The sound of metal clashing against metal is ringing loudly somewhere in the darkness up ahead. The sound of a woman crying caught my attention. I looked around trying to find the source only to find more darkness. It's surrounding me. It's clouding everything making it impossible for me to see a single thing. As the sobbing grew louder, the clanking faded. The two sounds hurt my ears.
"Where am I?" I whispered to myself. Yet, the sound of it bounced around the vast darkness of this place as if I had shouted it at the top of my lungs.
I stood up looking around again. It's hardly the first time I had to move around in the dark. I made sure I was okay to take a step by lightly tapping the area in front of me with my foot before moving forward. The sound of the woman's sobbing is getting louder with each step I take.
A light appeared making me stop. It's bright. Not like a light in a household but bright like the big fluorescent ones in a school or a hospital maybe. I looked around one last time before quietly proceeding.
The light soon surrounded me. The sobbing is not too far now. The darkness of the floor faded into shiny white linoleum, hospital walls surrounded me, the bright lights beat down on me. I looked around to see the darkness is completely gone now. The silence is gone replaced with the sounds of people talking and moving around.
I can still hear the crying, only now it's not a light sobbing it sounds like she's in pain. Someone is with her now. They're encouraging her. A man. I walked into the room where the sound of her pleas is coming from, to see a man with his back to me. He's holding the woman's hand. Her legs are propped up on a birthing table with a folded white sheet covering her legs. She's gripping his hand tightly. I can't really see there faces from where I'm standing.
"Okay, sweetheart. Start pushing for me," the doctor instructed.
"These are the memories of the nurse that was here that night," I jumped turning around towards the sound of the voice.
"Hello?"
"Down here, princess," I looked down to find a lizard-like animal on the floor.
"Weirdest dream I've ever had," I whispered to myself. The thing looked over at me and smiled. Its shark-like teeth gleaming against the fluorescent lights above.
"He was also aware of his dreams. Never once questioned the reality of anything," it said.
"Why am I dreaming this?" I asked looking back into the room where the woman continued to cry out.
"Your time is near. You will lead us into the new era. The time of Arthur has come to an end. Soon you'll have to choose which sword your heart will wield,"
"Cryptic. I need to stop falling asleep while I'm reading,"
The thing chuckled.
The sound of hysterical crying caught my attention. I looked back into the room to see the nurse holding a baby wrapped in a blanket. She handed the baby to the man who held her close to him as he went over to the woman. The two of them bundled in together.
"I am so sorry, Lily," the woman on the bed cried. My heart skipped.
"She'll come home in due time," the nurse taking the baby from them reminded her.
The woman began to cry out louder now. More pain than before. The kind of pain that comes from deep inside of the soul. Chills pimpled along my body. God many times have I been there? The man held her down as the nurse walked out of the room with the baby in her arms. I glanced back at them and jumped back when his brilliant blue eyes met my own. He wasn't looking at me but at the nurse, as she walked away with the baby.
He wears his emotions in his gaze. His expression is calm and poise like that of a soldier but in his eyes. Those eyes show just how much pain he is in. It's killing him to see them take the baby away. I turned around to look at the nurse only to come face to face with a massive snake. I stepped back as it curled up preparing to attack.
"I want to wake up now," I cried out. The snake opened it's massive mouth revealing two extremely long fangs.
"Stay there," a man's voice shouted from inside the room.
As the snake moved to strike me the man from inside the room rushed out with a sword in both his hands. He swung it downward hitting the snake on the tip of its nose. The snake pulled back going to strike him. This time he swung it upward knocking it back.
"Get my Lily out of here Elise," he demanded, facing the snake-head on.
I bolted up stumbling out of my bed. I stretched my arms out in front of my catching myself before my face hit the floor. I was trying to catch my breath when I heard a little snicker from behind me. I looked back to see Cat sitting up with a smile on her face. I smiled back trying to untangle myself from the mess of blankets wrapped around my legs. Once I was free, I looked over at the alarm clock on the vanity to see it was only three a.m.
"Did I wake you?" I asked sitting at the end of the bed.
"No, I can't sleep," she whispered. I tried to catch my breath as I got back on the bed. "You had a bad dream?"
"Yeah, there was a giant snake it in,"
She giggled letting her body fall back into her pillows. "I hate snakes," she mumbled softly.
"So do I," I admitted. "Try to get some sleep. You have school tomorrow,"
"Okay," she nodded, before turning around to face the wall.
I had arranged the room to fit both our beds in a way that didn't take up too much space. I turned the desk lamp off and got back into bed. I shut my eyes trying to forget that dream. What the hell was that? Who were those people and why was there a talking lizard in my dream? I sighed turning on my back. My eyes adjusted to the darkness here and all I can really do is stare up at the ceiling. Those blue eyes. The man was handsome, tall, and well built. He had been young.
Cat groaned a little in her sleep before she turned in my direction letting her arm flop off the side of the bed. I got up tucking her in before I walked out into the hall. The light by the bathroom is on but the rest are off. I walked over to it opening the door to find there was no one in here.
This place doesn't give me the creeps in the slightest but a part of me wished it did. A part of me wished that this place would be the scariest thing to happen to me, yet I can't help but feel a bit at home which is something that I'm not at all familiar with.
I started the cold water needing to feel something other than the fever that dream had left behind. I cupped my hands and splashed some on my face. The cold startled my skin instantly clearing my mind. I sighed feeling a little better. I turn the faucet off before looking up at the mirror. The blue eyes are reflecting back at me. I had never had a vivid dream like that. I hope it never happens again.
