I stood right next to the hole. “Wait,” I said to Sawbuck. “Listen.”
I heard Tenni talking to her sister in the kitchen, and the squeak of Mary turning over in bed, and the little girls giggle in the parlor. And the girls told us earlier that they could hear what was being said upstairs. “Go into my study and say something, then into my bedroom and speak again.”
I could hear it all. I heard the front doorbell ring, the door open and shut. I heard Sawbuck go outside. I heard his footsteps return, all the way down the hall.
Sawbuck walked in. “This is bad, Mrs. Spadros. My men talked to the neighbors: there have been men coming in and out for two years at least.”
