Chapter 1

AUDREY’S POV   “You may now kiss the bride,” the priest said.   Liam held my veil and slowly moved it upwards to reveal my face.   He is smiling as he looks into my eyes. I couldn’t help but feel happy. Liam Alexander Mason, the sexiest and hottest man alive, is now my husband. How lucky must I be? I would get to see his face the first thing in the morning. I could eat breakfast and dinner with him. And above all, I’ll be living with him under the same roof.   He slowly lowered his face onto mine and sealed our vows with a kiss.   It was a short kiss, but I felt electrified. The moment our lips touched, it felt like a thousand voltages of electricity had passed us.   The crowd roared and shouted more, but we just smiled at them.   Cameras started flashing from different directions. All we did was hold each other’s hands and smile sweetly at the camera.   Liam held my hand and gently pulled me with him as we make our way outside the church.   He opened the door of his limousine and motioned for me to get in. I quickly got inside the car and sat. He followed and sat beside me. The driver then drove us to Li Xan Hotel where the reception of our wedding will be held. It was owned by Liam, himself.   While inside the car, the silence made the air dreadful. I couldn’t speak as I was not yet accustomed to his presence.   Liam, on the other hand, was talking over the phone to a client. He didn’t even bother to look at me, much more, to smile at me. I felt a pang of pain as he started to treat me indifferently.   The car stopped in front of the towering hotel. Liam immediately opened the door for me and held out his hand. I took his hand shyly and walked beside him. From being stone cold and emotionless, he became all smiles as we made our way into the reception.   We sat at the presidential table together with our parents. Our parents have made this arrangement possible.   My parents had always wanted someone to rule our business empire. Being the only child and a woman made me ill-fitting for the job. My Dad wanted someone successful who could handle and expand our business.   Since they were friends with Liam’s parents, they decided to marry us off. On my part, I wouldn’t have married him if not for love.   You see, I was in love with him since I was young. I grew up looking up to Liam. He’s the popular womanizer guy whom you would never want to cross paths with. But I couldn’t understand why I had fallen for him.   He was like my older brother. He used to be so protective of me. We were actually on good terms, not until this wedding happened.   I sighed as I remembered what happened that day. We were at a restaurant for a dinner with our family. When our parents made the announcement, I was so happy. It was a dream comes true for me. However, when I looked at Liam’s face, he showed no interest at all.   We used to be close to each other, but after that night, everything changed. Gone was the old Liam that I used to know. He talked to me to cancel the wedding but I disagreed. Since then, he changed.   I couldn’t blame him, though. He asked me to cancel the wedding because he was in a secret relationship with someone. He hasn’t introduced her to his family because it would only complicate things. I knew about it but I couldn’t let him be with that girl. I’ve been hearing a lot about her, but Liam refused to believe me. To him, I was the liar.   I sighed and looked around. Everyone seemed so happy. I was smiling as well, but it didn’t even reach my eyes. Is it too late to regret marrying him?   There’s no denying how much I love him but I couldn’t stand the way he’s treating me. It’s as if I don’t exist in his world. Like I was nothing but a trophy he could be proud of.   “Stop sighing, it gives people the connotation that you’re not happy to be here. Isn’t this what you wanted?” He said sharply.   I could almost feel a lump forming in my throat. What would I say? He’s right, after all.   “That’s not it. Of course, I am happy, Liam,” I answered sweetly.   His expression immediately changed to disgust.   “After this, you’re going home,” he said coldly.   “Aren’t we going for a honeymoon?” I asked absent-mindedly.   He looked at me with disdain and shook his head.   “You are so desperate. Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?” He whispered disgustedly.   I just smiled at him but deep inside, I’m in pain. It looks like he will never accept me as his wife.   The program lasted for a few hours. The visitors kept on cheering on us as we danced as a couple. Our parents gave their messages and advice about married life but I wasn’t paying attention.   My mind was floating somewhere. I used to imagine how happy my life would be with Liam, but I think I was wrong. He doesn’t want anything to do with me.   How I wish he felt the same for me.   “Smile, Audrey. Don’t piss me off. You’ve been frowning all along,” he whispered in my ears.   I stiffened when his warm breath fanned on my ears and made me feel goosebumps. I couldn’t deny Liam’s effect on my body. Whenever he’s near me, I would immediately feel my racing heartbeat. My mouth went dry when he stared at me and pierced me with his cold eyes.   “Of course, Liam, I’m sorry,” I apologized.   “Don’t act like you don’t like what’s happening when everything is on your side. The odds are in your favor, Audrey,” he said coldly.   I swallowed the lump on my throat. I’m trying so hard to stop myself from tearing up. Liam is so mad at me. Can’t he see? I was trying to save him from that conniving b***h!   As soon as the program ended, Liam sent me home. Just like that!   He sent me like I was just a child. As I entered the huge mansion, I couldn’t help but feel alone. The vast space only added to my loneliness. I made my way into the Master’s Bedroom. I glanced around, no matter how many times I’ve been to this place, I still marvel at its glorious beauty. I sighed, this place is beautiful but it feels cold and lonely.   “Señorita, this way to your room,” a maid approached me.   I gave her a small smile.   “Thank you,” I answered back and continued walking upstairs.   Along the hallway, I saw a framed picture of Liam and his family. They looked like a perfect family. Liam was smiling and showing his pearly white teeth. No wonder, I have fallen deep for him. Besides their family picture is a large portrait of Liam. He looked so serious in his picture, yet it only added to his gorgeousness.   I went inside our room and started to undress. I let the soft bodice of the gown fall. I removed the pins on my hair and let it loose.   I walked confidently naked inside the bathroom and looked at my reflection in the mirror. When I look into my eyes, that’s when I realized how much I’ve changed.   In the process of proving myself and trying to win Liam’s attention, I lost myself. There was no more trace of happiness in my eyes. All I can see is sadness and pain. My chest hurts every time I remember how disgusted Liam feels towards me. Do I deserve this kind of pain?   I stood under the shower and let the water from the shower fall on my body. My tears glided down my eyes along with the water from the shower. This day is supposed to be our best day.     It turned out, today is the day when all of my sufferings will begin.
