Abigail was about to get into her car when she received Aidan’s call, and she quickly answered, “Aidan, why did you send your assistant? You could have sent the driver or I could simply drive alone.”
“I am sorry, dear. Suddenly a client set up an emergency meeting, and I have to leave for it. So I sent Charles to go with you. Enjoy your day, baby. I gave him a credit card. You can buy anything. Please don’t be angry, my love. I promise I will be with you the entire weekend. If you don’t go shopping, I will think that you are mad at me, and you have not forgiven me. And don’t think about going alone. I can’t stay at ease.” His tone was so gentle and full of love that Abigail couldn’t deny him, despite the despair. She said, “Alright, I will go with him, but don’t forget what you promised.”
“I won’t, my love. Now I got to go. The client is waiting for me.” With that, he hung up the call without giving her time to say goodbye. He always did like that. Abigail’s heart ached, and she looked down at the screen with pain in her eyes.
Charles got into the car. He was about to start the engine when Abigail came in front of the car. Charles was stunned. Did she change her mind so soon? He looked at her curiously. She seemed sad, and Charles’s pupils shrank. He quickly got out of the car and asked, “Miss Mills, are you alright?”
“I… I will go with you.” She dropped her head immediately.
Charles frowned and peered at her incredulously. She was an energetic, arrogant, and proud young lady, but right now, she looked low in confidence and a battered woman. He said nothing but hummed shortly. He opened the back door for her, and she got in the car without making any noise. Charles also went inside the car and started the engine.
The journey was quiet. No one made a sound. Charles only looked at her in the rearview mirror from time to time. She was looking out through the windshield. She seemed like lost her soul. Charles felt heartache for her. This woman really loved Aidan, but Aidan had no time for her. For a few seconds, he even thought of telling his boss to spend some time with her, but soon, he shrugged off that idea. Who was he to say anything to Aidan? He was only his assistant, not his advisor. Aidan and Abigail were engaged, and they would be married very soon. They were capable of handling things better than him. He shouldn’t interfere with someone else’s personal business. After thinking like this, he brushed off his worries for Abigail and concentrated on the driving.
Nearly an hour later, they reached a shopping mall. Abigail only strolled from one shop to another dejectedly. She had no interest in buying anything. Charle followed her quietly. They were walking side by side but didn’t talk to each other. They behaved like strangers.
After walking for a while aimlessly, Abigail eventually stopped in front of a branded apparel store. A strange light shone in her eyes, and her lips curled up mischievously. Without delay, she entered the shop. As usual, Charles followed her like a shadow. Abigail started picking one after another dress randomly. She didn’t stop until the shopping cart was completely full.
Charles’s jaw fell apart. He couldn’t close his mouth for a long time. At last, unable to control his curiosity, he asked, “Are you going to buy all that?”
“Yes, of course.” She answered casually while smiling profusely. After a while, she turned her head and looked at him suspiciously. Maybe she sensed something. She asked, “What? Didn’t Aidan give you a credit card?”
Charles chuckled awfully and said, “Yes. He gave a credit card though.”
His throat went dry to imagine the bills, and he felt sorry for Aidan. ‘Very good. This is the punishment for not accompanying your fiancee.’ He mumbled in his mind and looked at Abigail in bewilderment. This woman had a way of getting even. Just as he was dazing, he heard her asking, “What are you staring at? Give me the card.” She stretched out her hand towards him.
Charles came to his senses, and took out the credit card from his wallet, and gave it to her. She walked to the billing counted gracefully, saying, “Bring the shopping cart.”
Charles followed her order like an obedient servant.
The salespersons were so happy to find such a customer that they couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear, and Charles felt like his cheeks were hurting to see them smiling so much. Then what happened next was terrible for him. Abigail stuffed him with innumerable carry bags, and those carry bags almost buried Charles.
“Take the bags to the car. Be careful. Don’t drop them, okay?” She glanced at him haughtily and gave the order. Then she left the store right after she finished speaking without looking back at him.
Charles frowned and stared at her retreating back. Resentment clouded in his eyes. Gritting his teeth, he tried to follow her, but some of the bags slipped out of his hands. One of the salesmen helped him carry the bags to the car. They stuffed the bags inside the trunk, and Charles thanked him from the bottom of his heart. He glanced coldly at Abigail who was sitting inside the car before he got in the car. He drove to the mansion directly.
The road to the Mills mansion passed by the beach in the city M. While crossing the beach, Abigail suddenly shouted, “Stop the car.”
Charles panicked a little, thinking that she might have left something at the mall, and asked frantically, “What happened? Did you leave something behind?”
“Stop the car right now.” She snapped angrily, and Charles could only park the car on the roadside.
Abigail got out of the car and rushed towards the beach.
“Miss Mills, where are you going?” He chased her after while asking this.
But Abigail didn’t listen to him. She ran to the beach, and when she reached the sandy area, she threw her heels and started walking towards the sea.
It was already 9 in the evening, and the beach was empty and dark. Charles was a little worried about her, and he called her, “It’s dark out there, and it’s not safe. It’s getting late too. Let me drive you home.”
“I want to spend some time here. If you want to go, just go back. Don’t worry about me.”
This was the answer he got from her. Charles snorted and clenched his fists. How could he leave her alone? Did she think that he was a careless person? He felt more and more annoyed by this thought. Grabbing her heels, he followed her, muttering something under his breath.
Unaware of his sour mood, Abigail was enjoying the stiff sea breeze. She felt refreshed and rejuvenated. Her hair tousled due to the wind, and she kept pushing it back behind her ears. The roar of the sea sounded louder and louder when she approached the sea. She stopped just a few feet away from the water and looked at the dark water.
The sea breeze kept brushing the strands of her hair on her face, but she didn’t mind at all. The sea breeze was sending a cooling sensation throughout her body. Along with the breeze, tiny salty sand particles were also flying all over the place, and when she moved her hair out of her face, she got some sand in her mouth. It was salty, but her smile only broadened as though it didn’t bother her. She hugged herself and rubbed her arms with her hands.
Charles came to her and stood quietly on her right side, looking at the dark water. “I missed this for two years. There was no sea beach where I lived in the country C.” He heard her saying gently and turned his head to look at her. She went on to say, “When I was young, Mom used to bring me here, but after her death, it was very rare for me to come here.”
Charles could feel the sadness in her tone, and suddenly, an urge to hold her in his arms, and comfort her emerged in his mind. Maybe be because he also missed his mother, just like her. He only kept looking at her without a word. She said again, “Dad is always busy with his work and has never had time for me. And now…”
She chuckled bitterly and didn’t finish her sentence. She looked up at the sky. Countless stars and a crescent moon could be seen. After looking up at the sky for a while, she said, “You should give more time with your girlfriend. Why are you keep coming after me?” Her eyes drifted down at him.
Charles let out a chuckle and said, “I am not coming after you. I am just following my boss’ orders.”
She sighed with dismay and looked away from him. Charles also pulled back his eyes and focused on the waves, hitting on the shore. Once more they stopped talking, and only the roar of the sea could be heard. After a span of silence, she again started saying, “You said that you are immune to my beauty. But don’t you fear that if you continue to accompany me like this, you may fall in love with me?”
He smiled and said, “I can ask you the same question. What if one day you really fall in love with me and refuse to marry Mr. Thompson?”
