Chapter 6– The shades of midnight laminated the street that held its silence from the speedy vehicles and the wind that blew shook the signing board stated HOSPITAL ZONE. Hastyn felt her lungs were out of oxygen and tried hard to exhale some words, “No... Mr Shan. You have mistaken me. It’s nothing I can do. I tried my level...” The man outside the door rattled the door with a loud sound; the shivering ran down the spines of Hastyn. The man outside never seized his actions of the banging door and clasping the doorknob. The lights in the room of Hastyn started flickering mysteriously and the heat in the light bulbs, frequently on and off, turned the light to explode into pieces and the broken piece of light scratched the forehead of Hastyn. The man banged the door again with an evil laugh, “You can never escape from me, Doctor Hastyn.” “Knock, knock... Dr Hastyn, open the door. Come with me. Accompany me with this deadly chillness,” the man shrieked. A person outside knocked, “Doctor Hastyn? Open the door. Are you there, Doctor Hastyn?” Hastyn was shocked to hear Reda’s voice and extended her trembling hand towards the knob of the door. “The door is open,” a contemptuous tone voiced from inside the room. Hastyn was panicked and patted heavily. Hastyn turned around to look for the person. She couldn’t find any. The light flashed brightly and a hand from behind clutched the shoulder of Hastyn, it startled her and opened her hazel widely and found Reda standing near her and calling her name repeatedly. “Doctor Hastyn?” Reda, assistant nurse of Hastyn approached her, who buried her head in her knees and folded her hands securely around her knees, “What happened, Doctor...?” Reda asked, “Doctor, wake up? What happened? Are you dreaming? Why don’t you turn your lights on? I thought you left. But after seeing your name on the reception board, I searched for you everywhere... I” Hastyn grabbed her neck and hugged Reda tightly, “Reda, that man deserves a better life. I could have helped him.” Reda consoled her, “Doctor, don’t blame yourself. You can’t do anything; his life was out of control of our hands. No such medicine has ever been found for the brain-dead person. Don’t blame yourself.” Hastyn had no idea what Reda was talking about. She listened to her words vainly but nothing was sensed in her brain. Hastyn grabbed the hands of Reda and asked her, “Reda, did the family of Mr Shan leave?” Reda rolled her eyes and asked, “Doctor, why does it bother you? It’s been hours since they left. You looked panicked...! Did you dream of him?” Hastyn felt the numbness in her legs when she tried to stand up and Reda helped her to stand on her feet. Hastyn told her, “Thank you, Reda. I don’t know when I sleep ( I placed her hand on her neck and turned right to left) my neck is aching, bring me something. And what is the time?” Reda opened the drawer of Hastyn’s table to take the ointment that was used for treating muscle stress, “Doctor, it is in your drawer. Hospital provided all the first aid ointments and tablets for doctors. Let me help you”, saying those words Reda removed the shirt around the neck of Hastyn and applied the ointment, “Doctor, don’t overthink about Shan and his family. They are marked as one of the rich families in the city. They will be fine. Don’t blame yourself for his death. He is a poor destined man.” Hastyn never lend her ears to Reda and her comforting words. Rather she asked, “When did Mr Shan’s family go?” Reda informed her with an exhale, “No, they are still in.” Hastyn asked with red puffy eyes, “Why... what holds them?” Reda told, “You.” Hastyn widened her hazel eyes and asked in a puzzle, “Me...? what do you mean?” Reda handed over her the papers of the medical report, “Doctor, you need to sign these papers to end the formalities.” Hastyn got the papers and read the report thoroughly and the hazel eyes Hastyn stopped on the point, ‘Cause of Death: Stroke’ Reda patted on the shoulders to rouse the zoned-out Hastyn, “Doctor, are you alright?” Hastyn nodded her head, “Yes. I am alright. Reda, you hand over the papers to his family members and...” Reda stepped out the door with the signed papers and was about to close the door behind them. She heard the voice of Hastyn calling her, “Reda...” Reda rushed inside and asked hurriedly, “Do you need anything, Doctor?” Hastyn answered by sitting on her chair. “I am exhausted. I need a break.” Reda nodded her head and replied, “I will postpone all your appointments. And don’t blame yourself. As a doctor, you know well that we can only be able to help the patient survive. We can’t guarantee the surety of life. Just Relax.” The telephone on the table rang, and Reda said, “I will pick it.” Hastyn asked, “Who is it?” Reda said, “Can you please hold on for a minute…? (Cover the receiver with her hand and turn to Hastyn) Doctor, it’s from reception, I will take the message while you can refresh yourself as I have turned on the heater.” Hastyn nodded her head when went into the restroom to refresh herself, “So nice of you.” Hastyn looked at the mirror mounted on the restroom wall and found no reflection of her in the mirror. Panicked, Hastyn wiped the mirror with her bare hands and sighed with her closed eyes, “F***k, such a horrid dream. This man is haunting me. Errr.” Hastyn blinded, walked over to Reda who was waiting outside the restroom with a towel and, shocked to think that Reda was Mr Shan, asked her, “Reda... What are you doing here? You scared me. Does it hurt? I am sorry, I didn’t...” Reda said by rubbing her forehead, “Doctor, my mistake. You are wanted by the reception. Someone is waiting to meet you.” Hastyn grabbed the towel from Reda’s hand and asked her, “Waiting for me!”, while patting the soft towel over her neck and drying her wet hands. Reda laughed a little, “You are a reputed doctor in the city. Of course, you will get visitors.” Hastyn grabbed her pieces of stuff, adjusted her clothes and headed her way to the reception to meet her visitors while Reda arranged the tedious room of Hastyn which was messed by the wind through her window.
