse set the food on the table and went out and I sniggered at her.
“What can I say? I am a trouble maker,” Pariah responded.
“I knew that already. However the magic thingy moved with you. It is definitely there. It moved when you moved.” I pointed to her abdomen and then I said,” I think that something very serious has been done to you, Colonel.”
“Shit.”
“Have you been making any enemies lately?”
Pariah stared at me and gave me a long hard look.
“You are the one who makes enemies. I am the one who sits in office and just collates the data.”
“Is there anyone who has come to visit you in the past month? The ones who might have any grudge against you?”
“A couple of snitches have been by but they come fairly on a regular basis because I pay them. A fae coffee shop owner and a orc restaurant owner. They have been coming by for years and they give me local news.”
I nodded and made a mental note to speak to both of them.
“Anyone come by your apartment?”
“No.”
“Mind if I check it?” I asked.
“No. Bob is looking after Lily. He has a key. He can let you in.”
“Do you like this Bob guy or hate him? I mean you gave your demonic cat to him?”
“Hahah. Very funny. Lily is a sweetheart in bed at night and not demonic at all.”
“You sure that you want me to do this, right? I mean I know that you are a fairly private person and you might consider this a gross invasion of your privacy but I think I can help you.”
“I know that I don’t say this a lot because I am a hardass but you are a good kid Sigrune and I am really grateful for whatever it is that you are doing. Thank you so much.”
