Chapter 1
What started out as a great day was already turning sour. I was supposed to go job hunting right about now to pay off my landlord. I remember begging and flirting as much as I could before he finally allowed me to move in for two weeks as long as I got the rent paid by the third week. Currently, I have $42 which I need for food. Unfortunately my plans have been hindered as I glower at the court document before me. When my emancipation finally went through, I figured I'd be free. I am halfway across the country for God's sake, but no. It's all part of their stupid rules that they have to inform the ex legal guardian of my departure and provide a location to show I'm safe. I haven't been fighting the courts for emancipation the last two years only to receive the verification when I'm two months away from being eighteen and to have my location exposed. I can't even afford to move! Then again, if I don't find a job I won't be able to afford to stay. Ripping the paper in half, I grab my portfolio off the table and rush out of my dingy apartment. Luckily the last person who lived in it died, so the furniture was free. Score. Finding a job can't be too hard. I may be seventeen, but I did graduate highschool and I do have a bachelor's degree in criminal law. People like to hire young adults right? We'll see. Stepping outside into the soft wind, I pull the skirt of my dress down a bit in hopes the wind won't blow it up. First things first, I don't have a car. I pull a stack of business cards out of my matching pastel pink purse and begin punching the numbers into Google to find the addresses. Picking the first five closest places, I set off on foot. Two and a half miles to the first stop. It takes fifty minutes for me arrive outside the door of a large brick building. "Marketing media," I state blandly. It can't be that difficult. ................... It has most definitely been a difficult day and it isn't even two o'clock yet. I've walked four and three quarters of a mile already all the first four either turned me down or told me to wait for a call. Everybody knows what wait for a call means. 'wow you suck but I don't want to say it to your face so I'll get you out of here while providing you with false hope.' I'm going to get evicted! I need four hundred dollars in the next week and a half! On my way to the final stop, I pass an ice cream shop and my heart clenches. If I had the money I'd go in. Unfortunately I walk the final half mile before walking through the doors of a ginormous glass skyscraper. Surely there's work in this place. A janitor? Wow I'm desperate. How much would it suck if I didn't get to use my law degree at an actual law firm, but instead cleaned floors? Walking up to the reception desk, I stand on my tip toes so that my shoulders can be above the desk. Curse my 5'2 shortness. "Excuse me," I say to the brunette bobbed woman. Her purple dyed streak on the left side has me assuming she's not a total b***h. She smiles a bit, clearly trying not to snicker. "Can I help you?" I nod before clearing my throat. "I was just wondering if there were any job openings." The lady purses her lips and takes on a thoughtful look. "You don't have an appointment and even though there aren't any help wanted signs, the boss brings people in if he sees potential. Maybe... Let me call up first," she says before picking up her phone and hitting a single button. "Boss, yeah we have a girl here looking for a job. No. Great, okay. Will do." She slams the phone down and looks down at me again with sparkling eyes. "He'll see you right now. I can't leave my station, but if you take the elevator to floor 30 and turn right walking all the way to the end, you should reach his office." I thank her and practically skip to the elevator. This is my last chance for a well paying job. If I mess this up, I'll have to work in fast food or as a stripper. My nerves make me bounce, literally on my toes. Don't mess this up Ellie. The elevator stops on the 28th floor and a very well built man walks in. His all black suit does nothing to hide the buldging muscles and his short beard only adds to his dangerous vibe. I didn't realize I was still bouncing up and down until he looks over at me smirking. I stop abruptly and hang my head as a blush creeps up. Way to be professional. "Are you here for the job interview?" the mans surprisingly soothing but still gruff voice asks. I nod and smile shyly. "Wonderful," he says. The door opens and he places his hand on the middle of my back, ushering me out to the 30th floor. "We can begin in my office down this way." Is this? Did he... Did I just bounce like a child in front of the man I'm supposed to interview with?!
